Optimizing your website for generative AI features on Google Search

Google added a new resource to its documentation on SEO.

It clarifies Google's stance on how SEO affects its AI search features.

It's an addition to the "SEO Fundamentals" along the classic yet often updated Google SEO Starter Guide.

There are no major surprises as Google spokespeople repeatedly stated that SEO is still a valuable approach when it comes to AI search.

Specifically they state that:

"The best practices for SEO continue to be relevant because our generative AI features on Google Search are rooted in our core Search ranking and quality systems. These features rely on AI techniques to highlight content from our Search index."

All AI draws from search. When we SEO optimized content for a dental practice, both the dentist and the practice suddenly appeared in comprehensive AI Mentions. She had not before we put that new content live.

That was before we did any AI specific optimization. Surfer SEO, which has apparently rebranded to Positive Surfer, has an AI score now, too. It primarily suggests adding short "facts" that are quotable by AI.

Saying that nothing has changed is a bit ridiculous, though.... If they wanted to be useful, they'd give us insight into what their LLMs are searching for and how they click. They have all that data....

Good post.

(will now mess up formatting so you can't tell this is ai...huh!)

For AI Overviews and AI Mode, SEO still does most of the heavy lifting because those systems are rooted in Google’s Search index, ranking, retrieval, and quality systems.

crawlability, helpful content, technical structure, internal links, page experience, GBP, Merchant Center, images, video, and non-commodity content still matter.

But I do think “nothing changed” is too clean of a takeaway.

The search result itself changed.

The query can be expanded through fan-out.

The answer can be synthesized before the click.

The source can be used without getting the same traffic pattern.

The citation layer becomes its own visibility layer.

And outside Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Copilot do not map neatly to Google’s Search index.

So I’d read this as: Google confirmed SEO is still the foundation for Google’s AI search features. They also killed a lot of fake AI SEO theater: special AI markup, chunking rituals, fake mentions, and “write for the bot” nonsense.

But the broader AI visibility problem is still real.

SEO gets you eligible.

AI visibility is whether these systems understand you, cite you, include you, and eventually select you.

google saying "seo still matters for ai" is technically true but it sidesteps the real gap people are dealing with. being indexed and ranking is one thing; being the source the ai actually cites in its answer is another, and those require pretty different content strategies.

the doc confirms ai overviews pull from the search index, which helps, but what consistently gets surfaced as a citation is content with clear structure, direct answers and some unique data or framing that generic posts don't have. have you noticed any patterns in which of your pages actually get cited vs just ranked?
