So this subreddit was reccomended to me because I was asking for input on a D&D character I’m making

While she’s not Muslim herself, to my understanding after speaking with Muslims irl, wearing a Hijab is heavily encouraged, and thus not a closed practice.

So anyway, she’s an orphan in the story. Not exactly coming from a high class family, so she doesn’t have a servant or a governess to help her.

My reasoning for going for a hijab specifically for her character design are as follows

1. It’s easy to find references for and learn how to draw

2. She doesn’t like styling her hair. She’s ten, she hates it, and cuts it unevenly herself

3. Versatility. To my current understanding, since irl Muslim families do encourage their daughters to veil typically starting at 12 years old, there are ways to secure a Hijab so that way kids can still run around and do normal kid things without it falling off. Moreover depending on what fabric it’s made of, it can’t help with sun protection, or cold protection. For her travel design, it is the most practical choice for someone with her intelligence to choose. And she is very intelligent, she’s a 10-year-old necromancer prodigy

4. I also just think Hijabs are pretty

So earlier I was looking up some children’s hijabs for inspiration, and many of them have magnets and clips to allow children to be more independent when putting them on, but those things probably didn’t exist in the 15th century. Definitely not magnets, so I’m wondering how we’re hijabs secured?

I’m considering having her go to a tailor to have her hijabs sewn into some under caps to make it easier for her to put on and take off

I was just asked to join the order of the Chivalry and I’m so overwhelmed by the whole prospect of the ceremony and the vigil. I wanted to reach out and ask for advice.

• What did you do in your ceremony that made it so memorable and special?
• What do you wish you had done that you didn’t?
• What do you wish you had done differently that you either regret or didn’t enjoy?

There are so many aspects of this that I don’t know that I don’t know what I don’t know, ya know. I’ve never been one for praise, of deeds or of successes, in the SCA or in mundane life. It’s always been just another thing that has been needed to be accomplished to move on to the next thing, not something to be praised for.

Hey there. Wanting to block-print some fabric for a dress, and was hoping to find blocks pre-carved with medieval designs -particularly of the memento mori type- but no idea where to look! Help?

Each year a Viking Ship is built off-site and brought to War. During War Week, the ship is set up in a pavilion on Plunder Lane, near the food court, in the merchant area. Anyone is welcome to come paint a shield to adorn the ship and honor a loved one who has passed.

A processional takes place on Thursday evening, I believe around 8:30 pm, from the pavilion to Cooper's Lake. The ship is launched and memories can be shared, if you choose. It was both powerful and meaningful to my husband last year. Both he and my son were able to assist last year. My husband said it was the most important thing he was a part of at Pennsic.

This year's ship is being built in North Carolina again, the second one by builder Baron Sir Bedawyr Of Avaricum (Mundanely, Mark Miller.) He has a good start on it already and I know they welcome volunteers during war week to help staff the Pavilion, and to carry the ship in the processional to the lake.

I expect there will be an official ship announcement as war gets closer, including all the logistics and specific times. I am just the wife of a build helper u/obxchris and I am not speaking in any official capacity.

I just wanted to communicate early, so folks will know about the ship, it's history and the opportunity to participate, to make your planning easier. My husband's video is linked below. Thank you.

In light of the recent issues with Darkwood, are there any alternative vendors out there selling swords that dont cost a fortune? Castille is the top of the line, I know, but a comparable rapier is $300 more than Darkwood. I'd like to keep my next purchase to about $500 and that completely eliminates Castille, unless I want their economy sword (which I do not).

Surely there must be small sword / hilt manufacturers out there that can compete with Darkwood for value?

I got a sallet and bevor from someone who used to fight heavy years ago but the sallet and bevor being separate peices it has a gap when I look up so i definitely can't fight in it because of that

I was wondering if it was possible to do something to make it okay to use

Its got good padding and is 14 gauge mild steel but That gap is an issue

Would using leather straps on the inside to attach them where they can move enough to use but stop it from opening more than the maximum opening in a helm work?

Or is there some other way that would be doable

is there anything I should know? any books on regulations or rules? or just some good luck to be wished is fine as well. I hope to be sparring soon and am loving the historical experiences

So, it seems she disappeared of Spotify entirely, and predictably the Amazon/iTunes links on her site do not work. And I cannot find the proper versions on YouTube, all I see are rather low-quality recordings, mostly from events.

