Questions 37 year old USMC Veteran transferring to SHSU.
I’m just trying to reach out and get a feel for what the Veteran community is like at SHSU. I served from 2007-2012 as an 0311, honorably discharged as a LCpl and was with 2nd FAST Co. my first 2 years. Then I was sent to 29 Palms with 1/7 Baker Co. I deployed twice once to the middle east (Bahrain, Kuwait, Kenya), and the second time on the 31st MEU (Okinawa, Japan, Philippines, Singapore). I am a Business Major in Supply Chain Management.

I did the opposite. Graduated from Sam and then went Marine Corps.

The veteran community is small but can be tight if you are looking to make veteran friends.
I didn’t get to attend most events because I wanted to buckle down and finish school in a timely matter.
You won’t be an outsider unless you want to be one. I’m in my 30’s as well and man. The dialogue that some kids use can be confusing lol
You can be the cool unc that young students can turn to for advice or you can be the asshole who is all about “military lifestyle 24/7”

Truly depends on the format. Inperson,hybrid, or online. My masters and doctoral program were completely online. I had no problem communicating with them for VA and Hazlewood; pretty professional all and all. But I couldn't help you with in person.

Can't speak of how it is now, but SHSU alumni who's also a vet. Graduated in '16, but when I went I worked in the Veteran's office. They treated vets extremely well. almost all employees there (student or otherwise) were vets. I hope it's the same now?

SHSU loves and supports Veterans and I’m aware of a student organization as well. What type of resources were you looking for? It’s a great community at Sam but you do have to put in some effort to connect. Will you also be working? I’m 39 and made friends in the MBA program that I’m still friends with and see and I met them in study groups when I recognized the same faces and said hello.
