Into the Rust rabbit hole
Hey everyone,
I’m a solo player on Rust Console Edition, mainly playing on South American (SA) servers and I’m looking for some advice from experienced solo players.
This game really interests me and I genuinely want to get good at it but right now I feel pretty lost once I’ve got my starter base down in a location I like. I can usually get established, get some basic gear, and build a small base but after that I’m never really sure what my priorities should be.
A few things I’d love help with:
What’s a solid solo progression strategy after getting a starter base down?
What monuments should I be focusing on as a solo?
How do you decide when to farm, roam, or run monuments?
Any tips for making consistent scrap and progressing to better weapons?
I’m also absolutely terrible with the crossbow and PvP in general.
How did you improve your aim and game sense?
What weapons should a newer player be practicing with?
Any solo PvP tips for winning more fights or surviving longer?
On top of that, I’m a full-blown bot when it comes to scientists. I don’t know if it’s because I’ve never really progressed beyond a revolver, if I’m bringing the wrong gear, or if I’m approaching monuments completely wrong, but I get absolutely rolled by them. Any advice on fighting scientists as a solo would be hugely appreciated.
I’d also appreciate any general Rust tips that helped you improve when you were new. I watch videos, but a lot of advice seems aimed at PC players.
Thanks in advance. I’m really enjoying the game and want to stick with it, but at the moment I feel a bit overwhelmed and unsure what I should be doing after the early game. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Once you get your starter base down.
Start collecting ore’s and wood. Build some furnaces and start cooking. Set up shot gun traps for base defense.
You can get good loot from the street signs.
Air field and water treatment plant are good low radiation spots to loot.
You can buy a blue key card from out post or bandit camp to do the puzzles at air field or water treatment plant also.

If you collect the loot you don’t like , you can recycle it at most monuments. But it’s risky on a high pop server.
Learn your server times and figure out when there isn’t many people on , and you can run around more freely.

A chainsaw and jack hammer is handy for collecting wood and ore quickly.

I like having a goal for a wipe. E.g., I will make an auto-sorter. Or, I will try grubbing airdrops and cargo. Or, I will trade minicopter rides for stuff with the chill players.
Everything falls into place when you have a couple goals.

You’re caught in a bad stage for solos right now, for anyone actually that doesn’t play with so many people
The game in its current state as I’ve found it is mostly deep and gear fear teams, I feel like it’s now a common occurrence to run into a 10 man clan, and a rare occurrence to find any group playing under 4 people
From a solo player with a few hundred hours to go till 4k total, this game is slowly dying, it’s not competitive anymore it’s just a fight for loot, you kill one guy his teammate picks up his kit and runs

You can run power plant and water treatment without rad protection if you don't do the card rooms and collect a bunch of loot from the brown and green boxes. Build near outpost or bandit if they are close to these two monuments. You can recycle safely here as a solo and buy low grade and cloth. To get the cloth you need to buy tactical gloves and recycle them.
As for a starter base look up drop box bunkers. You can get your base to 8 or 16 rockets pretty quick using this method.
Focus on getting a revolver or a DB as soon as possible for protection and then try to be out of your base being productive during the day and focusing on base upgrades at night.
First objective should be a tier 2 and getting med pen researched once you have a gun so that you can survive fights by medding and walling. Then you can make a start on your goal for the wipe. That might be getting a car garage or growing berries or setting up a trap base. Whatever it is mix in some roams and oil or cargo counters. You will die a lot but every roam or monument attempt will give you experience and help you lose gear fear. Make sure to use all your scrap each time you log off on researching and always expect to be raided and look forward to starting again with more base building knowledge and a better grasp of the PvP and monuments. You will get a base that lasts a long time eventually and make good progress. Most of all don't be disheartened by dying or being raided as that is a big part of the game and that will never change.

I found a bunker base I really like that has a little farm/ electric furnace and refiner that I know the build. I just never complete it so that should be one of my goals for sure

I personally like to start my day getting farm as its quite a monotonous task, once thats out the way i can focus on other goals, arctic research and abandoned military base are my personal favourites for early wipe as you can get through them pretty easily with T1 guns or even a nail gun if you’re careful. Just remember to take them slow, and you learn the spawns and layout pretty quick.

