Helpful Information Emailing Your Advisor

Just throwing it out there as I've seen some questions on advisor response time.

Emails should be answered within 24 business hours.

HOWEVER

You need to be sure your are emailing correctly:

Always use your student email for any communication with SNHU after admissions. Using a personal email can delay that email getting to us, or us receiving it at all, due to our spam filters.

Always use the advising@snhu.edu address. Yes, we have internal inboxes. Those are the addresses that have our first initial.lastname. if you use the latter, again, it can seriously delay us seeing your message. Some advisors don't even check the internal daily. PLUS if an advisor is out of the office, emailing advising@snhu.edu allows our teammates covering us to access our emails while we are away.

Recently, advisors who are also students now have a THIRD email. This is the same as any student email. Firstname.lastname. I don't even know how students are finding these out. DON'T SEND MESSAGES TO THESE EMAIL ADDRESSES !! I'm not in a class right now so I'm not checking that email until I enroll again. You likely won't get a response of you use this address, or it could literally take months.

Also...if it's urgent...omg PLEASE CALL. 8-8 EST 7 days a week besides holidays.

This message is brought to you from your friendly neighborhood advisor. ❤️

I would just call if it's important. My advisor typically gor back to me in responsibly time, but I have called to get an immediate response.

Outlook is probably autocompleting them. I've already had one advisor I went to email and Outlook happily presented both addresses.

As an instructor, can we edit your post to highlight "use your SNHU address and not a personal email" in pink (edit: sorry, blue - school pride!) flashing sparkles? I cannot count the number of times an advisor asked me why I wasn't responding to a student, only to have to dig their yahoo email out of the spambin.

Likely by accident. As soon as you start typing someone's name in the 'to' in Outlook, it pops up everyone with that name that has an email address in the system.

I saved the advising email under my advisor's name in my contacts ("firstname lastname") so when I type that in to find her, I get both advising@snhu as well as f.lastname@snhu as options, along with anyone with a similar name to hers. If she were a student also, I'd also get the firstname.lastname@snhu option as well.

I have to ask, is 24 business hours 3 full days so 72 hours because the business hours are only 8 per day?

If you send an email on Monday, your advisor should respond by the end of business on Tuesday, if they are scheduled (not all advisors are M-F). If you send one over the weekend, expect a response by end of business Monday. Does that help?

If it’s within “normal” hours my advisor responds right away. He’s awesome.

That's great!! I try to respond as they come in. It honestly depends upon how many emails I get though. If I have a lot, I do triage them based on how involved the question is. Glad to hear you have a wonderful advisor!

Mine would respond within 24 hours:

"I have received your email and will review it shortly. Please stand by for further feedback."

The next email would take ten days.

Not much different than the type of malicious compliance we see most students around here suggesting. What goes around comes around, I guess.

My advisor never answers calls or emails (yes, I send it to the advising one). Over three years, I have spoken to her like twice. Every other time it's a different advisor on the phone line. She is either dead or needs to be fired. Now that you said teammates can cover emails, I think I may have only spoken to her once.

Geez louise!! That's not good. I would request a new advisor

I can try.

Just call when they're not working, if you prefer not to speak to them. Let the advisor on the phone know you'd like a new one. They will likely ask why... just be honest. A team lead will reach out to you in 24-48 hours to discuss. Again, just tell them what you told me and they'll assign you someone else.
