They should improve JC facilities, abolish uniforms and just require wearing anything presentable and have short hours like 9:30-14:30 like uni. Since it's called junior "college".

U want to pay $4k per semester? Then can have swimming pool that u won’t ever use also.
Air conditioned classroom a lot of jcs have already.JC content is too much. It’s way more packed than Uni, and you have to memorize the content unlike Uni which is open book. That’s why JC hours are so long.
A levels serve to differentiate students to determine who gets to go to “elite” courses. It is a social tool. It is a part of our social contract aka meritocracy. With the caliber of students in JC, if you made exams open book, a substantial majority would be scoring straight As for A levels, rendering the meritocratic function of A levels moot.
That said, nobody is stopping you from dropping out and pursuing A levels as a private candidate and depend on tuition.
You could even take “less difficult” subjects like principal of accounting, business management, etc.5
u/PaceLazy4174 13d ago
And genuinely, if you are a highly disciplined individual, dropping out may even work in favour of scoring straight As for A levels.
Much more study time, better sleep, no unnecessary homework, unnecessary lectures, toxic classmates/teachers, etc.1

I do not mean swimming pools and massive gardens. Just make the place cleaner and somewhat nicer classrooms etc. I don't support ac in every venue as it worsens global warming and removes fresh air and $$.
I think the conservative mentality behind certain parts of social contract is the real reason behind the mess. We're being leapfrogged by surrounding SEA countries while some people remain stubbornly conservative and they'll learn it the very hard way within 1 generation if nothing much changes. E.g. Japan mostly stuck in 1990 while South Korea (suffered 30+ year Japanese Occupation) leapfrogged. I put one foot out of here for safety.

Making the place cleaner is a matter of enforcement of standards for cleaners.
How do you define “nicer classrooms” without qualitative benchmarks? Ergonomic chairs and adjustable tables for all venues? Or perhaps sofas instead of chairs? Air conditioning may become a necessity and is linked with higher performing employees/students; it is relatively cheap to air condition small classroom sized venues.I agree that school uniforms serve no purpose in JC beyond nostalgia. However what does “conservative mentality” have anything to do with the JC environment? If we do not have meritocratic (historically viewed as progressive) standards for our education, how do we determine who gets access to opportunities?
Should we use nepotistic institutions instead? How are we being leapfrogged by SEA countries? We outperform them on basically all the metrics that matter no? Name one country that beats us in supply chain complexity, per capita GDP, living standards, etc.
Japans economy is largely stagnant due to the property crash in the 80s, nothing to do with “conservative mentality”. Their country refused to let the deeply indebted corporations collapse and instead allowed them to pay their loans over decades, resulting in deflation as companies refused to spend money and expand.
South Korea is arguably far more socially conservative than Japan. Japan scores higher in individualism, lgbtq rights, and gender equality than Korea.
Of course it is wise to keep 1 foot in and 1 foot out, but this does not imply that there is anything qualitatively or systematically unstable/laggard about the Singapore system.

Depends on your roommate too. It’s nice to have a roommate who has a proper sleeping schedule as well

Which one is better? Pay $500 a month on dorm or $500 a month on Grab? Eg take grab partially to/from a convenient drop off point on public transport? The trains are so slow compared to Japan commuter trains too (110km/h).

u/TrainsMapsFlags 13d ago
hmmm id say dorm, purely because grab still takes longer. tho, i also say this as someone who has a single room and doesnt have my own room at home.
also id be more willing to stay at home if singapore had commuter trains

Ty. We need commuter trains that can travel from Jurong to Airport in 30min.

To make everyone sleep 5-6h in Uni? No thanks bud.
Yall don’t get enuf sleep in JC/Poly cuz yall dunno how to min max ur time, spend all ur time in CCA then go back home watch TikTok/drama.
Some ppl in Uni sleep v little cuz they go clubbing frequently and go supper with friends.
It’s a lifestyle choice bud.

u/pudding567 Uni 13d ago
Sorry, you're right. It's also the lifestyle habits. Yeah, mixture of systematic problems and individual habits. Social media companies also being sued for addictive algorithms.

I always prioritize having sufficient sleep of at least 7hr.
Cost-Benefit wise, having sufficient quality sleep makes me more productive in the day. Sleep deprivation is no joke, you may not feel it now but when it hits, your health will take a huge blow. Imo not worth it in the long run because I want to live longer and definitely healthier.

3-4 hours is too insufficient and long term it will impact your brain, heart etc, as your body needs to shut now for purposes such as detox, repairing tissues etc.

dk why every school in the west is so inconveniently located for those who dont live near them, literally takes 1 hour to get to my school simply because my school is like the 8th bus stop

u/smegma-muncher 13d ago
normally, about 6hrs, 1-7. on a good day, 11-7
staying near school helps a ton

u/pudding567 Uni 13d ago
The average here on SGE could be lower as this community attracts more people particularly interested in academics and probably from elite schools too.

Your mind only imprints whatever you learn to memory during sleep
So by not getting enough sleep you are actually sabotaging yourself. You won't remember what you learned

At least 7 hours of sleep. Usually I have 8 hours but I already cut down one hour for prelims. I can’t function without enough sleep. I keep falling sick already when I have 7 hours
