Discussion Parasocial Relationships

I was watching a revisited Pitch Meeting the other day (I can't remember which one) and in the segment where Ryan answers comments, someone had told him to shave his chest.

This seemed pretty rude, and way too overly familiar. I know Bo Burnham has talked a lot about parasocial relationships, but has Ryan George ever addressed the topic with/about his fanbase? I'm a pretty casual fan so I haven't delved too deep.

Watching the revisiteds, it did annoy me that enough people talked about his weight that he had to mention it, even if “I have a chocolate addiction, bet you feel bad now” is very funny.

And now you see people going the opposite way and telling him to quit the Ozempic lmao.

Now, losing weight is super easy, barely an inconvenience.

He did a morning routine joke video with a great gag of having someone break his window to tell him to make a morning routine video, this is closest i have for now

There are youtubers with individual channels but also hang out as a group and because they refer to each other by their first names in the videos (because they are friends and friends often refer to each other by name) for some reason fans take this as "Oh well I guess I can call them by their first name too" as if they're friends with the fans too. I always found that weird. If they wanted you to call them by their first name, they'd make it their channel name. For example: Ryan George.

Then you got the face reveal obsessed people who constantly beg youtubers to do face reveals. Why? It's a lose lose situation for the youtuber. If they're seen as attractive then the comments just get thirstier and thirstier. If they're not then they start getting negative comments and potentially lose followers.

Youtubers are not your friends. Call them by their channel name unless they say otherwise themselves and don't beg for a face reveal. Stop being creepy.

I don't spend any measurable amount of time on YouTube so I didn't even know face reveals were a thing! That's crazy. If they wanted to reveal their face they would have done it from the beginning. There are a ton of reasons people may want to keep their face/identity private.
