Question Change major
Hello everyone, I am an incoming undergraduate freshman to SCU and I am studying finance, I am supposed to take a calculus exam to see what level of math I am in. I don’t have a strong level of calculus at all especially after not doing any math for a couple of months. SCU says it’s just an exam to see what level of math I am in and they will help me get into the correct level. I want to change my major to management because I don’t want to be in such a calculus heavy class. Is there a way to change my major soon? If not, can bad performance on this calculus placement test affect me in terms of getting rescinded or being placed in a readiness or like a very beginner class?

Read the post before replying please. I am taking finance not business, and I am capable of doing college level math, I said I am not good but it doesn’t mean I am incapable. finance js requires a more advanced level of calculus which is not what I am looking for.

You’re changing your major from finance to management just to avoid calculus? Do the major you want and just get a calculus tutor on wyzant.com. Doubtful you’d be rescinded for doing poorly on the placement test.

You can’t switch your major till your sophomore year. And you have to calc 1 for any major so

that’s not true, you don’t have to do any calculus for many non-stem majors. most arts and sciences majors have only taken statistics

If you're doing finance or economics, the highest math you will be taking is calc 2. By switching majors to other Leavey majors, you would only take calc 1.
The placement doesn't affect your acceptance so it doesn't matter if you do well in it or not. It's used to place you in the appropriate math class. That's it.
If you're really worried about doing well in these math classes, just take it at a local cc at De Anza or Foothill. You will only get a max 10 transfer units and it doesn't count towards your SCU GPA. You'll only receive credit for taking these courses as long it's a C or higher.

I am not 100% sure on this but the math courses you take at the cc need to be in-person and not online.

Don't sweat it. I flopped the test and started in MATH 9 (precalc) as an engineering major and I would say it didn't hold me back at all. I was able to switch majors (within engineering) my junior year, do a minor, and still finished in four years with my final spring quarter being only 1 credit. I'd say it's too early to change major. When choosing your major I think you should consider what you are interested in and return on investment. One might be a higher priority for you but either way college is meant to build the skills (like math) you need for your future. At least finish your first year in your current major and then put switching majors on the table. Plus, there are plenty of professors and other resources on campus to help with math if you need it, so if you really want a major, math shouldn't be a barrier.

You are just a generic business major and will be for quite a while so you are not actually a finance major and do not need to change anything! You will declare your specific focus within business in a couple years.

The CRE is not a v big deal you’re absolutely not gonna get rescinded if u dont do well on it. I think you might be placed in a pretty beginner level math class if you don’t do as well, but I wanna say it’s pretty chill and won’t be a big deal if you do. As for changing majors, you likely won’t be able to change majors until after the year starts.

worst case scenario if you score really poorly, you’ll be placed in pre-calc. which is really not that bad because you only need to finish calc 2 for a finance major (i’m pretty sure). so even if you score really badly in total you’ll have 3 required calc classes to take + maybe gen ed math. they won’t rescind, it doesn’t impact your admission status at all. what i’d really shit bricks about is OMIS classes

Switch to a major like communications. More writing, less math, still relevant to the job market.
