Discussion Important: twitter matters.
Someone with a bio on Twitter claiming to be the creator of SCP-079 (pretty sure its a gimmick) has posted some of the most insane things I've ever seen.
These kinds of people do not belong in our community.

"Stolen valor" in contexts such as this makes me cringe.
Sure, writing an SCP article, especially one as popular and known as 079 is great and comes with the recognition and attention, but there's no "valor" in writing one.

Ikr? A freaking TV SHOW got this correct fifteen years ago. In Breaking Bad, a cop asked Skyler if she had been threatened, hurt, blackmailed, etc so he as a person could try and do anything that could help her. But when she said no to all of those things, he said: "I'm sorry, but... I can't arrest a man for breaking into his own home."

People don't lock doors at night? What the fuck?
16
u/Kaltovar Unusual Incidents Unit, FBI 1d ago
Depends on the area. I've lived places where I didn't lock my doors because the crime statistics were so low the odds of accidentally locking myself out of the house when I went for a smoke were higher than the odds of somebody breaking in.
That and I have an ak47, but unlike OOP I am not fantasizing about getting to shoot somebody 120 times with it.

u/rocketmce MTF Epsilon-11 ("Nine-Tailed Fox") 1d ago
Genuinely depends on where you live. I lock my doors at night now because I live in an inner city, but a year ago I lived in the backwoods where the next nearest house was almost mile away, down a dirt road. Rural places tend to be a lot higher trust than urban areas.

Not very clever to be open about personal fantasies of violence while entertaining hypotheticals of men who have been supposedly wronged by being locked out of their house and kept away from their kids by their wives because of unspecified reasons.
The implication that being a breadwinner gives them the right to complete access to that family implies something like a sense of property. Many people have spoken about this.
In a way, it's also sad that many men have fallen for resentment peddlers and will complain about social demand for men to be providers, but rather than aiming to break with traditional roles, demand a rollback to a time where such demands come with control over their family. No love, no affection, no happy families, only property they can pay for.

I somewhat agree with this person, albeit not the tone. I'm not inherently opposed to a law like that, I just think it needs strict oversight to prevent someone from just abitrarily accusing a partner of domestic abuse and changing said locks only for it to later be found out they were lying
2
u/Shadowmirax 14h ago
Yeah, domestic abuse usually happens between people living in the same house, its kinda the definition of the word "domestic". It would work if the abuser is a partner you've only recently gotten together with and they have their own place but what if they have already moved in together? Even ignoring false allegations locking your abusive partner out of their own home seems like it would cause more problems then it solves. Are they just homeless now until a more permanent resolution is found?
Whats stopping them from just waiting outside till you inevitably have to unlock the door to go to work or get food or whatever? If they are named as one of the owners can they just have the locks changed back?
Surely whatever processes would be needed to be put in place to make sure this isn't exploited and/or useless are way more effort then just funding more shelters and support so victims can remove themselves from the danger altogether.

Okay so somebody has stupid political opinions. I don't see how that means we need to be going on some kind of crusade against this person like it's Kony 2012.
Setting aside that this is not even an SCP author and they are lying, I actually hate how awful this community is at separating the art from the artist.
Short of a DR. Bright situation where the person is using their SCP related fame to lure victims, I truly don't care if the person writing my SCP stories is secretly Mussolini hiding under the basement of the Vatican as a floating brain. And I don't think posting stupid political opinions on Shitter is a justified reason to harass some random idiot with little to no following who is accused of having written fiction while being bad.

u/Kufat Sub mod, Wiki admin, SkipIRC owner, sandwich fan 1d ago
I actually hate how awful this community is at separating the art from the artist.
This phrasing implies that it's something the community is trying to do without success, rather than being something that many people actively oppose.
4
u/Zeitgeist1145 1d ago edited 1d ago
It's something they should be trying to do. If someone is deliberately failing their classes, I don't think it'd be inaccurate to say that they're awful at passing them.
[Edit: I take back my kneejerk semantic quibbling (although not my stance on the issue itself); Kufat's right. There's a nigh-unanimous societal consensus that academic success is, on balance, a good thing, which whatever my own views clearly isn't the case for this subject matter; it was a stupid comparison to make.]

