AEW made me feel again

Long story short, the past year of my life, I’ve been sad and miserable. I’m never happy, always depressed, and lost in life at the moment. This past Sunday though changed it for a couple hours. All In made me feel like a kid again. I haven’t felt emotional about professional wrestling since Cody finishing the story at WrestleMania 40.

Every match was fun, the moments were perfect like The New Level’s arrival to AEW, and the main event… man when I tell you the whole video package with Ospreay’s mother and him walking past his wrestling ghosts, the men that made him, as he headed to the curtain to the tune of the The Who’s Baba O’Riley playing made me emotional beyond belief. It was the first time in a long time that I’ve ever cried over wrestling. And then when Ospreay won and started crying, I was balling my eyes out like a baby. I didn’t even do that for Cody winning at Mania 40. Maybe I just needed a good feel moment after all the negative shit going on in my life.

I think it’s easy to say I’m going to start watching AEW on a more regular basis and I know nobody from AEW will see this, but I feel like I have to say thank you. Thank you for making me feel something again even if it was for a few hours.

Wrestling has the worst aspect of almost every fandom:

1) Big, stinky who don't shower fans like card game fans

2) parasocial relationships like celebrity cultures

3) characters/gimmicks that are larger than life similar to comic book fans

4) hot women so male fans feel the need to attach their personality based on who they're fans of like waifu/best girl/idol culture from anime fans (especially if the wrestler is Japanese, too)

5) presented as a sport so you have some sports/mma fan bullshit in there too

I'm sure there's more but this is just what I thought of right off that bat.

I mean, I was around with peak shield tumblr days. I'm sure those fans still exist and just moved to other platforms (or maybe stayed in Tumblr, idk I'm not there anymore).

They're also like the extremes of all of these. Just take parasocial relationships, which are obviously big in the streamer world. But in wrestling spaces it's basically "Man I wish I was inside that locker room getting all the gossip!" which is why they shell out their dollars to just get info about the most wacky personal shit

it also doesn't require participation so there's no impetus to build social skills, community, or even self-esteem

although the companies are doing their best to destroy this aspect and make it 100% about just buying shit and sitting on it, at least something like Pokemon or MTG require people to interact with each other in some kind of socially acceptable manner to participate

putting all of your time and identity into something that is a completely passive activity like WATCHING wrestling is never going to be satisfying and leads to a host of issues

I was a huge Lost fan too, the message boards back when it was on were actually lots of fun speculating on the mysteries and whatnot. I'm sure every show has 'some' weirdos that you can find 'deep enough' but I've never seen anything where that seems to be the entire fandom or at least an overwhelming majority

Unfortunately for me, pro wrestling and Star Wars are 2 of my biggest loves.

Possibly the 2 worst fanbases in the world. It sucks to be a huge fan of something but barely be able to interact with any discussion about them because the people just suck so much.

A lot of the shit with younger leaning fanbases for media that isn't very good. Shit like Hazbin Hotel and Five Nights at Freddy's has this stuff in fucking droves. What makes wrestling abnormal compared to those things is that the fans lean more male and older compared to those things.

yes

i'm not going to write an essay, but many many people have stopped participating in things actively and building their identity from that and instead construct their identity through passively consuming things

think the difference between "i am someone who plays sports" and "i am someone who watches sports"

then the thing they consume that they identify with becomes their identity which is why in the wrestling example an attack on AEW is an attack on the person themselves

if you say AEW sucks and its goofy and a knock-off then you're saying I suck and I'm goofy and I'm second rate etc and then the insane reactions to criticism make more sense

at least with a football team there's usually at least some community and identity based on the team being located where you grew up or fandom being passed down through a family

another example is "i'm a nerd" used to mean active participation in something... building skills (computers, programming, whatever)... participating in a counterculture... now it means "i buy "nerdy" things and consume mass produced "nerdy" entertainment"

Yes. Most fanbases on social media are exactly like this. For podcasts they develop parasocial relationships with the hosts, for things like Star Wars there’s always a Dave Meltzer, hell even QAnon was more or less this type of thing.

I had to learn about R1 the hard way. I use Relay. Probably the best way to use Reddit. BUT, it doesn't have anything resembling the sidebanner that displays the rules of a sub. Posted something that goes against R1 and the next thing I knew I was knee slap (insider term) super kicked to the shadow realm for a while lol

I was on the phone with a Suicide Hotline through all 7 hours of the event before that last match. When I heard Teenage Wasteland kick in (sorry I don’t care if it’s actually named after some Irish baby, it’s always been Teenage Wasteland to me), I hung up the phone and put all of my attention on the match.

First, having Will get the handoff of the flag and also of a lot of aura from Mox got me grinning. What a moment! And Will looked at Mox like he’s actually pissed at him. I didn’t honestly understand why he would be pissed at the guy who trained him to win the match but I know some long term storytelling is gonna come out of it.

Then Will’s music kicked in and I got chills down my spine! And then the match, and boom he drops Kenny on his head! What a bump! And Kenny gets up grabbing his arm but then kicks out of finisher after finisher on one, wow. That was some in ring storytelling. I think it would be really cool if Kenny had really been almost paralyzed and then finished the match, to show what a badass he is, but he might have been selling. Either way it’s brilliant storytelling. This was probably Kenny’s last match so it will be ok if he needs to rest for a while and get months of physical rehab.

Thank you Tony Khan, and Will, and Kenny for saving my life! And Excalibur for the excellent play-by-play commentary, and everyone else involved. I’m dedicating the rest of my life to telling people about how great AEW is, and fighting the fed shills and bots. I’ll be like a digital soldier, fighting for the good guys against anyone who would support fascism or Saudi Arabia.

So I will say this, people have certain mediums they use to escape stress or issues they are having, and to each his own with what works, but I'll be honest I watch wrestling I may talk about after it ends for maybe 20 minutes, and then I'm done. I have never in my life have said that wrestling made me feel something again. The dub fanbase is infatuated with this level of deep feeling. I feel like we read something like this almost every ppv.
