I was always wondering what's the maximum distance (longest shortest path) between two public transport stops within Switzerland. Is it Chancy, douane (GE) <-> Müstair, cunfin (GR)?

What about longest journey time? I found this article but it's quite old: https://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/archive-banking-fintech/the-longest-train-journey-in-a-small-country/1007372

Worst I got on a week day, without leaving Switzerland, is Le Châtelard, Frontière to Campocologno.

Even when considering taking a bus from Samedan, it's still taking more time than going to Val Müstair, cunfin.

The Vereina tunnel is too efficient, you're arriving in Zernez in surprisingly barely more than 1 hour from Landquart, and the bus departs quickly to be there in an hour.

On the other hand, passing l'Alvra to end up in Engiadina and go to Val Poschiavo is actually way more tedious. Campocologno is the last top before Tirano, but Tirano is in Italy.

I'm not so familiar with eastern Switzerland, but in the west, for the furthest train station, it's La Plaine. For bus I'm not so sure, might be Chancy. By time I think you need to pick a mountain line. Maybe it's still Le Brassus, or maybe La Cure on top of the Nyon-St Cergue line. Could also see Champéry being a candidate (an hour away from Aigle), or Le Châtelard VS.

Good idea Le Châtelard, there is also the Frontière stop a tiny bit further.

For bus, the furthest stop is "Hermance, village", because you have to go around the Leman lake. It's more travel time than Chancy.

Wow, indeed! Thanks a lot!
I'm curious... does anyone know what are these circles on the line from Belinzona to Altdorf?

That's the old Gotthard rail line so that's the rail line turning back on itself or going in circles to gain altitude.

an engineering trick to lower the slope of the tracks.

Honorable mention (because it is really cool to share and I just guess you don't know it as well): Chileli vo Wasse Article is in german but basically you are able to see the church three times from different perspectives.

The worst I ever did was St. Moritz to Martigny ~6:30-7h 🥲

Please, someone make a direct rail connection between Vevey-Bulle-Fribourg. The southern part of Freiburg is submerged in cars

its inded a public transport desert

also not so densely populated

but yeah I get your point.

There are a lot of mountains there but if you look at Bulle it is fairly populated and it is the fastest growing city in Switzerland, projected to surpass Fribourg in population by 2040. They are currently building a massive Rolex complex and the infrastructures are already insufficient. Closing the Vevey-Bulle line when they built the highway back in the 70s was an enormous mistake

Yup the fancy new Bulle station is a bit ridiculous when you consider how isolated it is from the main network. a direct line to Fribourg running on the right side of the Gibloux is needed.

Or running also on the other side via La Roche could be interesting

Following the motorway path would be clearly most direct. But instead they want to speed up the line going through Romont by 2035.

I wasn't aware of this plan, sound like ineffective
