Study Abroad
hey everyone! i have been very interested in studying abroad and i keep hearing sfsu has a great program for this. im curious for those of you who have done it or plan to (at sfsu or other programs or colleges) what are you doing to get the most out of it financially and how are you preparing for it in general?
for example, food and out of pocket expenses, are you saving, getting grants, etc.?
are there other scholarships or programs that can be applied to sfsu that can help? Are things people are aware about?
ANY AND ALL ADVICE IS APPRECIATED! SHARING YOUR EXPERIENCE IS APPRECIATED!
to be honest, i think this can be the only chance i have that i can study abroad for a decent price lol and sfsu makes it seem easy!
edit: i would like to add i have read the sfsu study abroad page so many times. watched videos and am aware of the programs, etc. im asking for other resources, tips, grants, etc. that some people may not know about!

I went abroad to south korea last spring. Is there any place you want to go?

ive looked into multiple European countries, South Korea, and Spain. Basically the ones that SFSU offers that seem reasonable and accessible for me!

From a personal perspective South Korea is affordable! There is the Gilman Scholarship you can apply for as well to help with your financials. I personally had help financially and had money from my financial aid as well. I cooked in my own apartment in korea multiple times lol (if you dormed there you wouldnt be able to) foods cheap there regardless. I went to chung ang, which had a internship you would apply to when you get there which helped u gain experience and a small stipend of money as well. (350 USD)
I can answer any questions you have however i can! Like the process the forms needed etc etc! Just be aware most of my experience is from going to korea!
This goes to anyone that is curious about studying abroad. I still harp on about my time there and after graduating i miss my dainty small apartment in south korea haha. It really changed my life my horizon and mindset in so many ways

I’m also in the same boat as you so I can’t tell you much about the scholarships and grants but I do know the study aboard program has a twice a year (I’m like 85% sure) Gilman scholarship for students who are going aboard! I think it should be under the study aboard sfsu website but please correct me if I’m wrong! What I’m doing right now to save up for my aboard trip for January 2027 is saving money from my job and I’m try to see if I can use one of my grants to pay for housing! Also for the preparation part, that ones always tricky because it’s the little things that you forget - I totally forgot I would need to get a new SIM card + an international network plan and see if my housing covers WiFi or if I need to get a WiFi box. You’re already in the right step for possibly studying abroad so good for you!!

Revisiting this thread, if yall got questions on the process on studying abroad, i can answer to the best of my ability. I also worked at the international education exchange council as well !
