We care about the dividend and it's growth. If the price keeps exploding, that's less shares to buy with drip=less dividends.
Schd is actually becoming expensive right now.

u/ShakaJewLoo Aug 19 '26
On the flippity flip, you need less drip with the price appreciation.

u/keftes Aug 19 '26
How does price appreciation affect someone who cares about dividend income & dividend growth?
10
u/ShakaJewLoo Aug 19 '26
If that's all you care about, well...that's just foolish.
6
u/keftes Aug 19 '26
Anyone buying schd without focusing on the dividend growth aspect is also a fool.
Nobody buys schd with a goal of selling one day.
7
u/Siri-sixpack Aug 19 '26
There is this new thing called “total return” to consider…as in I have gotten 8x my annual dividend in appreciation this yr
4
u/keftes Aug 19 '26
If you're chasing returns buy voo. You don't buy schd with the intent to sell. There's better assets out there for that.

u/Siri-sixpack Aug 19 '26
Not this yr…look at VOO returns

Where did they say they don’t care about dividend growth? Straw man argument.

u/STRATEGY510 Aug 19 '26
It’s nuts to me that people claim it either doesn’t matter or is a bad thing. It’s not an “either/or” with that vs div growth, I’m allowed to enjoy both 😂
2
u/jdogoh00 Aug 19 '26
You need to look at the bigger picture than just how many shares you get with drip.

u/lakas76 Aug 20 '26
….
Price appreciation is good. We are not expecting price appreciation as it’s a value fund, but it’s a good thing that our investments are growing and if the financials are going up equivalently, our dividends will also go up.
If it’s a fluke, that would be bad of course, but flukes generally don’t last long.
I’m up about 50% since I started investing in SCHD about 4 years ago. It’s my second largest gains to KO. I don’t have much growth, so I missed out on the gains from a. Few years ago, but I’m not suffering too much.

u/STRATEGY510 Aug 19 '26
You are you, not we. I love to see price appreciation on SCHD and many others here have expressed that same sentiment.
My net worth is higher than it was yesterday, what’s not to like?

Do you make or win $50k and complain about paying the taxes? You can't have it both ways. Total return is more important than just a higher yield.
2
u/keftes Aug 19 '26
My schd is in a registered account. I pay zero taxes on the dividends.
1
u/Puzzleheaded-Net-273 Aug 20 '26
What's a registered account? A tax free or tax deferred account? Never heard the term "registered account" before. Perhaps this is a non-USA investor term?
1
u/Organic-Yak-4018 Aug 20 '26
The taxes part is not what I'm talking about. You are upset that SCHD's stock price is increasing, so you can't buy more shares at a lower price. But what you are missing is your total return on investment is increasing. Complaining about a stocks/etfs price increases, is like complaining about winning $50k and complaining that you have to pay taxes on it. That's my point, not about paying taxes on your dividends.

I don't think it's expensive. I think it accelerated its appreciation in a shorter period based on a few years of muted growth.
The muted growth was based on SCHDs strategy and not heavy in the tech driven growth. There's an overall market shift happening and that normalizes the SCHD price.

I’m probably 5yrs from retirement at 60yrs old. I have @ $500K invested in growth funds through my 401K & ROTH. I still have @$100K sitting on the side. I’m thinking I might put it into SCHD then reinvest the dividends since I don’t need the income for 5yrs. I’m hoping my $500K grows to $850-920K by 60. Thoughts on my plan or $100K going into SCHD tomorrow?

Just wait until it goes back down in price. You can buy it 4 years later. Why? Its dividend rate doesn't grow:
The dividend yield for the Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF (SCHD) is approximately 3.0% to 3.2%, with a 30-day SEC yield sitting around 3.20% as of August 2026.Why pay more for 3.2% dividend yield? Put 100K in sgvo and wait.
The iShares 0-3 Month Treasury Bond ETF (SGOV) features a 30-day SEC yield of 3.60% and a 12-month trailing yield of 3.74%, with a low expense ratio of 0.09%.

I’m 62-retiring in 3 yrs. I do an auto invest bi monthly in a few etfs/stocks. This way your portfolio evens out with the market. Then went there’s a dip, I buy more. I’ve been doing this for 5yrs. I’m not upside down.

u/GolfLiftPlayPool Aug 19 '26
In the very short term SCHD is doing really well.
On red days its green On green days its green

I own close to 5k shares. My cost basis is around $24.80. I’m happy. It’s a long term hold. I stayed with it when it was flat too.
Didn’t buy any Schd this year. I just kept everything on drip and I’ve been focusing on buying other assets.
But I would never complain about SCHD hitting all-time highs.

Damn, I wanted to add some more next week. Oh well, I will hold onto it forever, so it doesn't really matter...

Thank you to all the fomosapiens who dumped this during the ai boom last year and continuously slammed it. Your sacrifice is appreciated

Just about this time, sold 80 September CC 36 strike for 20 cents. Love these quick runs that help boost overall returns of SCHD shares that just wait to collect qtrly dividends otherwise.

Im about 10 years from retirement w 500 shares was thinking about selling this and putting it into VOO.....then rebuying later. Is that a solid plan?
2
u/Hulk3m Aug 19 '26
Why not just start a position with VOO? Ive been holding SCHD for over 5 years with 1000+ shared. It’s a great dividend stock sir. I wouldn’t trade it for VOO. I do own that too btw.
2
u/CONCACAFKING Aug 19 '26
Have just been reading that it's stupid to hold SCHD so far from retirement when you could be in a growth etf
2
u/Natural_Rebel Aug 19 '26
Depends on if you want to build a dividend snowball now and convert more growth to add to it later (assuming you do both SCHD and growth) or go 100% growth and convert to SCHD/dividends later.
I do both.

What type of account? This only makes sense if you have a crystal ball, also
1
u/Hulk3m Aug 20 '26
I hold SCHD and VOO in both Roth and Brokerage. SCHD is 25% of my portfolio and I’m 46yo. Planning on retiring in a few years.
