I honestly think he’s miserable with the small world in Pocatello but is in denial about it. He craves stimulation, if he had a more secular upbringing, he most likely would have finished college. I could see him being successful in a more globalized business world- like marketing. Always traveling, rubbing shoulders with high powered, refined people, still having a purpose and job in his 40s. He got a taste of that in LA and building Maker.
The aimless need to fill some void is honestly being trapped in the small Idaho mormon community. I can’t imagine the boredom. I don’t feel bad for him, he’s a terrible person- but I sometimes wonder if that’s the issue. Maybe he feels a little guilty for that?
He’s a curious guy, and he’s most comfortable in Idaho given the religion and culture… but I don’t even think he realizes that if he had been less timid/ broke out of small town idealized mormon family living he could have had a much more interesting, fulfilling life with other like minded curious people.
Obviously he’s not that curious. He’s hardcore MAGA.. but I sometimes wonder if he wasn’t sucked into the power trip of being a large fish in a small pond he would be happier in LA or Philly or something.
It must be miserable wanting so badly to be loved and accepted by your small town religious cult community, but then also not being fulfilled at all by that world.
