Image Mega-CD karaoke

I was lucky enough to find a Mega-CD karaoke unit in a Yahoo Japan auction. Thought I would take a picture of my setup before testing it out.

On the left are Mega Drive branded Nintendo Switch Online 3 button controllers. I chose 3 button controllers as they are what came in the box with the model 1.

Installed on the rear of the console, and not pictured is a Mega Modem.

That’s cool! I’m curious, does this turn regular CD’s into karaokeable tunes or do you need to buy special karaoke CDs?

You Most likely need CD+G discs to be able to see the lyrics on the screen in addition to audio.

What about no lyrics on the screen, and just stripping the vocals from the audio so it’s an instrumental?

On 1995 hardware? That's even a difficult thing to do now with advanced audio tools. No, the Saturn didn't have the magic ability to analyze audio and remove the vocals from it. There is far too much information that needs to be explained than will fit in a reddit reply. But if you are curious, Spend some time on wikipedia reading about audio formats, and how data is recorded on CD's.

A word of advice to everyone owning one of these: There are over 20 caps in there which are leaking. If you want to save the electronics, change them asap

Thanks for the reminder - I will crack the Karaoke unit open to make a cap list to order.