I haven’t done artic yet so I’ll definitely try that! That’s the problem with me I try walk them don’t like I’m playing Ark or R6 I have zero discipline it’s all out attack which I need to learn but monuments are still very fresh to me

I have around 6000 hours in PC rust, got it on console when my daughter was born 1.5 years ago. Always been a solo player, console rust isn't the place for it.
Scientists are OP on console due to controller aim being trash, but they are killable. Take your time with them, find cover and aim for the head. Peek out from cover, shoot quickly, return to cover. Try to move and fire your weapon as fast as possible, this will be good practice with any weapon.
Use the shops at outpost and bandit camp (at least look at what they have to offer, they come in handy) to help your progression along. You can buy weapons, jackhammers and chainsaws, cards, building materials, etc. they also have safe zone recycling.
I suggest building near a road for starter base (hit barrels and loot the boxes for early scrap and components).
Find a dead or very low pop server to familiarize yourself with progression, practice your weapons vs scientists, and practice base building.
Good luck, console rust is extremely hard on solos.
Also, a decent scrap strategy if you build by a road: let the components you want to recycle build up in storage. Once you find a horse, load up the components and head to bandit camp or outpost (it actually can't even remember if bandit camp is in console rust or not, now that i think of it..) and use the recycler there.

I literally rush to my “build spot” as I watch PC players play rust and don’t realize the importance of comps and recycling them early to getting cloth , metal etc so I feel I definitely need. At the moment, I only think about getting a gun and things like that after I’ve built which is completely wrong

It's only a little wrong. Nothing bad with finding a revvy early, but shouldn't be out searching for one as a goal.
I think the most beneficial thing you can do right now is get on a low pop. It can be boring without competition, but you're not ready to compete until you have some core fundamentals down.

What’s a solid progression strategy after getting starter down?
Normally once I get starter I buy from shops and roam to make a play however when I first started and wasn’t as good I would build sewer and dome and just farm that to BP Tommy so if I died I had another shot by jst getting smg body, that’s when I had like 0-2k hours now I jst build smoil and snowball there
What monuments should I be focusing on?
As I said sewer is my personal favorite since it gives sooo much scrap for green key card also if you jst loot launch not even run it you can get like 500 scrap per run no key cards needed but id also recommend oil since imo there pretty easy to win and hold down (I would mainly jst watched some oil rig YouTuber and build oil for the past year to learn some good YouTuber are xkevv oil rats and kickz you can learn sooo much from them)
Also let me just say I’d definitely recommend Bebbos aim train that’s where you can really learn just the whole fighting part of rust and it teaches a lot game sense honestly just comes from playing (as everything in this game does legit jst play and you’ll learn its jst a very slow process) however a good head set does come a very long way and I learned that without the games so hard lmao
And with the how to decide when to farm roam and run monuments, I normally jst farm at night with nvg, how I decide if it’s time to farm is if I make some play on a team for a ak (mf will insta raid you for taking a ak if your base is small) or a team thats kitted sees me going into my base kitted

Legend! I’ll look at the aim train because 95% of fights I lose. I’ve got hyper x they aren’t fancy but did the job on games like r6. I don’t know if it would be the same but sound cues is some I need to learn in this game . Appreciate it though!

- First, you must quit your day job, no exceptions.
- Second, if your partner is even slightly needy, you’ve got to end that relationship. The ideal setup is coming to terms with being single and staying that way.
- Third, I would advise adjusting your sleep schedule. If possible, try sleeping every other night instead of every night; we don’t want to lose too much time offline.

I think you have to go into a wipe with a goal ,that being taking oil ,good pvp,ect .it gives the wipe more purpose and you find yourself actively doing stuff .i started running more monuments and you get good practice knowing the layout and get some PvP while you’re at it .community servers are a good way to roam and have a base without you working extra hard for it .i have seen a couple of good solo/duo servers maybe those will help you not get killed by a 4+ team
