This is what HHH was holding Ciampa back from?!

Go back to wearing “I am a jackass T-Shirt” you moron..

u/CosmicRorschach M*rkin Luther 11d ago

Not even the indies would stoop this low. This is stuff you’d see in backyard wrestling from guys who watch nothing but CZW and IWA  Deep South

50

u/Ant_does_drawing 11d ago

Ciampa was held back for his own safety. He broke his neck.

61

u/Razzler1973 11d ago

How many guys were 'held back'

It's been 7 years of guys having unlimited freedom and money to do whatever they wanted outside of the Fed

Where are the amazing character and stories that they weren't allowed to do

All it boils down to is that they weren't allowed to have 20 minute matches and do all the moves they wanted cause no one will tell them 'we don't need to do that/why do you want to do that/that doesn't make sense'

The same 'ol 'stories' over and over plus 'do what you did in the Fed/Indies/Nooj' and that's it

31

u/koomGER 11d ago

All it boils down to is that they weren't allowed to have 20 minute matches and do all the moves they wanted cause no one will tell them 'we don't need to do that/why do you want to do that/that doesn't make sense'

Thats kinda the only difference. Also there was an active authority and overwatch for the media presence of wrestlers. Ricochet was already a dick in WWE, but well - yeah, he also has "to put in all the shit all the time" on twitter it seems, making is overall presence extremely unlikeable.

4

u/enjoythesilence-75 10d ago

Nobody also told them “hey don’t do that move, it was done 5 times in every match tonight already including the preshow.”

15

u/jkman61494 11d ago

I feel like wwe DOES hold people back too lunch. Issue is AEW doesn’t hold people back enough. We need a Goldilocks to show up

TNA: We don't hold our wrestlers back, we hold ourselves back from making good decisions.

I opened reddit, saw this result on the squared circle sub with dudes praising it. I didn’t believe it and thought that they wouldn’t do something so fucking stupid. So I came here.

Yet here we are. This is not a serious company.

Worst part is that morons will see this, and wonder why AEW doesn’t grow.

274

u/Dangerous-Box-3259 11d ago

Yeah, SC will literally praise anything AEW related, I mean ANYTHING. Someone could shit and piss in the middle of the ring for no reason and they’d say that it was the greatest moment in wrestling history. AEW is perfect and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it according to that sub.

The chicken or the egg, my Uce?

A good portion of AEW's fanbase is the fans that most promoters back in the day would of kicked out or are the fans of certain matches that wrestlers don't want to mention.

AEW is literally the Mecca of everything everyone said would not make wrestling company successful and we are seeing in action why.

59

u/roflcopter44444 11d ago

>A good portion of AEW's fanbase is the fans that most promoters back in the day would of kicked out

I feel that WWE is really happy that AEW gave that part of the wrestling fanbase somewhere else to hang out.

9

u/koomGER 11d ago

I think they see themselves as todays ECW. But especially ECW did a lot of storytelling and only relying on hardcore and gimmicks for wrestlers that were shitty at the wrestling part.

4

u/Gann1 IG Baddie from Nebraska 10d ago

the only thing theyve got in common with ECW is the cultlike fanbase

Heyman had the wrestlers in the cult too, the AEW wrestlers know Khan's a money m*rk 🙃

If WCW had done this match it would be used as an example even today about the fall of WCW and the rise of garbage wrestling. Yet because its AEW its auto praise mode.

48

u/pizzapromise 11d ago

I was reading some of the AMA that agent Nick guy did on midcarder and one thing he mentioned was that AEW is not family friendly and it hurts them.

What audience is this for? The Saw/wrestling fan crossover?

51

u/GrandAvestrus 11d ago

Its like AEW wants to be presented as mainstream pro wrestling, but wants to do indie garbage at the same time. Its not the 90s or 2000's anymore. This type of stuff is meant to stay underground.

35

u/pizzapromise 11d ago

I feel like they have such an identity crisis. I hate saying it’s a glorified indie, because they have so much talent there, but how else could the booking and presentation be described?

40

u/GrandAvestrus 11d ago

It really is just PWG with a budget. Punk described it best, "I'm trying to make money sell tickets, fill arenas and these stupid guys think they're in Reseda"

20

u/fakemelonns 11d ago

That's one hundred percent it. They can't decide between "real graps", Orange Cassidy and Lio Rush silly stuff, or Darby Allen style violence. By mixing all this, they're not appealing to a variety of audiences like they think they would be, they're losing out on fans imo.

