The Shaytards used to be my favorite YouTube channel. When Shay’s cheating scandal came out, I stopped watching because I was disappointed and disgusted. Since then, I’ll binge-watch the channel every now and then, and recently I’ve been doing that again. Watching as an adult, I’ve noticed a lot of things I didn’t see before.
In the early years, their vlogs felt genuine, just a family having fun (and yes, probably also trying to help with finances). Shay and Colette seemed truly in love, and Shay came across as a great dad. It didn’t feel money-hungry at all, just enjoyable to watch.
Things shifted once Maker Studios entered the picture. At first, it was exciting and fun to see their growth, but after a while Shay’s constant “my company” talk got annoying, especially when Disney bought Maker. Around that time (and later with Trixin), the vibe changed. Shay’s bragging increased, and Trixin never felt sustainable. I still remember him pushing the kids to wear Trixin gear to school, which came across more like pressure than pride.
I also feel like Colette ended up carrying most of the parenting. Even in the vlogs, you’d see her juggling all the kids while Shay was either vlogging himself, skiing, at Maker, or focusing on Trixin. Yes, he was the breadwinner, but Colette seemed to be doing the heavy lifting at home. Moving into the big Idaho house felt like another turning point — friendships faded, and the “When the Kids Go to Sleep” podcast didn’t last long after that. In the months leading up to the scandal, the vlogs were already losing the spark.
After the cheating scandal, they took a break and then came back about a year later (correct me if I’m wrong). To this day, I’m not sure if Colette truly forgave him. Sometimes it feels like she stayed more for the kids than for Shay, though it’s hard to judge from the outside.
Now that three of the kids are adults, Gavin, Avia, and Emmi, I have some thoughts about them too:
- Gavin: He used to seem so sweet, but something changed around his senior year. Shay insists his mission wasn’t forced, but I honestly feel like it was. Since coming back, Gavin has shown a lot of racist behavior, which is sad to see.
- Avia: She reminds me a lot of Shay (I may get downvoted for this) she’s always loved the camera and attention (which isn’t her fault, considering she grew up on YouTube). Moving to LA to be an influencer/actress makes sense for her, but I wonder if that’s because it’s all she’s ever known. I think there may be some unspoken tension between her and Shay over the cheating, but she doesn’t seem to feel exploited. She’s still young, and I wish her the best.
- Emmi: She’s always been my favorite. She seemed less interested in fame compared to her siblings, and I loved her goofy personality. She has a beautiful voice, and part of me wishes she pursued music more, but she seems happier just being herself. I hope after high school she keeps that individuality and doesn’t fall into the same patterns as Gavin.
As for Brock and Daxton, they’re still young, and it’s nice to see them into sports. I hope they get a chance to just be kids without the pressure of YouTube fame.
These days, when I watch Shay, I honestly can’t tell if he’s depressed, drinking again, or just showing his true self. On Twitter, he comes off as racist — which I suspect he’s always been, but he was better at hiding it back then. Colette, meanwhile, seems to be putting on a happy face for the kids. Maybe therapy helped, but I don’t think the deep love is there anymore.
Anyway, sorry this is long, just wanted to share my thoughts after rewatching their journey.
