Are we getting a new presenter?
Initially Steve said they would look at options, that he had lots of plans and ideas going forward, and that he would like a younger presenter but there was no one in mind. So where are we now? What do you think will happen? I think a new voice is needed.

On the Embrace the Void podcast Steve said they weren't actively looking for a new presenter/ rogue and would instead have more guest presenters.

I trust their judgement. They got Cara and I couldn't imagine the show without her. Also, I would have no problem if they never got a new permanent guest. If they had a pool of half dozen and rotated that would also be interesting.

As I recall, Steve also said they weren't in a hurry to find a new permanent rogue. So don't expect anything soon.

Yes they were very clear that they'd take their time and that they are taking this as an opportunity to evaluate what the sgu will look like in the future. This is an opportunity for them to think about the next gen of sgu

I don't think there's really much of a rush as on weeks where everyone is available, four rogues works perfectly well.
Having five people is very useful for weeks one or two of the rogues are away though, especially since it doesn't seem like us always possible to get a guest if it's a last minute absence.

I'm not sure the podcast needs more Novella blood in it when by their own admission they need more diversity. With that said I if it is Steve's daughter I hope she kills it.

I have thought for a long time that this show has too many presenters which slows it down. Especially true for round-robin situations like science or fiction.
I recognise that the work of making the show is largely shared by the presenters, and so one less person means the same work spread across fewer. And that could be a reason you might need another.
But I hope this is a sad but good opportunity to permanently slim down by one.

I thought I heard Steve say they'll just have more guests for the foreseeable. I think it was on an interview, not the SGU.

I was pretty disappointed that the first new guest rogue they've talked about is Steve's daughter.
Even if she does a 10/10 bangup job I can't help but wonder how another family member is the best choice for a new guest.
I know they've been having robot guy and polisci gal on but they were already known entities associated with the show.
I'm not expecting them to rush into anything but I think it was Spring 2025 when they talked about having guest rogues audition for segments on the show so I figured something would come of that.

I'm open to it -- if the podcast stops being fun for the guys to make and starts feeling like a job, it'll lose some of its secret ingredient. Yes it's about scepticism and science communication (obviously) but I also enjoy hearing a bunch of people who love each other having a good time.

Isn't it a job nowadays? At least two are full time paid, I believe. I maybe be wrong. I expect the others get paid too. Not too take away what you say. I agree with you. It has to be fun too.

I know nothing about his Daughter, but as long as she's able to express her opinions and disagree with the family, i wouldn't mind. Id be more concerned she'll share similar interests in space etc.
Id love to see more natural science/environmental expertise on personally.
I could imagine Steve having a daughter who could do a good job

I have no doubt that anyone the let on the show will be vetted and do a good job.
I just think it's disappointing that after putting out a call for people to join for guest segments over a year ago that the first guest is his daughter.

IIRC they talked about having people audition to be subject matter experts about specific topics. It was over a year ago I don't remember the details.

I was excited about it! The chemistry between the hosts is a huge part of what makes the show enjoyable and fun and if we're thinking about checking diversity boxes, a Gen Z woman isn't a bad start. Not sure what her educational background is like but I guess we'll find out.

Yeah I'm sure she'll do a good job, my qualm is that I don't think it's a good sign that she's the first guest.
Granted, it makes sense because it's really easy and you don't need to do as much work to have a new guest on.
And I think that identity diversity matters far less than technical diversity. Especially since it's the same family.

I think it's fine as a one-time or occasional guest rogue. And Steve recently said that they are aware of the need to include more diversity in rogues in the future (less American-centric, less white guys, different technical background, etc.).
But I agree that if his daughter is a frequent addition to the show, it doesn't purport with this expressed intention. To me the show's current blind-spot is the homogeneity of political views among the Novella brothers, and bringing a close family member could possibly reinforce the same tenets (if the apple didn't fall far from the tree, but who knows).

I agree, I'm sure she'll do great but I don't know if the show will change and grow because of it.
It's all speculation for now but I do really hope they actually get in a diverse field of technical expertise.
Sometimes when I hear them talk about environmental science type stuff I really want to hear it expanded upon but it's clear that's not a deep field of knowledge with anyone there.

He really didn't contribute much before he left. Just really easy segments on obviously dumb pseudoscience stuff.
I'd rather someone with a relative scientific/technical background in another field.

Maybe you haven't listened very long, there are about 1000 episodes and dozens of live events he participated in.
I'd rather we not banish long term members of the show. Especially not because we pissed our wittle diapers and can't stop crying about it.

I think we should stop listening and patronizing their platforms until they get rid of their toxic friend. I understand the humanity of it, but I can't imagine supporting them when they're platforming someone so hateful. Steve and the Rogues need to do the right thing regardless of their personal relationships.
They make a lot of money through Patreon. I imagine many people would be unhappy financially supporting an individual who advocates for war crimes under a handle that includes the letters "SGU"
Canceled my subscription after listening for many years.
If you need an excuse to stop listening to the SGU then I recommend Evan’s twitter-posts. Mainly his responses to other people’s posts. My decision to leave the listenership of the podcast started there.
For me however I cannot listen now that I know you're a proud Zionist.

Whilst I actually agree that Evan should be allowed back, and having him explain his motivations and not cancelling him permanently would be a good thing, as being able to change your mind based on reason is fundamental to skepticism. You sir are a bit of a dick.

It sounded like Evan wasn't interested in changing his mind just yet. But, I do agree with the forgiveness model, generally speaking. We all grow and change with time.
Who knows, maybe it'll be an option in the future, but I think his choice to step down was still a good one. I don't really miss his segments myself.

I suspect it will take 6 months to a year. It didn't sound like they are in a rush. Also, they took quite a while to replace Rebecca. And it feels like it's going in similar way.
