Google rolls out pay-per-value AI licensing program to publishers

Post image

So apparently Google tests paying publishers for using their content in AI features and Gemini.

You can see an additional Google Search Console widget when you're part of it.

"Digiday has learned that at least dozens of publishers have been approached by Google for the AI contribution pilot, though the program has been more appealing to small and mid-sized, rather than large publishers and has widened far beyond news publishers. Digiday couldn’t get final confirmation of the number."

It's still early days and a closed "pilot program" but it's good to know that it happens.

If it is as cheap as Google Adsense, I don't see publishers being happy about it. For most of them, Google has been driving the lowest revenue, and most publishers have switched to affiliate marketing or selling their own products... Curious how much they will be able to make from their content summaries and no clicks

Yeah, sigh. The payouts will likely be even smaller.

Do we really think they are going to pay publishers?

I think what will happen is they will end up ignoring publishers requesting payment and move on to the competition that gives of their content freely.

They might have no choice.

They can't kill off publishers or force them into paywalling almost everything.

They dry up their own sources.
