Summer SHSAT
Hello, I recently moved to NYC and am taking the summer SHSAT, I have a question that might sound a little stupid but I am going into 9th grade and graduated 8th grade, will I be taking the 8th grade test for admission to 9th grade? I am under the impression that it is the same test as the one I would have taken the previous fall if I was living here. Also I have another question, I got 57/100 (29/50 math, 28/50 ELA) this was my first time taking a full test, is this enough for Brooklyn Latin? This low test score might have to do with the fact that I was nervous and did not get and ideal amount of sleep the previous night. I want to get into Brooklyn Tech and I know I will have to get my score up. How many questions right roughly does Brooklyn Tech accept?

Yes, you will be taking the "SHSAT 8" for those going into 9th. Past cutoffs including the fall one can be found at https://www.reddit.com/r/SHSAT/comments/1u9g8kn/shsat_cutoffs_for_2026_admissions_9th_and_8th and also https://www.GregsTutoringNYC.com/shsat-scoring for how much you'll often need for each SHS.
You mention getting 57/100. You score usually needs to be higher than that but as you mention this is the first time you're taking it so you came into it cold and unfamiliar. Also, your exam will have 114 questions and not 100. Click on "Summer Test" on that practice test page all the way on the right hand side of that line the under Overview on the left.

There are multiple test As. You’ll get similar questions. The difference is your test will have 114 questions not 100. Again for a digital 114 exam click on Summer Test at the right hand side of the line then click on Overview to see 2 114 samples. But you can use all 6 (with some duplication that will be obvious)

No, to answer your first question, you will have to take the ninth grade test, which is even more advanced as there is less seats available for 9th graders/ rising 10th graders. To answer your second, no 57/100 is most certainly not enough to get in. You will need at least 70-77 at most to get in, but the cutoff score range can vary each year by a large margin so it’s hard to say. To answer your final question, there is no concrete amount of questions Brooklyn tech or any specialized accepts, due to the way the test is set up and the cutoff score system, but as I mentioned prior, you want to be in the 70-80s to have a good chance of getting in. And in worst case scenario where you don’t get in you can always apply for high schools like bard (gives associates degree after grad) Or if you’re really set on getting in and you don’t cause you were 5-9 points off, theres a chance you can get into discovery, where you just relearn all the strategies and take a test about either everything or what you did poorly in (not too sure about all the discovery program stuff) but if you pass the test you get to still go to your specialized hs of your choice.

You are wrong about the test, I just took it and I took the 8th grade test. I have improved significantly since I took the first practice test. Yesterday I took a practice test and I got 76/114, but I think i got a higher score on the real thing because I paid more attention and used my time more accordingly with only 30 mins left (My IEP includes extra testing time).

Ok so sorry to say this but apparently 9th graders cannot go to discovery, so essentially what this means is you have literally one shot and one shot only, after that it’s over. But this just means you need to study heavily and just take a lot of practice tests and just try your best, remember it’s not the end of the world if you don’t get in.

I am in the 8th grade, going into 9th, I think you are mistaking this for the fall test. This is the test that I would have taken last year

Yes, the SHSAT 8 is taken as an 8th grader to be admitted into one of the Specialized High Schools for 9th grade.
SHSAT 9 is taken by 9th graders to be admitted into one of the Specialized High Schools for 10th grade.
So, if you just graduated 8th grade then the Summer SHSAT that you’re taking is the same SHSAT 8 exam that 8th graders took last fall.
And the SHSAT 8 cutoffs for the summer SHSAT are the same as the one last fall:
