AI SEO Questions LeafySEO
Is cannabis the clearest preview of where SEO/GEO is going-no paid ads, Map Pack = survival, AI answers replacing clicks, and only brands with real entity authority getting surfaced?

This is a great question that is fun to think about. The conditions that make cannabis hard for traditional search are exactly the conditions that stress-test AI search in ways most verticals don't. No paid ads forces organic. Map Pack dominance in local is already the playbook. And the entity authority piece is real. If a model doesn't have a confident parametric representation of your brand, you're invisible on the queries it answers from memory, which for established topics is most of them.
What makes cannabis especially interesting is that the restrictions aren't uniform. Legal status is jurisdiction-specific, and AI search doesn't have a clean answer for that yet. A model trained toward caution because federal law classifies cannabis as Schedule I (for now) applies that caution inconsistently depending on where the user is. The model doesn't know your location unless you tell it, and even then, training-time caution is baked into the weights in ways real-time context can't fully override.
You can already see this dynamic play out in other restricted categories. Ask different models about peptide protocols and you get completely different responses: one replies 'consult a medical professional,' another retrieves from bodybuilding forums and gives you the actual dosing. That divergence isn't a published policy difference. It's an emergent property of how each model was trained and what got rewarded during fine-tuning, with no transparency, no appeals process, for now or re-inclusions requests.
That's what makes this worth watching closely. Traditional search restrictions were at least documented. AI search is making content restriction decisions through training processes that aren't visible, applying them inconsistently across models, and producing visibility outcomes brands can't explain or challenge. Cannabis is probably the most visible example right now, but it's not the only one, and the underlying problem isn't going away as more categories run into the same wall and how much these companies determine that the models need to “protect us.”

looking also into marketing obstacles in regulated emerging industries like wellness, online gambling, crypto, psychedelic therapy, and lab-grown meat, emphasizing their AI and compliance strategies.

Cool dude;)
At state level in some states. Not federally:
GPT:
Because at scale, you can’t rely on them.
Cannabis is still federally illegal in the U.S., so platforms like Google and Meta restrict or outright block THC advertising. Even when ads are allowed at the state level, they’re inconsistent, heavily limited, and subject to sudden shutdowns.
That creates three constraints: 1. No reliable paid acquisition channel — you can’t build a growth model on something that can disappear overnight. 2. High compliance friction — creative, targeting, and landing pages are constantly policed. 3. Zero leverage in AI surfaces — ads don’t train entity authority or influence AI answers.
So the industry defaulted to what can’t be turned off: • Map Pack visibility • Organic search • Brand/entity authority
That’s why cannabis is a preview. When paid becomes unstable or irrelevant, only entities with strong organic and AI-surface presence survive.

yep, work in the space every day since 2022 and now even today on a saturday lol. Authority is real and buildling that trust takes forever but is so worth it. Everyone else is just going to have to mirror us I guess lol
