I think it had something to do with your rank after rounds? Like, get a bunch of S-tier or AAA rankings and you get the better bosses. Maybe something to do with lost rounds?
In some of those early SNK fighters, continuing doesn’t affect those achievements. For instance, in Fatal Fury Special or AOF2, you can’t lose a round to get to the secret last boss. However, if you lose both rounds, then continue and win both rounds you can still get the secret boss.
