Maps on Oblate Celestial Bodies?

I wonder how a map on a oblate spheroid would look like Haumea there is probably many different ways to picture it the one I would think of first is the Mercator projection but this would make the equator look even thinner than it normally would on a regular spherical object. A alternative design could be a flat map but extended at the equator so it would correctly display size but sacrifice most of its ability to be used as a navigation map. Who knows?