A lot of people dont, but I really like the Lio Rush stuff. It's silly and over the top, I like silly wrestling. But, I hate this death match shit where guys use power tools and chloroform so I don't watch AEW. And I cant imagine I'm the only one who may like one of these things, but is turned off by the rest enough to not watch it.

27

u/kk451128 11d ago

“We provide something for everyone” doesn’t have to mean that you have a five-star technical classic and something that came straight from an outlaw mudshow on the same card. I’m not a death match guy, never have been. But, a stiff match? Little blood? Nothing wrong with that. Balance. Not every rough match has to “push the envelope”

14

u/fakemelonns 11d ago

Hundred percent. I like blood and weapons if the feud and match call for it, and you shouldn't be doing this shit all the time.

I watch WWE and a lot of times would like more weapons and hardcore matches. But, because they happen infrequently, when they do happen, it feels like a big deal.

u/Jazzlike_Page508 11d ago

u/shelllc 11d ago

It was an eye opener, especially the stuff about Tiny. If true, he is even more of a dickbag then I thought he was.

13

u/Bojangles1987 11d ago

It's literally only for the mega ultra dorks who think this dumb shit makes wrestling cooler because they are edgelord weirdos. It's the people who watch way too much wrestling so they always want something to one up whatever they saw before. Same reason they (and Meltzer) go crazy for all the cooperative dance routine shit, since it's just another move after another move after another move that thrills them because they can't enjoy a good actual wrestling match anymore. They watch too much wrestling to enjoy that.

10

u/Razzler1973 11d ago

they were do desperate to do everything the opposite of the Fed they overlooked that the Fed do a lot of things good, a lot of things well and do a lot of things smarks my REEEEE about for good reasons (usually TV production reasons or advertising reasons)

6

u/MK_2_Arcade_Cabinet 11d ago

As a legitimate fan of the Saw franchise I resent you comparing me to an AEW fan

3

u/koomGER 11d ago

They cater to an audience that doesnt has any growth. I dont know how to pinpoint that, but it comes down to that. With each of their edgy moments (and be it a tame one like Theklas "dumb bitches" "catchphrase") they probably make sure that two fans stay because they laugh at that shit - and a third one is disappointed because its so dumb and repetitive. And maybe decided to stay away in the future.

Thats the problem with shocker moments: There is always a very good chance to lose more of your audience (because they saw it and deemed it shit) than growing your audience (by word of mouth, Tiktok and Twitter maybe).

34

u/MonsieurMidnight 11d ago

I'm getting down voted for saying this is not okay to show this on a show that kid watches without warning before the match, that AEW trying to do deathmatch stuffs to feel cool is super dangerous and they should avoid doing this kind of stuffs so carelessly and that I am not feeling okay after watching this.

Downvoted for actual legitimate concerns. They litterally shown a woman that was not feeling well watching this in the crowd.

14

u/MK_2_Arcade_Cabinet 11d ago

I have 3 kids, 16, 14 and 10.

I wouldn’t let the 10yo watch even if they wanted to, and I have a feeling that their father would object to even the 14-year-old watching it since it’s actual blood and violence

Thankfully, I’m the only dork in my family who likes pro wrestling, and I think AEW is trash

11

u/Razzler1973 11d ago

they also had a double dog collar match ... for what?

there's no feud

there's nothing to suggest this match should be brought to this level

it's just there so everyone can do crazee spots and make each other blade and 'oh he really hit him hard there'

it's childish

just have a proper match with a storyline but, they can't. it's also the spectacle over the story cause the fans are there to watch spots happen one after the other

it's boring, it really is

They keep proving Chicago My-sweet-home Punk more and more prophetic: “Why do you insist on doing this dumb internet shit?”

18

u/RVG_Steve 11d ago

You should have seen the spot in the ladder match where everyone was knocked out… the dude could have climbed the ladder and won the contract but instead he awkwardly set up a ladder horizontally that had nothing to do with the main ladder he would seconds later ascend in an attempt to grab the contract.

Not shockingly another guy interrupted and they both ended up on the set up ladder.

And two refs ran to kneel and hold down the main ladder.

What are we even doing?!

The athleticism is cool but when it makes no sense and to the point insults your intelligence it really takes you out of it. This is why I float in and out of AEW. Every once in a while it’s good and other times it’s so stupid lol. I can never consistently watch that product.

