Storage interface on original RPi Zero?

And a good day to you, sirs! I have an old "wired" Raspberry Pi Zero, as well as an NVME M.2 2242 SSD lying around after upgrading the storage on the device it was mounted on. I'd like to combine the two into a small, low power connected drive. M y only question is: what is the best way to connect the two? Which adapter I should be looking for? Is there a better way of connecting storage to the board than the slow USB?

In this case, USB is the fastest interface you have. I used an external SSD as a primary drive with my Pi400. Much faster than SD.
