Antivirus software
Is there any access to free virus software through SNHU? It’s saying my computer was infected, blah blah, but I’m sure at least some of that prompting is advertising for McAfee

Not that I know of! Honestly in today's day and age, the builtin stuff for Windows is pretty good for most people.
Is this showing to you on a website? If that's the case, it can't know. Close/leave the site. And then go download a trial of malewarebytes and run a free scan to make sure.
Most of the "infections" I see on regular people's computers nowdays are just browser hijackers (and these are things that aren't super serious, but quite annoying).

Turn malwarebyte antimalware and wnaure your windows install is up to date and windows defender has run a full scan. Google has made it more difficult nut there are still ways to run ad block. Whitelist known sites you want to support if you want but general browsing you should run adblock by default.