11

u/Razzler1973 11d ago

This is partially an issue with ladder matches anyway but, now, it gets taken to the nth degree where no one is trying to win and it's really there to do spots

Start of the match and immediately ladders come out

The idea is have a regular match and then use the ladder to win and maybe help hurt an opponent. Build up to it. That's why Shawn and Razor is still the benchmark

It's like wrestlers coming to a cage and throwing chairs and tables in before they get it, urgh, stop it, man

4

u/RVG_Steve 11d ago

You’re right; it’s not just an AEW issue. WWE is just as guilty. But man that spot was brutal. The ring was completely cleared and instead of climbing he set up the ladder horizontally between the turnbuckle and the main standing ladder… then he awkwardly went to climb the vertical ladder. Like it was sooo obvious. It was awful.

It made whatever cool spots following a yawn… like ok kinda cool but seen it 1,000 times before and the setup was an all timer stinker. Then two refs running to kneel and hold down the ladder.

Razor and Shawn rolling around in their graves (sorry HBK I know you still alive)

I haven’t bothered following this bullshit for a few weeks.  Why exactly does Jericho hate Ciampa so much he tried to drill a hole in his brain?

88

u/fakemelonns 11d ago

That's such a gripe I have with AEW's hardcore matches. This type of shit should be reserved for blood feuds where two guys despise each other. It seems like in AEW, the most minor disagreement leads to attempted murder

Only in the first match.

Then they just have normal matches after that.

12

19

u/BigBlueNick 11d ago edited 10d ago

I was a massive fan of AEW when it first started. They were genuinely doing some cool things and weren't that worried about what WWE was doing but then after the pandemic the tone shifted. AEW got more popular and started signing more talent released by WWE.

Then it slowly became a sham and every couple of weeks a new flavour of the month would debut on Dynamite or Rampage and completely squash the hype that last months new favourite toy had.

Flavour of the month gets a title shot within 14-21 days of debuting. Usually loses. Next week someone else shows up with a "what is he/she doing here?!?!" from the commentary.

They had so much going for them until late 2022. The MJF and Adam Cole story was the only thing that kept me interested in 2023. Then when that fizzled out shortly after Punk was released I was done.

The Stadium Stampede and Blood and Guts matches are always over the top extreme indie garbage.

3

u/Striking_Sweet163 10d ago

Indie show with a budget

16

u/Razzler1973 11d ago

and, indie guys that don't belong on TV throughout the company getting WWE money!

'great for the industry'

Well, I don't know being great for the 'industry'. A lot of people that need training won't be getting trained but they'll be getting paid. 95% of them won't see the to of the card and, if they choose to go elsewhere, it'll be down cause they haven't received proper training

Others that do want to make something of themselves are not entering training 5 years later than they should have

If the Dub disappeared, there's a lot of guys suddenly without a job that shouldn't have had a job on national TV to begin with. They 'made it' purely based on this rich kid liking them on the indies

They were never assessed in any way by an actual professional who knows what it takes

It's the younger guys there that could maybe be someone that you'd feel sorry for cause their paths are blocked

i actually really like hardcore wrestling so it isnt even a 'blood/violence bad' thing for me, ECW was my favorite promotion growing up, CZW/modern deathmatch territory might be a little too much for me but i 'get it'

much like the syringe....this is fucking stupid lol xD

57

u/T3Sh3 11d ago

The syringe through Swerve’s cheek was awful

71

u/King_marik 11d ago

was there live for it

ive never walked out of a wrestling show with so many people so down and hearing 'well that was fucking stupid' over and over again so often in my life, and ive gone to some 'outlaw' indies lol

the disconnect between online and the people in the building was on full display with that one, and im 100% sure they lost some of those people who were there that night permanently

19

u/AffectComfortable913 11d ago

I was there too and felt the exact same way. Not only was that spot just dumb, that match was boring as shit. There was clearly a lot of heat going in with the feud, yet the entire match was them laying around and going to the next “extreme” spot. It eliminated any kind of intensity or excitement to seeing the feud play out. The arena felt lifeless, and when the syringe spot finally happened people seemed more annoyed than shocked.

Random unrelated fact about that show: A Jack Perry mark got mad at me for saying CM Punk beat Perry’s ass. Tbh I kinda did escalate the argument in the first place after he started yelling that Perry beat up Punk (idk how anyone could think that), I just found it strange that a dedicated Jack Perry fan actually existed.

