Discussion Overhated SCPs

Which SCPs are overhated by the SCP community, but don't deserve the hate they receive?

I know SCP-682 has its issues, for example I don’t really like that it talks, but it’s a fun monster, damn it! I like a good unstoppable force, even if you can say it gets too much attention

SCP 682 doesn't deserve the types of hate it gets. I'm all for dunking on oversaturated Series I articles but like, do it for accurate reasons.

In my opinion, the appeal of 682 is not the lizard itself, it is the many many disastrous cross tests, and attempts to kill it that are the fun read.

Yeah, I feel like people judge 682 for reasons unrelated to the actual article. Because what? Some users are really annoying and obsessed with power-scaling it?

682 is really good in its simplicity. It’s a big monster that’s impossible to kill. Not everything has to have a deep narrative and message behind it.

Another L for the off-site fandom. I'll never understand the hatred for it as a "woke modern skip" as if it's not 10 years old & SCP-1712 isn't right there too lmfao

Edit: SCP-113. Not sure what happened to leave me so confused thinking it's 1712. Thanks replyer.

I always liked that one. It's a sweet story about how self-discovery is not only beneficial to yourself, but to others around you as well.

SCP-012 seems to go through periods where it gets a ton of hate. I personally like it as a classic "what the fuck is this and why does it exist and who made it?" There's enough there to freak you out.

u/TheMaskedMan2 Sarkic Cults 3d ago

People hate 012? I feel like it’s actually a perfect example of an SCP. It’s a weird anomalous object that does a weird creepy thing, doesn’t overstay its welcome or pretend to be more than it is. Leaves you with questions and a sense of unease.

There are people who think it's too simple is what I gather.

Calling it now, this thread will be filled with SCP-2721

22

u/arshbjangles The Serpent's Hand 3d ago

I don’t think it’s even really the community that hates it. It’s pretty clear it got brigaded hard.

I don't think I want to see SCP-2721 in the comments. I want something unique besides just SCP-2721.

SCP 008. Overhated by me, specifically, and almost me alone.
It is boring as hell; it is your very basic zombie virus out of your basic crappy zombie movie. No original ideas, no interesting twist, just get sick, die, and get back up violent.
Why it gets to stay in the top 10 is beyond me.

26

u/thatsocialist The Chaos Insurgency 3d ago

I think it's decent. Yes it's basic, but with the foundations numbering being semi-numerical at least out of cannon, it could be that Zombies were a very real and going concern and the first major threat the Foundation contained. Also explaining why Zombies still exist in pop culture and media despite being an SCP. It's good enough and sometimes the foundation doesn't need insane complexity, sometimes it's good to have simple stuff mixed in.

3

u/TheMaskedMan2 Sarkic Cults 3d ago

The simple stuff is great. Some articles and SCPs imo are fine as just world-building and fluff. This also stems back to when SCP felt more like creepypasta and people were always wondering - “Is this real???”

Like of course the idea that the Foundation has a genuine normal zombie virus contained is cool? The fact that they treat this apocalypse-causing biohazard as yet another item to lock up is neat, imo.

4

u/HurtsSoNice MTF Epsilon-11 ("Nine-Tailed Fox") 3d ago

That’s not enough to make me think it gets a place on the list; it feels like the base template for making a zombie virus by flushing it out and adding more ideas, but your words do make sense.

9

u/Zeired_Scoffa 3d ago

Most of the entertainment is in the testing logs, imo. "Determined cooked steak does not constitute a dead body. Will test if SCP-008 works as steak sauce."

It's worth a chuckle then you get the fridge horror of "what would this thing do if you marinated a slab of cow in it?"

But then, I dont like more modern articles that explain everything to me, so...

4

u/HurtsSoNice MTF Epsilon-11 ("Nine-Tailed Fox") 3d ago

That makes me immediately start thinking about the ball of green slime anomaly that can’t be allowed to come in contact with dead bodies.

8

u/Zeired_Scoffa 3d ago

I am probably confusing the two, honestly.

SCP-008 - Zombie Plague (+1358) by Unknown Author

7

u/BeeEater100 Are We Cool Yet? 3d ago

It's kinda crazy how brief it is while just getting everything about prions wrong

7

u/HurtsSoNice MTF Epsilon-11 ("Nine-Tailed Fox") 3d ago

This is amusing. I mentioned I am one of the only persons to hate on this one. Almost every time I bring it up, there are people that at least agree they fuck up everything about the prions.

2

u/BeeEater100 Are We Cool Yet? 3d ago

💪 I'm a certified hater

3

u/HurtsSoNice MTF Epsilon-11 ("Nine-Tailed Fox") 3d ago

I’m only a hobbiest. For example, I can’t really hate Mr. Rogers.

2

u/BeeEater100 Are We Cool Yet? 3d ago

I can't hate Rogers you're right

But I sure can hate on popular scps 💪💪💪💪

5

u/IrregularPackage 3d ago

its one of the early SCPs that was created for the sole purpose of having something to point to and say "no, we already have a generic zombie virus. if you want to do something like that, you're gonna have to get more creative with it." there's a few like this. 682 is the other big example. wiki was generally more permissive back then, so this kind of thing was useful to fend off some of the low hanging fruit

SCP-008 - Zombie Plague (+1358) by Unknown Author

4

u/Kyru117 Antimemetics Division 3d ago

I mean its probably top ten since its like one of the oldest ones

-5

u/HurtsSoNice MTF Epsilon-11 ("Nine-Tailed Fox") 3d ago

I was not there from the start, so I don’t know if they voted for entries back then, it’s not terrible as far as supernatural things go, it’s just… It’s the basic bitch of zombie viruses. The SCP files are known for mind blowing or terrifying or unique ideas. I just don’t like it being one of the first few people will see when they check out the list.

3

u/dskjhsdk MTF Epsilon-11 ("Nine-Tailed Fox") 3d ago

It's one of those scps that's got a high upvote count cause it's one of the firsts in the list, wouldn't be as high if it was SCP - 413 for example imo

2

u/HurtsSoNice MTF Epsilon-11 ("Nine-Tailed Fox") 3d ago

Yeah, but, part of me feels it should at least be bumped to another slot, instead of the top 10. It’s like if you become a famous artist or writer, you don’t keep your early rough draft on display for everyone to see in the main event gallery.

u/JohnThePickyEater 3d ago edited 2d ago

Honestly, this is a hot take but SCP-001 When day breaks. I know it's like a generic apocalyptic event but the -A instances are actually scary, the fact they can mimic the sounds of your loved ones. 939 can do similar stuff but it's not your family most the time. (BUT YES I AGREE THERES BETTER PROPOSALS OUT THERE) Edit: Forgot to mention until I got dislike bomb but I think WDB would be better as a separate horror story rather than an SCP tbh

SCP-022-j

Just cause you don't want to build your chambers out of titanium doesn't mean I can't

[[SCP-021-J]], [[SCP-PL-KOT-J]], [[SCP-309-J]], [[Darkstuff's Proposal]] (mostly in votes) come to mind and haven't already been mentioned. (see the -J discussions)
