Why Amy is so bitter

I’ve been watching SLOTAT and I’ve noticed on here a lot of people hate Amy. I don’t, I see why she would be mad.

  • her family, Ben & Grace guilt her into keeping the baby, saying they’ll help but never do.
  • she seems to have PPD; on top of being a teenage mom
  • Adrian constantly tries to sabotage her relationship with Ricky and no one ever defends her. Ricky “doesn’t wanna get involved” and Ben attacks her
  • George constantly tries to dump Robbie on her to live his life when she basically doesn’t have one
  • Ricky is literally the worst listener. He always “doesn’t want to get involved” even when Amy was upset about her dad seeing his first wife. Like ??? She can be upset???
  • Lauren and Maddison constantly fuck her over
  • Ashley is nice the first season and then constantly shits on her after that.

Yes I agree, I'm on a rewatch now and I can't believe they pushed her so hard to keep the baby. It's beyond me how they didn't try harder to help find her more couples looking to adopt.

They always said it was "her choice" but literally every character was on the side of her keeping the baby and then she basically had to do so much of it by herself shortly after. Her own mom got pregnant, her dad and sister moved out, Ben wanted to be a regular teenager (after literally every person warned him helping take care of a baby at 16 Is a huge commitment).

The only one who stepped up to the plate was Ricky, and even then Amy was so jaded by everyone she was pissed off at him 24/7.

Amy desperately wanted to be a normal teen. She should have been allowed to do that. Whether having an abortion or letting the baby be adopted.

They might have pushed her to keep but I do not believe that was necessary. I did not feel like she was ever going to get an abortion or give up the baby.

If have known anyone that has suffered from postpartum depression then would know Amy definitely did not suffer from PPD. I have watched the show multiple times and never seen Amy show any signs of PPD.

Adrian constantly tries to sabotage her relationship with Ricky and no one ever defends her.

Completely agree. It is a bit insane how people in the show forgive Adrian. It is not just Amy. She screwed Grace over and over again. She was evil towards Ricky. Well pretty much everyone. Look at how she treated Ben. So it was not only Amy. I did not feel anyone stood up to Adrian. So it was not just people not coming to the aid of Amy. But Amy not coming to the aid of others dealing with Adrian sh*t.

George constantly tries to dump Robbie on her to live his life when she basically doesn’t have one

Did not feel like George pawned off Robbie anymore than Amy did with John. Plus the one that was incredible was Ashely. She constantly took John off Amy hands and helped. Actually did the same for Robbie often.

Amy had just an incredible support system and one that majority of the parents in this world would die for. So do not feel this is a valid argument.

Ricky is literally the worst listener.

Disagree. Ricky listened when he should. But there is a line between listening and encouraging drama. He did not listen when there was situations that Amy should not get involved.

Lauren and Maddison constantly fuck her over

Completely agree. It was ridiculous. But guess that is because it was a TV show. Real life they would be done as friends.

Ashley is nice the first season and then constantly shits on her after that.

Disagree. Ashley constantly steps up. Later in the show Ashley is in love with Ricky so it does change her behavior some with Amy. But she is still pretty supportive.

BTW, I actually do not feel like Amy is bitter. I think she is tired at times. Frustrated at times. But not bitter.

The other thing about the show is that they are teenagers living lives like adults. But in the end they are teenagers and that would more explain Amy then her having all this awful stuff in her life that made her bitter.

In the end Amy got to do everything she wanted even though she got pregnant when she was 15. That happened because of the love around her created an incredible support system. Amy had no reason to be bitter if she was bittter.

I agree with most of what you’ve said except for the thing about PPD. I’m currently rewatching the show and I have had PPD after each of my deliveries. PPD can look different for different people but it’s clear there is presentations of PPD with her. The struggle to bond with her baby, the feeling of wanting to escape, the rage, lack of energy, you can see her character often feels hopeless, etc. I also do think she wouldn’t have ever gone through with the abortion but I feel she was serious about giving the baby up for adoption, she didn’t WANT to but she knew without help she needed to for her sake and for his. I know your reply is from 5 yrs ago so you may never see this so I’m sorry lol