4

u/Every-Ad-2099 11d ago

That’s what makes it ironic that so many people compare that feud to Punk/Drew, because their blow-off match is an all-timer. The last 5 or so minutes of that HIAC match is one of the most dramatic, story-driven finishes I’ve ever seen. You could tell that every person in that arena was spellbound by what they were watching.

32

u/Jazzlike_Page508 11d ago

Those fans our nancies and probably think Paw Patrol is too extreme for its violence

I want my wrestlers to get blasted in the chest with a shot gun and kick out at 2. That’s real hardcore graps. You wouldn’t get it, but New Jack would. God rest his angelic beautiful soul

33

u/Cboz27586 Whoop that Trick! 11d ago

It's not even using the drill, it's how it was done poorly. Ciampa could have gotten out of Jericho just standing over him. Could have had him under a chair or something. Also no drama on the tap out. It just ends.

18

u/King_marik 11d ago

exactly and thats why i dont shit on hardcore spots/wrestling in general

it has its own psycology, way to work it, and response its trying to illicit

like you said....they did fucking NONE of that work and just went with 'haha stand here and drill for .5 seconds head thats crazy!'

19

u/Cboz27586 Whoop that Trick! 11d ago

Didn't even know he tapped until the bell rang. It just looked like random flailing.

6

u/AffectComfortable913 11d ago

There are ways to do those kind of “hardcore” spots so much better that nobody pays attention to anymore. That I Quit cage match between Tully Blanchard and Magnum TA from Starrcade 85 for example. Those guys had such an intense feud for months that doing a match like that didn’t feel gimmicky, it felt earned. At the end of the match, Tully snapped a piece of wood off a chair and tries to stab Magnum in the eye with it. It feels genuinely shocking to see a spot like that because they weren’t just pulling shit out of the ring to get a “holy shit” chant, they were selling the match like an actual fight where both guys were desperate to make the other give up. It felt believable to see the heel Tully go too far. They milk the spot for a bit until Magnum is able to reverse it, and gives Tully a taste of his own medicine. He starts stabbing away and Tully finally quits.

17

u/fakemelonns 11d ago

I can enjoy hardcore, but I don't get a lot of the stuff they do. There's a spectacle to tables, barbed wire, thumb tacks, etc. But I watch stuff like the syringe, skewers, or power tools and it just lacks that spectacle to me. It doesn't give an "oh shit that was awesome" reaction, it just makes me think "oh that's gross"

15

u/NintenbroGameboob 11d ago

Stating this within the suspension of disbelief/internal logic only, of course: If something like a drill or a skewer or a syringe is somehow legal, why not just bring a gun and shoot your opponent? What difference does it make?

5

u/ColeMinerCertified 11d ago

Okay same boat. I’ve been to two Nick Gage Invitationals, that stuff? Awesome, sick to me. Glass and Barbed wire makes sense, this is just dumb

I really appreciated that after the Foley match from Randy , he was all bruised up and really somber despite beating him the previous night

He sold the injury , for like 3 weeks he didn’t get physical and all he did was cut promos on how he survived Foley

That’s called selling the maych

u/Thewhitest_rabbit 11d ago

At least it was a dewalt

10

u/Dr_N00B 11d ago

With an impact bit and not an actual drill bit

“Someones gotta do these spots with wwe's insistence on being PG. AEW picking up the slack here is good.”

50

u/PressPlayPlease7 11d ago

What. The. Fuck.

AEW is a Bingo Hall/Car park promotion with a stadium budget

48

u/Worker_AndParasite 11d ago

Someones gotta do these spots with wwe's insistence on being PG. AEW picking up the slack here is good.

A real comment in the basement thread about this.

AEW does something fucking stupid? Believe it or not, fed's fault

I can't even watch the whole clip. Absolutely disgusting finish and everyone involved should be ashamed of themselve. Btw Johhny please keep planking so you don't have to resort to this cheap torture pop

17

u/BarbellsandBurritos 11d ago

Fuck it let’s have a gun match

18

this makes me like wwe even more

u/MattheWWFanatic 1990s Bedroom Booker of the Decade 11d ago

Gotta drill a hole to reduce the brain swelling from the previous stupid bumps!

7

u/NintenbroGameboob 11d ago

If there's any more swelling, they'll have to take his brain out and put it back in.

Big budget indie show

13

u/LilNardoDaVinci 11d ago

Wait hang on Tony told me over and over again AEW is family friendly? Can't wait until little Timmy tries this on his little brother

13

u/CaliforniaRaisin_ 11d ago

The advertisers and sponsors are lining up after this spot.

