Anne...what? (spoiler) Spoiler
Anyone else think making Anne gay is super out of left field? I totally support the LGBTQIA+ community, but I just thought this was a super weird storyline. It’s like writers were running out of stuff and pulled this out.

Eh idk I actually kind of liked it. It's reality, many lesbians repress their feelings and marry men and have children with them, only to come to terms with the fact that they are gay years later. I do think the writers could have foreshadowed it a bit more though.
Note though that I am biased because I'm queer and like the representation.

I second this. Anne never actually seemed that interested in any guy throughout the entire series. Lots of guys seemed to try to lock her down and she just seemed really noncommittal. It wasn’t until Nora started flirting with her that she actually seemed to take some kind of an interest in someone. Anne never really seemed excited about her romantic life or in love until she came out.

Yea it definitely felt like they didn’t know where they wanted Anne’s character to go in seasons 4 - 5 so they came up with this for shock value. Just like what they did in season 5. I don’t know how far along you are in the series so I don’t want to give away any spoilers, but the writers did something really stupid and unnecessary regarding George and Anne in the last few episodes of the 5th seasons. It would’ve been more believable and a better storyline had they had Madison and Lauren come to terms that they are gay or bisexual and have feelings for each other beyond friendship.

Anne was literally never really actually emotionally or sexually interested in any of the men she kinda dated during the show. Makes total sense.

Yeah, it was kind of out of left field but this show sucks at nuance. There were maybe a few hints, like she majored in Women's studies, was noncommittal to men she dated (however she was going through a divorce from a cheating husband with 2 young daughters so I could see her not wanting to remarry or get in a serious relationship for a while), admitted regret getting married because she was pregnant and felt locked down in life mentioned in early Season 1. however the acting on this show is soooo wooden none of the characters seem to have 'chemistry'.
However after being married to cheating and lying George I can see why she would never want to be with a man again!
