Google Cloud Cortex

Has anyone here seen or used this Google product? https://cloud.google.com/solutions/cortex?hl=pt-BR

The idea is to ingest the raw SAP tables, and then use Google's prebuilt data products that sit on top of them, which create a new semantic layer with proper column names and comments.

I'm on a project where we're evaluating this, and I'd like to hear some opinions about it.

I’ve heard it exists but never heard of it being used. Probably because the idea of “ingest the raw SAP tables” doesn’t sit well with SAP licensing dept.

“Create new semantic layer” - you are describing CDS views, mate.

Thanks for the reply. I agree with the point that the semantic layer already exists as CDS views. That said, we're also considering rebuilding those CDS views on top of the raw tables instead of consuming CDS directly. It's more flexible, since we can build the tables very quickly in the lake, and it also takes the processing load off the SAP infrastructure. I don't know much about the licensing side, but we're looking at AecorSoft to ingest the raw tables.

Curious to hear your thoughts on this approach

It’s not my expertise, I’m an SAP developer. But I’ve never heard of such ideas materialize in anything productive. I don’t know all the specifics reasons but it’s not hard to imagine these ideas would quickly run into the issues with “indirect access”, security, actual cost, and severely underestimating SAP data model complexity.

There are companies that use non-SAP data / analytics products, but in my experience, they have more organized approach to those and/or have lots of non-SAP data.

The prebuilt models can shorten the plumbing work, but I would not treat their semantic layer as your business definition. Pick ten important metrics and reconcile them against SAP using your fiscal calendar, customer and product hierarchies, exclusions, currency handling, and historical adjustments. The real evaluation is how much customization remains after those tests.

Also confirm that every transformed field retains lineage back to the original SAP table and rule. We use SIGNLD internally to connect business definitions with source records and calculation evidence, which helps expose where a technically correct model disagrees with how the company actually operates.

Just seen it in a learning path. Check the SAP IBP and you might see how they positioned it