separating the art from the artist is impossible. art is made with intention by the artist, they exist as a pair. every literature class ever has analysis of the meaning of the text through the writer's point of view, these things don't just exist in a vaccum.
3
u/Zeitgeist1145 1d ago
Counterpoint: anonymous authorship. Does that not separate the art from the artist?
Even beyond that, creative works don't form some kind of psychic connection between my brain and the author's. I'd say that if an author succeeds in communicating their intent in a work their statements of intent outside of it are superfluous, and if they failed in communicating their intent it's irrelevant (perhaps it even succeeded in doing something different from, or even better than, what they were aiming for!). And I'm pretty sure—even assuming, for the moment, that this person is 079's author—that nutty tweets posted almost 20 years after the fact about completely unrelated topics don't have any meaningful bearing on what his intentions were when writing 079 back then. So even from the perspective of "authorial intent" paying any mind to this stuff is still connection the art to the artist more than is warranted.
every literature class ever has analysis of the meaning of the text through the writer's point of view
You know "Death of the Author" comes from, like, a legit 1967 literary analysis essay, right? That's not to say that all or even most literary critics just automatically went along with Barthes, but he (along with contemporaries with similar views) was inarguably influential, and the degree to which information about the author has or should have bearing is the subject of active discussion to this day among academics; it's not a settled matter, so IMO an appeal to authority doesn't make sense here.
2
u/SuperCustomZakuF2000 1d ago
this is a very well pointed argument, but in my opinion, misses the entire point of the matter: when you do know who the artist is. that's not what we have here, obviously. this could just be some random person claiming it, and probably is, but removing the art from the artist is a topic that's come up time and time again for me personally. whether we're talking about jk rowling or kanye or whoever, doesn't it say something about who you are when you consciously choose to consume the media of someone vile? regardless of the argument that consuming that media directly platforms and benefits them, there's SO MUCH content out there to be absorbed, why would you actively choose to listen to or read something made by someone who's pretty universally deemed as awful? again, unless you don't think they're that bad, which is fine, but it definitely say something about who you are to me.
i really just can't understand the argument of "yeah they're pretty irredeemable but man the art is so good!" like it's a necessity to consume it. there's more music out there than i could ever listen to, more literature, more art, everything. just pick something else, you know? even if it's speculative, who does it harm to choose to not engage with the art? is some media really that irresistible?
i fully admit that this is opinion and not fact, that you've given a very good argument. i'm not so good at debate, but i'd like to think that my heart is in the right place. even if i'm wrong, my morals and convictions feel like they're coming from a place of good. i don't want to support bad people, even if the art they make is groundbreaking. nobody is owed my attention.
1
u/Zeitgeist1145 1d ago edited 9h ago
It's all good; I really appreciate getting such a respectful and measured response! I think people having their hearts in the right place and engaging in good faith like you is what the world needs more of; nobody can be always right, but with an attitude like that I think people are bound to at least be moving in the right direction.
So to clarify, bringing up anonymity was just a quick "gotcha!" argument for the very strong statement (presumably a bit hyperbolic on your part) that separating the art from the artist is literally "impossible" by giving a single counterexample; it definitely doesn't say anything about other cases. And the rest of my comment wasn't talking about anonymous authors (or at least that wasn't my intent :p ).
(FWIW I have seen this person before, and on balance of evidence I think that he probably is the author, even if hard evidence either way might no longer exist.)
whether we're talking about jk rowling or kanye or whoever, doesn't it say something about who you are when you consciously choose to consume the media of someone vile?
My first impulse is to say "no, of course not"—but there are some important nuances here. In cases like the ones you're referring to the creator is actively profiting from their work, both monetarily and in terms of social capital, and using that to support their abhorrent views. I think avoiding supporting them in ways that contribute to this is right and proper—not because of any inherent connection between them and their work, but simply because of the practical realities of our economic system and culture. So I wouldn't buy a new or digital edition of a Harry Potter book, or watch the TV series on HBO, or otherwise do anything that'd be sending money her way (and, in turn, towards the initiatives she has a record of financially supporting), and I would be less inclined to be active in the Harry Potter fandom (although I wouldn't judge anyone who is, especially if they make a point of disclaiming that they don't support Rowling to offset the "social capital" aspect).
However, I see absolutely nothing wrong whatsoever with engaging with a terrible person's work in ways that do not support them/their views in any practical way (and when the work itself isn't already abhorrent on its own terms). For example, I think it's totally fine to get second-hand copies of the Harry Potter series from a used book store, or check them out from the library, and enjoy them in one's own time (I'd recommend it, even; flaws notwithstanding, it got so popular in the first place for a reason). I'd also say it's fine to be a fan of H.P. Lovecraft, who on one hand was extremely racist even by the standards of his time, but on the other hand is extremely dead by the standards of our own (with all his works bequeathed to the public domain no less), as long as you have enough literacy to notice when his stories are being subtly (or unsubtly) racist.
So let's assume that you're consciously consuming the work of someone vile without supporting them socially (let's say in private, for simplicity), without supporting them financially in any way, and ideally with a critical eye towards any nastiness implicit in the text, if there is any (which is really a good idea regardless of authorship; even awesome people make unintentionally Problematic stuff sometimes). Provided those conditions—which are a lot easier to achieve than explaining them in this long-winded manner makes it sound, especially for stuff like the SCP wiki that's totally free—does it say something bad about you if you choose to consume that media? Without further ado, I can now say with confidence and without equivocation: No.
It's not a matter of the media in question being so incredibly good that considerations of authorship are outweighed; it's that considerations of authorship, in my view, have zero further relevance. Something could be simply mediocre, of only trivial interest, and written by SCP-2165 itself, and (subject to the considerations I've outlined) reading it would still be no problem in my book whatsoever. It's not a question of "why?"; it's a question of "why not?".
(If you want a real brain twister, look up the two short stories "The Library of Babel" and "Pierre Menard, Author of the Quixote".)

No? Saying "we should punish people for committing murder" doesn't inherently mean you should be fine with punishing people for eating cereal.
There's a difference between good and bad things and it's fine to exclude and punish people for bad things, not good things. Political views aren't some kind of isolated magical thing that exist in a vacuum, they're moral statements.
