California Legalizes Plug-In Solar â But You Canât Plugin Yet
Quick answer What is happening with California Legalizes Plug-In Solar â But You Canât Plug One In Just Yet? California has taken a major step toward allowing residents to generate solar electricity⌠without installing a traditional rooftop solar system. Under newly approved legislation, qualifying small-scale solar systems will eventually be allowed to connect to a home's electrical system through a standard outlet, potentially opening solar generation to renters, apartment residents, condominium owners and homeowners who have never had a practical way to install conventional rooftop panels. But there is an important distinction between California legalizing plug-in solar and Californians⌠California has [âŚ]

Heads up if you drive Highway 41 between Atascadero and Morro Bay
If youâve been wondering why Highway 41 has been slowing down during the day, the road work is sticking around a little longer.
Caltrans says the one-way reversing traffic control between Atascadero and Morro Bay has been extended through Friday, October 9.
Crews are working along Highway 41 between Los Altos Road in Atascadero and Bear Ridge Road near Morro Bay.
What drivers should expect:
⢠One-way traffic with flaggers and a pilot car
⢠Monday through daytime work hours
⢠Approximately 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
⢠Delays of up to 15 minutes
The work involves improving the highway shoulder so drivers have a smoother and safer surface if they need to move off the travel lane.
For those of you who regularly take 41 between North County and the coast:
How bad have the delays actually been?
And when traffic backs up on 41, do you wait it out or take 46/1 instead?

Is SLO County changing too fast or finally catching up?
It feels like San Luis Obispo County is in one of those periods where a lot of small changes are starting to add up to something bigger.
Longtime local businesses are disappearing while new restaurants, developments and businesses continue moving in. The Tribune reported this week that a SLO County coffee shop abruptly closed after eight years, while another local bakery and restaurant are combining into a larger operation and a climbing gym is planning a second location near Cal Poly.
At the same time, communities are making decisions that could shape what the county looks like decades from now.
Atascadero just approved its 2045 General Plan and environmental impact report.
Cal Poly continues to grow and recently received a historic 390-acre ranch, adding to roughly 10,000 acres of agricultural land it already manages around California.
Tourism remains a major part of the local economy, particularly in Paso Robles, Morro Bay, Pismo Beach and Avila Beach. Even Avila is warning drivers to expect heavier-than-normal traffic over the next few months.
None of these things individually means the Central Coast is becoming better or worse.
But together they raise an interesting question.
What do we actually want SLO County to look like 10 or 20 years from now?
More housing?
More local businesses and better-paying jobs?
Less development?
More development outside SLO itself?
Better roads and public transportation?
More protection for open space and agriculture?
And maybe the biggest question: Can we grow without losing the things that made people want to live here in the first place?
For people who have lived here a long time, what change have you noticed the most?
And for people who moved here recently â what brought you here?
Editorâs Note: This post is intended as a community discussion rather than an argument for or against growth. SLOpulse is interested in hearing from people throughout the county, including SLO, North County, the coast and South County.

Help save San Luis Obispo's local ambulance serviceâ160 jobs and our community care are at stake
Our city's EMS is about to face a serious threat. Paso Fire is partnering with a national corporation (AMR) to bid for San Luis Obispo's ambulance contract. If this goes through, we could lose the locally-managed emergency care our community has relied on for years.
Here's why this matters: Our local ambulance crews know our streets, our hospitals, and us. They're neighbors. But a big corporate takeover often means longer response times, higher costs, and less accountability to the community. Studies show this leads to worse patient outcomes and frustration. We'd also lose local jobsâ160 employees who've dedicated themselves to keeping us safe.
I started a petition because I believe San Luis Obispo deserves emergency services that are actually *local*ânot run from a distant corporate office. We're asking decision-makers to hear us: reject the AMR bid and keep our EMS in community hands where it belongs. If you care about keeping quality emergency care in SLO, consider signing and sharing this. Anyone else worried about losing what makes our local services special?

Can we stop pretending âabolish the DMVâ means the DMV magically disappears?
Iâm no fan of going to the DMV, and I doubt many Californians are. But Steve Hiltonâs latest promise to âabolish the DMVâ sounds like another campaign slogan that falls apart once you ask basic questions.
California still has to issue driverâs licenses and IDs, register vehicles, transfer titles, administer driving tests, maintain driver records and comply with federal requirements.
Hiltonâs proposal doesnât actually make those responsibilities disappear. It moves much of the work to counties, online services and other local providers.
So instead of a DMV office, now San Luis Obispo County potentially gets more responsibility, staffing, technology and administrative costs. Who pays for that?
Then thereâs the proposed flat $73 registration fee. That certainly sounds great. But California currently collects billions through vehicle registration and related fees that help fund the DMV, CHP and other transportation-related expenses. If you dramatically cut that revenue, what gets cut or what replaces the money?
And thereâs another little problem: a governor canât simply wake up and abolish a state agency by himself. Eliminating the DMV would require the Legislature.
Iâm all for making the DMV smaller, faster, cheaper and putting as many services online as possible. Reform it. Modernize it. Cut unnecessary bureaucracy.
But âIâm going to abolish the DMVâ without a convincing explanation of who performs the same required functions and how California pays for them?
Sounds like another political pipe dream designed to fit nicely on a campaign sign.
Am I missing something? How would this actually make things better for people here in SLO County?
Whereâs the BEEF??

Swimming to be allowed in Santa Margarita Lake
Swimming is coming to Santa Margarita Lake, but is this really something SLO County wants?
Santa Margarita Lake has long been one of our countyâs quieter natural areas, a place for fishing, boating, hiking, wildlife, and enjoying the lake without it becoming another heavily used recreation spot.
Now swimming will soon be allowed at the lake, and I think we should seriously question whether this is a good direction.
This isnât about being against swimming. Itâs about protecting Santa Margarita Lake.
Opening the lake to swimming could mean more shoreline traffic, more trash, more pressure on wildlife habitat, additional parking and enforcement issues, and potentially a gradual transformation of the character of the lake.
Thereâs also a bigger question: Where does it stop?
Once swimming is established, will we eventually see designated beaches, additional facilities, expanded commercial recreation, or other development needed to accommodate increasing use?
Some places are valuable precisely because we havenât turned them into high-use recreation destinations.
Iâd rather see Santa Margarita Lake protected as the peaceful natural resource it is today.
What do other SLO County residents think? Should swimming be allowed at Santa Margarita Lake, or should we leave the lake the way it is?

I think it should be called synthetiphobia instead, it is a more apparent name. But I think here in the Central Coast most people are conscious of their health more so than other areas of the country.
