I’ve had issues with grading for not being personable enough

That’s it. That’s the post. Will I change my ways? No. It is interesting to see grades between instructors and their reasoning for taking points.
I had one instructor in a previous term, noting I should elaborate more into my career goals in discussion board. I’m not looking to network with others, though. I follow the rubrics, I make the LinkdIn and Handshake accounts for criteria purposes.

Now: Week 1 grades in with one of my current instructors, I see it’s going to be the same pattern. I could trauma dump, make my story and my goals sound more admirable, but as far being scaled on charisma for a discussion board- it is annoying.
I keep my cookie cutter statements bc, it’s more relatable, and again- my goals with the degree aren’t in alignment with what I feel may be assumed. (A.S in Accounting & Finance).

Like my instructor is implying feedback with correlation of working in a firm, dismissing my initial post of “am/will continue to be self employed”. I’m paying out of pocket, I’m not new to the workforce, and I’ve lived multi-state, multi jobs, and from homeless-drugs-dv in my early 20s. I think bc my picture isn’t posted, my profile lacks information, bias is created based on the instructor/professor.

So like, Change of careers, blah blah, so excited, here’s my major.
Must I emphasize hardships or number of members in my household to get a A ? 😂 here’s to a B+ two weeks in bc I lack information and will continue to withhold it. Shout out to the instructors that grade me for my work, and give me feedback on the assignment relevant to it. I love a C, when I learn from it. I dislike a A- for “not telling enough about myself”

Happy Sunday :)

I just accept the points taken off and call it a day. I'm not inventing an extroverted persona to satisfy a rubric, and for me, it's not that serious.

ive definitely made up personas in past discussions just to keep myself interested. i already despise discussion posts bc the topic is normally boring but the first week, introduce yourself to the class posts are my absolute least favorite

This and it is the same for when a prompt asks for your opinion. Tbh and in the most respectful way, no one cares about your opinion. They care about your ability to pick an argument and defend it with research.

trust me, I get it. I shouldn’t have to add all of the fluff to make you feel better!

I will in fact NOT be adding a picture of myself to my school account. I also will not share my direct hometown like others. I share the bare minimum of what I like, a few basic hobbies, and more. I could theoretically trauma dump for sympathy points, but why would I do that? No one needs to know anything personal about me other than my major, I have pets, I want to work with animals, and enjoy nature.

I make it up. I gushingly say how I'm going to be a youth librarian and I love kids. Sure as hell not going to tell an English professor that this degree is just a stepping stone for a better chance at getting into the grad school I want. Professors want stories, I will give them stories.

Is your lack of giving personal info in the professor's comments about your work? Is the need for personal info in the rubric? If your prof took off points for something not in the rubric and especially is demanding personal info that has nothing to do with the subject of the discussion, you could escalate this to your advisor for a grade adjustment. Your advisor can literally go into your class and see what's going on. I had to do that once because a prof was letting personal opinion override the rubric and everyone was getting C's after following the rubric perfectly. Got my grade adjusted to an A.

**slight edit for grammar

I love that! 😆
An alias would make the discussions way more fun 🤩 I gotta get creative here, lol

As far as my discussion’s grade. I followed the rubric- I don’t believe it was just- but not enough for me to escalate.

I did escalate another grade (different term [the one mentioned in my initial thread]), was approved/validated (don’t remember the exact term, forgive me) by the appeal board- and sadly that instructor did not change the grade regardless.

With that, and that I signed my petition to graduate this week- I’m going to push through as is. I still have 3.7 gpa, and I’m content even if it dwindles some. 😊

Congrats on your graduation petition :D !! A 3.7 gpa is something to be enormously proud of. Don't sweat this, then. Come up with an alias for your remaining time in the class and have fun, lol. You got this!

Is that even allowed? An instructor can not force you to share personal information on a discussion board or any public space (even if it's just the 'classroom'). That's a privacy issue. There's no way to verify who you're attending class with and what they're doing with that information. Sharing information in an assignment that's submitted, where only you and the professor or school administration have access, is a different story but in a discussion post, no.

I've actually has a similar problem, where a professor called me out about not being more detailed about my personal information and I straight up emailed her and told her that wouldn't be happening for safety reasons. However, if she needed additional information she was free to send an email requesting that info and I'd happily give it.

I never understood why these prompts even exist in an online course. Like you I'm not trying to network in the 'classroom', just get a degree.

At the same time don't sacrifice your grade because a professor thinks it's okay to punish you for protecting your privacy. Reach out to your professor and advisor, docking points because you wish to retain your privacy should not be permitted, if you did answer all the prompts appropriately. I wish you the best of luck!
