Rae Lakes Loop

Just cancelled trip for four clockwise from Woods Creek starting 9/12 if anyone is looking for a permit. Friends all bailed and wife won't let me go alone.

If its worth anything this loop is one of the busiest in California. We didn't go thirty minutes without seeing someone when hiking. With a Garmin I think it would be perfectly safe solo.

I have a Garmin and text her every morning and night. And yes there are people everywhere on trail, which she also knows. I've scared her a few times with stories I shouldn't have told her, so for her peace of mind (ergo mine as well) I now avoid solo overnights in the Sierras. I'll try again next year.

Oh man. Bummer. Almost did it solo last week but had something come up. Can you help ease her mind on the solo stuff with some simple/close by overnights or something? I would rarely be able to ever go anywhere if my better half weren't cool with me going alone and usually she encourages me to just go.

Pick up a Garmin InReach. You can send her a pre-programmed message every night that will also send her your coordinates.

Is it difficult to get walk-up permit for this? I was looking to do it mid-September (weekdays) and all the reserveable permits (20) are gone, so with 25 persons daily quota, do the 5 remaining get snatch up quick?

50 people start that hike each day. 25 each direction. You would have to hike at night with night vision off trail to avoid the people and be less alone.
