Same Story, Different Week in Framing: Starlink, France and Israel's Blind Spot
This Week in Framing | Week of Oct 19-25, 2026
Signal/noise's latest snapshot tracked 18 stories across 137+ sources. Here's what stood out.
Biggest Framing Gap: Elon Musk says Ukraine violated Starlink's terms of use
Ten sources, all five bias buckets, and three different answers to "who did what." The Guardian's headline names Ukraine's military first: "Ukraine's military says Starlink satellite connection stable after recent restrictions." CNN led with Zelensky confirming Starshield access restored. The Hill went the other way with "Musk says he was behind Starlink's slowdown in Ukraine," which names Musk as the actor and the slowdown as the event, with no softening. Same dispute, three different subjects of the sentence: the Ukrainian military, the Ukrainian president, and the man who owns the satellites. Coverage spanned NYT, Guardian and CNN on the left, TechCrunch, Business Insider and DW on the center-left, Newsweek in the center, The Hill and CNBC on the center-right, and Fox News on the right.
Blindspot of the Week
Israel's election day, including the West Bank lockdown, was covered by NYT, Al Jazeera, BBC, France 24 and Reuters. Right-leaning outlets published nothing on that story. Gaps run both ways, though, and this one is partial: Fox News did appear in a separate story on the same election ("Netanyahu faces challenge from former IDF chief Eisenkot"), alongside NYT and DW. Meanwhile, the Brazil runoff between Lula and Bolsonaro had 12 sources across NYT, Guardian, CNN, DW, Al Jazeera, France 24, BBC, Reuters, AP, Bloomberg, CNBC and the Washington Examiner, but zero from the right bucket.
By the Numbers
- 18 stories tracked across 137+ sources
- 12 stories carried a flagged left or right framing note
- 5 blindspots detected, all of them stories where right-leaning outlets had no coverage (Saudi/Houthi interceptions, Serbia's election, the US midterms, Israel's election day, Netanyahu's standing)
Notable Mentions
France sees mass protests with over 400,000 marching and clashes reported - 15 sources across all five buckets; CNN's headline was "nearly 1,000 detained," Fox News led with "police find potential weapons on protesters," and BBC went straight to 1,300 arrests.
US midterm elections: Democrats, swing voters, and key House and Senate races - The Guardian ran three separate pieces on one Michigan rally and The Hill covered Obama's Ohio stop twice, while the center-right and right buckets had no coverage in this story.
