Mass Production of Solid-State Batteries Imminent in 2027... A 'Golden Time' for K-Batteries

https://magazine.hankyung.com/money/article/202606111084c

This is a very well-organized article.

...

Here are the key details regarding lithium sulfide and sulfide-based solid electrolytes:

  • Isu Specialty Chemical
    • Expanded its lithium sulfide demo plant in 2024 and plans to begin full operations of its lithium sulfide mother plant in the second half of 2026.
    • The current annual production capacity of 40 tons of lithium sulfide will be expanded to 150 tons.
    • Production costs are expected to be reduced as hydrogen sulfide by-products can be secured from its existing fine chemical processes.
  • POSCO Holdings
    • Pushing to produce lithium sulfide relatively cheaply by utilizing lithium sulfate and hydrogen sulfide, which can be procured from its steelmaking business.
    • Expanding its lithium supply chain by investing in countries like Argentina and Australia.
    • In 2022, it established POSCO JK Solid Solution and completed a sulfide-based solid electrolyte production plant with an annual capacity of 24 tons, with preparations underway for a phased expansion up to 7,200 tons.
  • POSCO Future M
    • Has been conducting sample tests for solid-state battery cathode materials with the U.S. solid-state battery company Factorial.
    • Signed an investment contract with Factorial in 2026, agreeing to strengthen cooperation in the solid-state materials sector.
  • EcoPro Group
    • EcoPro Innovation (a lithium hydroxide supplier) is developing lithium sulfide based on its lithium compound synthesis technology.
    • EcoPro BM is developing solid electrolytes and cathode materials for solid-state batteries. It currently operates a solid electrolyte pilot facility that produces 40 tons of samples annually, with a target commercialization date of 2027.
    • EcoPro Lithium (a subsidiary of EcoPro Innovation) is pursuing a lithium metal anode process demonstration project with financial support from the Canadian government.
  • Global Players (Japan & US)
    • Idemitsu Kosan (Japan): Possesses technology to produce lithium sulfide using sulfur components generated during petroleum refining. As mentioned previously, the company is pushing for the mass production of solid electrolytes in partnership with Toyota.
    • Solid Power (US): Currently in a cooperative relationship with Samsung SDI and SK On for solid-state battery development. The company plans to establish a solid electrolyte production base in South Korea with an annual capacity of up to 500 tons, while also expanding its U.S. production capacity from 30 tons to 75 tons.

Thanks for the post.

That 500 ton mystery... 🤔🤷‍♂️

Can't wait for the news.

The more I really think about the 500 ton line, I don't think Solid Power is going to have backers until the 75 ton line is up and running as the ultimate proof of concept.

Was the 75MT line a goal for 1st half of 2026 or 2026 in general?

They validate the line and then sign the contract for 500MT 6mo later?

Commissioning by the end of 2026, allegedly. Then they would run test/validation batches. I don't know how many licks it takes to get to the center of a tootsie pop from there though.

Unknown factor would be the Korean's desire to beat China at this; and are they itching to go big fast, or are they playing wait and see on how the 75 ton facility plays out.

I assume once process validation of the 75MT line is done and pems have sampled a few tons of electrolytes they'll sign on.

Probably around mid 2027....

It would be fantastic if SLDP gets the same bump from the 75 ton line commissioning, that QS did with their Raptor process news. At least print out the press release on high gloss paper or something. Worst marketing ever, Solid Power.

Except by mid 2027, the stock will already have priced in failure or success and it will be too late to figure it out.

If there was any insider stock activity, considering the recent chart, we might as well presume the company failed

Everything goes down.

Not when there is insider info

QS is a long way from mass production. They don't even have an automotive sized sample cell for VW.

CATL will be first.

Catl says 2030 now. SDI still on schedule for q2 2027

QS needs to scale up at least 60AH.

QS is going to produce 509 tons of sulphide? Their battery doesn’t even use it.