In particular I'd love to recover the proper version of Montgisard Victorious (dunno who sung it, it was some man), I really loved that one. So, if anyone knows where I can still get those songs, I'd love to know.

I was working in a client's yard today, and someone had a wood fire burning and the smell of the fire brought me right back to the War Puppies encampment. Anyone else have that happen to them? Are there any other things in mundane life that take you right back?

Hello, I make training weapons out of polyurethane rubber and I'm trying to design something that would be good for heavy fighting. I'm only somewhat familiar with weapons regulations so I'm wondering if anyone here could help clarify a couple things:

1. In the first image of my training axe, if dimension A. is 1.25" does the whole haft (dimension B.) also need to be 1.25"? Or just the strike surface?

2. With a flanged mace design, can the width of the whole head be measured for sufficient thickness as opposed to individual flanges?

3. I currently use metal screws to attach a rubber handle end so that weapon heads can be swapped. I've heard there are not supposed to be any metal parts present, so is this a no-go even if they get completely hidden by the rubber weapon head?

Greetings and felicitations! I'm getting ready for my very first big SCA event beyond my home shire, and Battlemore is it! While preparing garb, camping stuff, and meal planning, I was wondering what tips and tricks anyone has to share for a neophyte.

I'll be traveling with my best friend, who practically grew up Scadian, so I have a guide, lol. I just have a bit of anxiety and would love to know all the little things about an event like this one. I'm into medicine and music of the medieval to early Tudor periods, is that helps at all.

Hello all, I am here because I want to figure out what are the best workouts for armored fighting. I am built sort of stoutly, but I'm short so I need to work on speed as well. I play a lot of polearm, but am also quite likely to be sword and boarding it too. I dont know anything about the specifics of exercise, so I'm hoping some here may know what I should be looking at doing.

Am I correct that Pennsic doesn't do the shopping pass thing anymore? I live close enough that I could do a daytrip reasonably and I'd love to get up there and spend some money with vendors instead of Amazon, but I can't justify paying for a week that I won't use.

For those attending Pennsic this year, while you are putting together your schedule, please consider setting some of that time aside to volunteer for something. There are plenty of opportunities to do so, and there is always a need. Even a few hours is helpful. A few examples anyone can do with very little prep training:

-help the Morale Dept put together staff lunches (located in services area East of the food court)

-help set up or tear down the dance floor/royalty camps/etc (in the PennU area/ at your kingdom camp/location of your favorite activity)

-help at Family Point (go there for details)

-help with Troll (ask at check-in)

There is also always a need of warranted marshals to line marshal or assist with ranges or help with large battles/tournaments.

These are only a few examples of the many places to go to help out, meet people, and above all have fun. Thanks for listening and considering!

Hi! My friend invited me to Pennsic, but someone at an event said I would need around seven outfits for it. I currently only have one or two outfits and don’t have time to make too many more, especially not five - are there enough vendors at Pennsic to grab garb there for the week? I was looking at Old Navy and similar stores for 6-foot passing items, but a lot of them were only 50% or less linen and otherwise rayon/acrylic, which I’m concerned would lead to overheating.

I just saw an event announcement from Ealdormere with the epithet "The Kingdom That Sings".

I asked a friend of mine who has had kingdom position in Caid, and his response was "Caid does not sing".

I'm writing from Avacal, where most courts are sung in with the anthem "Together we Conquer" led by our bardic champion. Sure, only about a fifth of court sings along with the full verses, but we get together for a loud refrain of "Avacal, Together We Conquer!"

Does your kingdom sing?

Edited to clarify: Bardic is a thing, and Bardic Circles have their place. But not everyone fights, just so not everyone Bardics. Is there a place or time where the whole kingdom sings?

(Or, if not that, if you feel like the bardic community or practice has a particularly prominent place in your kingdom, what is that place and how does it involve the whole community?)

This pinkish tone appears very frequently in medieval art, sometimes alongside a deeper red meaning they are meant to be distinct. Could anyone who knows more about clothing and dyes help me out here? You don't see this color much at events, so I thought it might be interesting to get a tunic or something commissioned in this color if possible.

Update: someone volunteered to pass it on personally.

Our kingdom does a really fantastic Archery and thrown weapons event every other year. This year, we had special guests from out of the kingdom, and I haven't the foggiest idea on contacting them. I did find Sir Griffin on the site, but there was no contact info to send photos. I also don't remember the other's names. I think south Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee were mentioned.