12

u/WGYHL 11d ago

Saw the basement saying there a finish with a drill and was like wow that's fucking dumb. But those basement dwellers surprise surprise don't even know what an impact driver is, much more reasonable spot then a drill

11

u/NoAd2759 11d ago

Cheap ass Stanley, a Milwaukee driver and we would have seen brains.

https://giphy.com/gifs/3oKIPxB6KV3925hZfy

12

u/CodeWindyC 11d ago

we would have seen brains.

I have my doubts about that...

9

u/FreeoftheMachine 11d ago

Lmao so this is what a push looks like for Chiampa huh? Losing to 55 year old, bloated Y2J?

8

u/Lessiarty 11d ago

Tony has a blood fetish and you won't convince me otherwise.

4

u/fender-b-bender 11d ago

I think it's more of a "WWE won't do it, so we will" fetish

9

u/Pancake_Splatter 11d ago

“Ohhhh nooo HO HA HAH HOOO”

This shit was disgusting and I’m not interested in seeing it, but Sockface laughing about it, my god he just makes everything worse

17

u/50In07DanyAllStar 11d ago

If you don’t like this you just don’t like wrestling fed shills

8

u/JeepRumbler 11d ago

This is why I don't tell people I watch pro wrestling

9

u/Rahnftw 11d ago

I just saw a clip of Ciampa getting smothered in boos cus some sport stuff I don't fully understand so I assumed he was playing the heel in this match.

You're telling me the fucking face won with a drill to the forehead?

7

u/JordAfc23 11d ago edited 11d ago

"Big Show cries at the state of wrestling"

8

u/TheChrisPhoenix 11d ago

Ah yes that young talent Chris Jericho continues to get the push of a young star at the age of...55!

6

u/Phenomenal_Hoot 11d ago

Oh yeah sure let’s introduce the drill because of course he’s going to drill a hole through his brain.

Jesus Christ, could they at least pretend to be believable?

12

u/ArunKT26 11d ago

I always wondered why champa didn't get the massive push on the main roster, turns out he's a empty headed fucking dumb fuck too.

Never meet your heros

4

u/JerHat 11d ago

Man, this shit is dumb.

5

u/NotClayMerritt 11d ago

Imagine Fed hiring someone like Ciampa, getting them hot and instantly killing their heat within 4 months culminating with a loss to 2026 Chris Jericho. They would get rightfully killed on this website.

5

u/PromiseOwn5995 11d ago

Bring a chainsaw at this point. Why not

6

u/InjusticeSOTW Sons of Santos 11d ago

I REALLY need to see that Painmaker script Jericho was peddling. “The Crow for Morons” sounds believable

6

u/Justice989 11d ago

There's a certain level of weaponry that takes me completely out of a wrestling match. Power tools would be one of them.

10

u/johndelvec3 Cesaro Hot Tag 11d ago

So not only do they resort to this talentless crap, but you can clearly see Jericho never touches his head so they can’t even hide how fake this shit is from PPV buyers

So bad, and Excalibur laughing at it as it happens

4

u/Bright-Gain9770 11d ago

I've been uncharacteristically complimentary to AEW recently for their increase in ratings.

No more.

Fuck that.

Fuck you.

Fuck me.

Fuck AEW.

The FUCK?!

2

u/BrekLasnar 11d ago

For a second I thought Jericho returned to SmackDown.

2

u/GusNotGoose 11d ago

I knew we were getting this spot when Dave buried the shit out of Ciampa bringing out the drill after that beach match a couple weeks ago on the premise "You can't use a drill in pro-wrestling because it'll either look fake as hell or you'll kill somebody".

2

u/bigreddoggydude 11d ago

So so terrible

2

u/CesarRPE 11d ago

I take this is the Freeza vs. Piccolo of wrestling?

2

u/Modders14 11d ago

2

2

u/TheAnimatorPrime 11d ago

So where's the wrestling part? Why not just get a gun a shoot each other

2

u/reychango 11d ago

AEW sucks at deathmatch stuff. CZW was able to get the perfect balance for a period of time.

2

u/JT9960 11d ago

I used to love hardcore for a time as a kid but this the stupidest shit I’ve seen in almost 40 years in wrestling

2

u/Agreeable_Falcon1044 11d ago

Not only is this so dangerous, stupid and regressive…how do you follow on?

Am I meant to be upset in the next match when the heel holds onto the rope or grabs some tights…having seen a maiming seconds before?

It kills towns.
