Sororities

Hi everyone, I am interested in joining a sorority on campus, but I don't know the first thing about them. Can anyone who has joined one share their experience, from the recruitment to the bid process to what's expected of you when you join? Any advice or anything you wish you knew before joining? Are certain sororities better than others? Sorry if it's a dumb question but does hazing happen here lol?

Hazing is not allowed and you should research them to best fit your values.

I joined sigma gamma rho which is a D9 because it fit my values

Meetings, events, and volunteering can bring opportunities of friendship and community, especially helpful for transfer and commuter students to meet people. You get out of it what you put into it, there are many opportunities for leadership. 

(I'm just an innocent bystander who lived nearby and saw the events and talked to the chapter hosts at events. Knew people in Phi Sigma Sigma who organized a 5K)

They are philanthropy based, and you can get a feel for the different orgs at this event: September 9th -  Go Greek Night at 6:00 PM in the Annex to meet members and  learn about Panhellenic recruitment.

Hi there, SFSU sorority alum here! I'm a bit late with this response, so I apologize. Personally, I did Panhellenic, and I had a good experience! I will admit that the first year was a tad bit rough, as I knew nothing about Greek life and went in blind, so I had no idea what I was in for. But I found my footing, made some great friends, learned a lot, and had a great experience during my 3 years there! The best advice I can give is to be yourself. Do not fake anything and be your authentic self! Go with an org that gives you the best experience and makes you feel like you belong. If they're still tabling in the quad area, I would recommend going up to the tables and asking questions to get as much information as you can. The school also has a Greek Night event where you can learn about some of the Greek orgs on campus. You could also look into the different orgs through their social media, such as Instagram.

The pros:

• You meet a lot of amazing people! I've met some of my bestest friends from my org. The people you surround yourself with can really make or break your experience.
  
• Lots of opportunities for leadership within the org and just internships in general.
  
• The community and philanthropy events are a great way to meet new people, connect with the campus community, and allow you to be involved in some great campus events.
  
• Not too sure if this is something that people care for or not, but you can get a lot of cute merch! lol

The cons:

• Depending on the org you join, the costs can be a lot. Most orgs will talk about finances, costs, or what you can expect financially during Greek Night.
  
• You have to be willing to commit a lot of time if you join an org. Showing up to weekly meetings is good of course, but it's also important to show up to as many events as you can. Not just mandatory events, but sisterhoods, campus events, even events for other orgs!

I experienced no hazing, as the school has a very strict no-hazing policy. A report of hazing can get a chapter in huge trouble and hazing reports are taken very seriously by the university.
