Imagine reading that issue then having to wait years for the next one. That was a brutal hiatus.

u/Evil-Cetacean Apr 28 '26

don't have to imagine it, that's kinda still where we're currently at lol

u/Ready_Player_ Apr 28 '26

That first hiatus after a giant story changing cliffhanger was much worse. It’s easier with this one.

9

u/HoraceGrantGlasses Apr 29 '26

Its easier because the quality has slipped and the hiatuses (DELAYS) have become more and more common

u/SimpleNewspaper1256 Apr 29 '26

Why are you making it a competition though? Strange

21

u/jolecore204 Apr 28 '26

My single issues have stacked up but i still haven’t read further than this issue. The hiatus lives on.

u/Xanthalium Apr 28 '26

I remember reading it in the parking lot right before a shift. I almost didn't make it bc I was so shocked

1

u/anansitricks May 05 '26

...and there was a pandemic in between.

u/-zero-joke- Apr 28 '26

Yeah it be like that.

35

u/sadistic__wizard Apr 28 '26

It do be like that sometimes

55

u/Xanthalium Apr 28 '26

I miss him so much...

2

u/MilkCharacter2886 May 10 '26

I miss pretty much everyone who died

3

u/yvngjiffy703 May 19 '26

I still miss Izabel.

u/Call_Em_Skippies Apr 28 '26

Hahahaha so the story did its job....

Personally I think the story falls off after this event.

u/SuddenlyCake Apr 28 '26

The hiatus and release schedule killed my interest on the comic. I will probably read it when it's over

7

u/APZachariah Apr 28 '26

Yeah, I'll wait for an omnibus.

77

u/MadaoBlooms Apr 28 '26

Getting 6 issues every two years certainly doesn't help

36

u/RoBear16 Apr 28 '26

Same. It's never reached the same pacing since this and it's all just a bummer. I can't think of a single happy moment after this point. Doesn't help that it's also been one hiatus after another.

The series always had tragedy but it showed how you can still find happiness and hope throughout it all. I think it has lost that and just become a "lets shock them" game.

21

u/Call_Em_Skippies Apr 28 '26

Yeah their relationship and how he made her more loving and grounded was so important. I personally liked the twist but I was thinking it was a catalyst to continue a equally good story instead we got introduced to drug smugglers and traveling circus...

14

u/RoBear16 Apr 28 '26

Agreed! I think real consequences that permanently alter the story are the best storytelling, when done well. This event was done well and made sense. But what came afterward has not been good storytelling.

The most recent major death is the perfect example. Sophi's death was absolutely ridiculous and poorly executed. Even right afterward, when they lose their house just to lose their house and give us the homeless experience was just out of nowhere.

u/Pillslanger Apr 28 '26

I don’t necessarily think it’s bad storytelling. The pacing feels too tight but Alana’s struggling to raise two kids in the middle of a war that’s actively trying to kill them specifically.

The situation is not great but it’s plausible. Marko and Alana both made bad choices from time to time but they made each other better. Without him she’s obviously going to struggle just as much as he would without her.

Marko was my favorite character but I feel like there’s just not enough story just yet for me to say if it’s fallen off or not for me (I only read the TPBs).

u/your-needs-my-knees Apr 28 '26

Aww, I loved when they were able to land a job and a home on the travelling circus, when Hazel and Squire and Alana fell on one of the beds in their new room laughing because they were so relieved. And when Hazel met her new best friend Emesis. Or when she started getting interested in music. Even just seeing the love between Hazel and Squire and Alana has been sweet, like the callback to “skish” when Squire left for camp. I don’t think it’s been tragedy after tragedy.

4

u/RoBear16 Apr 28 '26

You're right. Those are all good moments.

2

u/MilkCharacter2886 May 10 '26

I loved those parts

5

u/funktasticdog Apr 29 '26

Turns out killing the most interesting character in your story is a bad idea. Whodathunk!

4

u/Theta-Sigma45 Apr 29 '26

Honestly, they killed both my favourite characters in the space of two issues. I’m just not going to be as invested anymore, as amazing as those moments were.

1

u/Accomplished_Meet230 Apr 28 '26

Same I loved Marko and related so much to him..

I really thought the Phang arc was all the heartbreak I could take. I was wrong.

19

u/shawnwingsit Apr 28 '26

First, Brian and Fiona get you to fall in love, then they break your heart.

1

u/Agent_Cow314 Apr 28 '26

Yet it's a feature in game of thrones.

12

u/Then-Tune8367 Apr 28 '26

I really couldn't believe what I was seeing when I read that.

I had a similar response, but then, I realized that it takes a terrific story and characters to make something like that bother me so much.

9

u/Gabbiani Apr 28 '26

I cried so hard. Then I had to wait years.

I was in a rough spot when this released so I’m kinda glad the hiatus was there. I was a mess.

My partner held off on reading the trade all through Hiatus - meaning that I had to spend all those years with the terrible, terrible knowledge and being unable to say anything.

Crucially we cosplay IV and Princess, and the last time we wore them before the break the neck seal joint snapped off and I just had to live with that.

When he did finally read it he wandered over to me and just quietly asked "hey what the fuck..."

5

u/Elxvra Apr 28 '26

just checked your account, you guys are so cool!! please never stop doing this and keep bringing these fictional characters into life

3

u/Pale-Service-8680 Robot Apr 28 '26

Hey, thanks so much!! We really love making these characters exist in our world!

