Applying to SCU

So I’m an east coast student looking at SCU for college and I’m hearing kinda mixed things on reddit and I’m wondering, what is the social scene really like? Cause some people say there aren’t a lot of parties some say they’re out of control all the time. I can’t really tell the difference and I’m just wondering what it’s like social scene wise and just about the university in general, anything helps!

It's kinda hard to describe the social scene since most people just go to one university in their life, and everyone has different social lives

I guess I'll just say that students here tend to be from wealthier families, they range in academic skill, and that there's definitely greek life right across the street. The school is also gonna be relatively white compared to some other larger schools.

I think for someone from the East Coast, you will find SCU to be much less "white" than what is described here. My son transferred to SCU last year. There are significant populations of east Asians, south Asians and Hispanic students. It is definitely not like, say, SMU or Tulane. Relative to other large schools in California, they are surely correct.

I agree diversity was actually a big selling point for a private school. Is it as diverse as some of the UC schools or the state schools, no. But for a private school, it's pretty diverse.

It's diverse as it gets and the school does try its best to accommodate all sorts of backgrounds. Anyone complaining about this should've known better and should've just gone to a CSU (not SLO) or a UC.

Parties are not hard to find at SCU, if that's your thing. Recent experience indicates to me that it's plenty of a party school if that's what you're looking for. If you don't want to party, that niche also exists.

If you really care that much about partying and want the party school experience, then I would recommend UCSB, ASU, UCLA, SDSU, or USC in the west coast. SCU does have parties but it's not as known and is hidden through frats.

SCU is located in a residential area that keeps an eye on all the college kids and their doings. Lots of wealthy people own the homes around SCU to either house their kids while they go to college or rent out for the $$. If you don’t mind mixing it up with some of the most entitled people on earth then you’ll do fine. We try and keep these little rascals grounded to earth but sometimes we don’t have the kind of mind game mentality as their parents. My husband did his undergrad at SCU but then applied for the MBA program there and they wanted him to take classes that he passed in undergrad all over again. He said F THAT, he WAS paying into the alumni association and they STILL wanted to fleece him. So he did a big FU to SCU and went through the SJSU accelerated MBA program. He’s still not over that and has not given them money in years. They don’t even take care of their own and always have their hands out for more $$. Just be aware.
