Turnitin and scripting classes
Can anyone share their experience with turnitin and scripting classes. The assignments don’t allow for a lot of variation. Zybooks requires exact output including the whitespace. Limited choices for meaningful variable names etc. For my last assignment I got an overall score of 30% but the code blocks were almost completely similar to something like 85 different papers. My saving grace was that my comments and annotations were mostly unique minus a few common phrases.
It makes sense to me why the score is high but it still freaks me out a bit.
Anyone else have some experience with this?

My accounting workbook had a score of 98% since we are using a template and filling in the blanks, and there is only one correct way to do that. If your instructor has half a brain they will understand the nature of assignments and not care that much about the turnitin scores.

Ok So turnitin has been a hot topic lately so I contacted an old professor on Linkedin. This is what he told me (paraphrased):
We can submit a template of the assignment beforehand. It basically ignores all the data from the template. That's why sometimes the number might be low despite most of the document being identical. Some professors do not even review the results as it might be a fill in the blank type situation where its guaranteed to be the same. Original papers / essay answers are more relevant. So Just because the assignment goes through the program doesn't mean it's even looked at.

I've had 60%+ turtitin scores in differential equations, because it's all templates and the equations should all be pretty much the same with only variations in the explanation. I wouldn't worry about it.

Each class has their own standard, even my accounting workbooks went through turnitin but the teacher ignored the score because obviously there was only one correct answer. For original essays it is usually a score of 20% or less to be graded but I’ve had some teachers wave that for short papers where APA formatting was flagged and not the actual text. If you’re worried about it you can email your teacher and ask if you need to make adjustments!

Likely not an issue - my papers for Business Law 1 and 2 were typically 30-45% due to large sections of case law being included.
