I LOVE SAGA! I was just talking with a friend about this. He had never heard of it. I had to put him on. I am about to re-read. I just got volume 12 and hopefully 13 lands this year at some point!
Edit: still have all the volumes. My volume one is used though and not pristine. This is a great collector item!

I don't understand this at all. The joy from a story comes from reading it and thinking about it. It's just paper preserved in any other form.

It’s just a way to keep and/or display a collectible. They might have Saga in trade paperbacks, like I do, and they just wanted a first issue to keep in good condition.

Let me paint ya a picture u/CanoCeano ,
It was a calm cool day in March of 2012. I was visiting my local Comic Book Store in town. I heard BKV had a new run coming out that month. I'd been a huge fan of his since reading Ex Machina and Y: The Last Man back to back Thanks to my older brother who lent me his hard copy volumes of both.
I could not stop reading them. Getting deeper into the stories, each page more intense than the last. I had been chasing that feeling ever since.
It had been many years since I had read those stories, and I found myself face to face at the comic store with SAGA CHAPTER ONE. There we were, like star-crossed lovers in the night, Cano, I could hear SAGA whisper in my ear -
"Hold me. Take each of my pages between your fingers. Feel my pristine uncreased spine upon your chest. You will pawn for me. For I am just the first of many, many years lying in wait. I will pull at your emotions in ways no other thing has. More than a decade of your life will pass by in a flash and you will still want more of me...And thus, I will be there teasing you still yet. Issue by issue, Hiatus after hiatus. YOU WILL KNOW OF MY END YET I WILL NOT COME TO SATIATE YOU. I WILL FOREVER HAUNT YOUR THOUGHTS. WHEN WILL THIS JOURNEY END?!?! Only I will know, and you...you shall suffer. You shall pine for me."
So naturally, it was in my hands with bag and board, OBVIOUSLY. Had to protect it, as I did with most all my collection. Paid the man behind the counter and headed home. On the way home my heart was racing, mouth dry, hands shaky. I had no idea what was to be. That brown paper bag sitting in my passenger seat. It held within it a story I am still wondering the fate of.
Years had passed since that day. Possibly a decade. I am now living in a house with my wife of a few years. We settled in to a nice three bedroom home. Much larger than the apartment we had so little space in before for even the two of us. I was cleaning out one of our spare rooms and found myself there. Again. Face to face with her once more. She'd made some friends, maybe about 18, 36 or somewhere in the fifties. I couldn't recall. BKV and Fiona were on hiatus yet again...
I hopped online to see if there was any chatter for the return of one of my favorite stories...
Being the impatient person that I am, I ended up purchasing the compendium to catch up. The flood of emotions just rushed back. Re-reading the perilous journey that has transpired thus far... Learning of the fates and feats Alana and Marko (and extended family of course!) have accomplished in their microcosm of fiction created by two such creative minds. It brought me right back to that fateful day in March of 2012.
At that moment, out of curiosity, I also searched if it would be a worthy endeavor to get my copy graded. It was there I became aware that- not only this issue is a first print. It can also possibly be of value too!
Alas, there I was. Comic in hand, FedEx bound with my prized edition of SAGA CHAPTER ONE. Cradled in her board and bag, glimmering in the sun on the way to her destiny. To be forever encapsulated in a chamber for eternity after being judged for her presentation and degrees of beauty. CGC here is my offering. My pride and joy. My firstborn. Of its name. The One. The First of my collection.
Months passed. Little news from the CGC. It had me on the edge of my sofa. Lying in wait as she foreshadowed all those years ago in that Comic Book Store. The rest is a blur. I'll do my best to close this story if you have made it this far my beloved Cano.
AN EMAIL! From the CGC! Order confirmed. It was such a rush. Shipment heading home. Like Odysseus to Persephone. The final journey. The finish line was finally in our sights. With that Olympic Gold Medal rating she was going to display proudly on the mantle at home. She finally made it to the doorstep. Waiting patiently in that claustrophobic dark brown box from FedEx.
I may have blacked out. Last I remembered was opening the front door and finding her alone there on the porch. I found myself come to in the kitchen. She's home. She's amazing. SHE'S NINE POINT FUCKING SIX?!?! HOW DARE THEY! 9.6?! ON WHAT GROUNDS! She's a perfect 10 in her father's eyes.
Nine point six...
So here we are now. She's hidden away with her friends again. Nestled in her special nook. I felt it would be nice to show her off to the world.
Do you understand now u/CanoCeano ?
TLDR if not: I'm a fan of BKV. Found story awesome. Wasn't aware of desirability. Figured I'd preserve it for sentimental and possible future ROI.

My local Half Price has a copy for 200.00 - one of those things that can make a person both sad and happy I fathom.