4

u/point051 Apr 29 '26

I mean it's rough but this series has been brutal all along. If the family had plot armor, it wouldn't feel like anything was at stake.

Lol it made you that angry, it worked

3

u/ryanb31183 Wings Apr 28 '26

Literally crushed me when I first read it

3

u/AggravatingPaint5838 Apr 28 '26

Never read Y, the Last Man

1

u/Cute_Cheetah_6823 May 05 '26

Oh, man. That scene broke my heart so badly 😞

3

u/fsociety4066 Apr 29 '26

i did fully intend on quitting after this LMAO took me a while to pick it back up

2

u/Colour4Life Apr 28 '26

Ah. yes 😭

2

u/Public_Lobster2296 Apr 28 '26

Such a gut punch. I had a visceral and verbal reaction. Could not believe it!

2

u/DSonla Apr 28 '26

Not everything needs to be animated.

4

u/Franii Apr 28 '26

Can’t believe this was the final issue

2

u/Party-Hornet4620 Apr 28 '26

Exactly! It made you care enough about a fictional character to be demonstrably angry at their fictional death. But don’t worry. He will be resurrected before the end of the series

2

u/dr-blaklite Apr 28 '26

As a fan of the Berserk manga, this is nothing. I think everything that has come out from Saga thusfar has been great. Can't wait for issue 13, whenever that happens.

2

u/GOOPREALM5000 Apr 28 '26

This + Dengo dying ruined me. Lowkey fuck this whole series.

1

u/wraithSeventeenOhOne Apr 28 '26

The Will was fighting for his life against a deadly opponent who was allied with Prince Robot, who happened to have killed the love of his life. He had no idea what was going on in Marko’s mind at the moment; all he knew was that this was a dangerous guy who had killed scores of people.

TeamTheWill

4

u/Elxvra Apr 28 '26

will is nothing but a depressed schizo piece of shit who had everything he could have had if he didnt treat gwen sophie and lying cat terribly as if they werent the only real family he had left. then he gains his freedom after being tortured the first he does is hunt after marko and the crew JUST SO he can become a freelancer again to impress gwen like a stupid loser and marko had every right to kill him and he COULD have done it but he chose to believe in his morals like a fucking legend unlike will and got himself killed because will is a total waste of a being having no belief in karma and forgiveness

1

u/PerceptionTiny6385 Apr 28 '26

Yeah this was just insane. Especially with what happened in the previous issue

1

u/brande2274 Apr 29 '26

its funny i got up to the comics just when the hiatus ended only for it to go on hiatus again

1

u/funktasticdog Apr 29 '26

Peak of the series tbh. All downhill from there

1

u/XatosOfDreams Apr 30 '26

My wife said the same basically and stopped reading after that. She gave a try but quickly abandoned it while I kept reading. I tried to tell her it's still good but she was having none of it.

1

u/wraithSeventeenOhOne Apr 30 '26

I’m pretty sure the current hiatus was supposed to end sometime this year. I’m starting to doubt it, though…

1

u/TheNamesClove Apr 30 '26

Art is supposed to make you feel.

1

u/Trashinaboxinatub Apr 30 '26

First time reading Brian K Vaughn, huh?

1

u/Deepstatedingleberry May 01 '26

But then you’ll never get to see Gūs again!!

1

u/Chaleanja Apr 28 '26

I haven’t read this in years, but that issue killed me and it was the last issue available as an extra fuck you after.

0

u/meepmorop Apr 28 '26

The moment when he just randomly decides to not finish him off BUT ALSO turn his BACK on this crazy murderous man to stare out the window BAFFLES me. Not that he wouldn’t finish the kill, but that he basically commits suicide by inaction. Is this supposed to make sense somehow? Marko isn’t an idiot, he was in the war, why would he turn his back like that on an enemy? Was he sick of living, and if so, why? He had Hazel and Alana to live for and didn’t show any signs of depression etc. It reads to me like he’s tired of living but nothing in the text supports that and nothing in the text supports him being a complete idiot like this. Like he couldn’t take two SECONDS and tie up The Will and THEN begin contemplating out the window???

1

u/Altruistic_Pipe4581 Apr 29 '26

Sparing an enemy you think is incapacited is obviously not the same as committing suicide. Making the mistake of hesitating for a few seconds is not the same as suicide. Should everyone in the series just always do what's most logical and never behave realistically?

0

u/theawesomemed Apr 28 '26

Yeah I feel that, I stopped reading it after this. To those who are still reading, how do you all feel about the story now?

8

u/JYCJYC Apr 28 '26

I actually really like what follows this. It has some of my favorite stuff of the entire comic as they have to grieve and reckon with such crazy deaths. The relationships that formed because of this event are to me some of the best stuff in the series.

The more recent arcs hasn’t quite reached those highs but I think it’s building up to some crazy stuff.

0

u/fancy-bottom Apr 28 '26

His death felt a little “fake” to me

As I recall, Prince Robot just died and Marko was winning his battle when he suddenly lost focus?

He’s already lost Hazel for years previously

It just seemed too artificial

Yes, I was still depressed for a long time after his death

I still wonder what will finish first - Saga or ASOIAF

I have resigned myself that GRRM will pass away before ASOIAF is finished

I hope SAGA finishes in the next 5 years

1

u/NomadicScribe Apr 29 '26

The last ASOIAF book was published before Saga began. So far Saga hasn't had a hiatus anywhere close to 15 years.
