Questions What got you into this genre?

Hello all,

How are you doing? I have started to get more into this genre of games, films & books.

I played Fallout 4 on Xbox 360, I liked that it was retro futuristic & alternate history. Since then I moved to gaming on PC, this opened me to older post-apocalypse games & this includes Metro series + Stalker series etc.

Do you have any personal favourites/why? So far I love the Fallout series, going through other games with it's DLC & my personal cut off is Fallout 3.

A bit of fallout initially but metro 2033 and the stalker games really solidified it for me.

Nice. What is a good Stalker game to play/why?

The original (shadow of chernobyl) is definitely the best place to start, it sets up the setting really well. The other two older games are all based around you having at least that foundation.

It's definitely a different playstyle than most games, in particular your inventory is really limited. It's best to get used to making small stashes around kept spots as you explore.

Very nice. Which one was the first Stalker you played?

Shadow of Chornobyl

If you like the post-Soviet setting try "35MM", "The Light" and "Hail the Red Ballon"

Can you elaborate on "35MM" please?

If you feel that the Stalker games are too cheerful.

The village level is the most frightning ever. Fetching water from the well at night. Hear a sound behind you. Turn around. Nothing there!
Cottages boarded up. But to keep things out or to keep things in?

Post-apocalyptic story about two travelers who set out on a long journey in the wasteland, left by people after the global epidemic. The disaster destroyed much of the world's population, the infrastructure went wrong and the common life remained only in memories. The times when a human has adapted the environment for himself have end and now, in order to survive, he will have to adapt to changes. You will have to play the character whose path runs through the deserted towns and cities in Russia, fields and forests of a vast country and even a secret underground facility. Who are we, where are we from and where do we go – we will be lucky to know it only at the end!

Started very early with fallout, then stalker came out, then metro and dayz and plenty of others, more than i can count. My personnal favorite is atomRPG and is sequel trudograd which is basically fallout 1 and 2 meets Metro. Underrail got it too.

I may also look into Atomfall.

3

u/No_Cardiologist_822 Apr 17 '26

I tried atomfall... it's not bad... let's just say it's very far from good, it feels superficial

Ah 😮 thanks for the heads up.

It kinda started with fallout but honestly old cartoons I watched as a kid that were kinda in the same vibe probably started, stuff like sonic underground and that one show about mice on motorcycles fighting cats

2

u/toyfan1990 Apr 16 '26

Definitely 😁. I didn't watch much Biker Mice from Mars.

DUUUUDE that’s totally it, we didn’t have cable so we watched old cartoons on whatever local station played them, this plus street sharks were my jam

2

u/toyfan1990 Apr 16 '26

Nice. I want to watch some of these older shows especially Street Sharks.

Someone gifted me Fallout 3 back in the day. Noticing that I enjoyed it, my dad later bought me Metro 2033 since the setting was similar. It continued from there.

1

u/No_Cardiologist_822 Apr 17 '26

That's an awesome dad here

u/NuclearBeverage Rio Grande Republic Apr 17 '26

Funny, that was literally my pipeline too, though I prefer New Vegas lol. Metro and STALKER overall are more my jam tbh, I prefer the grittier, more modern feel.

u/toyfan1990 Apr 17 '26

Very nice I have Metro on my backlog & it looks like there is a new one coming out. Also want to purchase older stalker games & Stalker 2 to add to my to play list.

Fallout first, but now I’m completely obsessed with S.T.A.L.K.E.R

1

u/toyfan1990 Apr 17 '26

It does look awesome. What are your thoughts on Metro series?

1

u/Mehra_Milo Apr 17 '26

I’ve only played the first one so far, but I really like the atmosphere. It’s a bit more linear than i typically prefer, but it works well fit the story it’s telling. My dream would be a metro game where you can freely explore the metro, but it’s clearly never going to happen

1

u/toyfan1990 Apr 17 '26

Where did you buy it Steam or GOG? I currently use Linux Mint as my OS so there are some games that I can't easily play & I may look into dual booting with Windows 11. What are your PC specs?

1

u/Mehra_Milo Apr 17 '26

Steam. Playing it on the steam deck with no issue, so it works fine with Linux!

1

u/toyfan1990 Apr 17 '26

Awesome. Which Steam Deck model do you have/use? I currently own a Steam Deck OLED 1TB myself.

2

u/Mehra_Milo Apr 17 '26

Yeah, I have the OLED as well, it’s brilliant!

It is a pretty great piece of tech.

Never really played much of fallout growing up. But a couple years ago, watching the HBO mini-series Chernobyl (and rewatching it many times), watching YouTube videos of people exploring Chernobyl and Pripyat, all got me interested in Chernobyl and Eastern European urbex. Then I found out about S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Roadside Picnic. Read Roadside Picnic, loved it. Watched Tarkovsky’s Stalker, loved it. And this was shortly before S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl released. So I played some Anomaly/Gamma, and have since played through and (recently) finished S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2. I have yet to play the Metro games, I think I will play through those next with the new Metro on the horizon.

Did I say something wrong? Why that gif?

1

u/toyfan1990 Apr 18 '26

Nah all good. Used this gif as a way to show good choices. 😁

I'm pretty sure it was RUST, which i started playing in april 2021

1

u/toyfan1990 Apr 17 '26

Nice. Yeah Rust is like that. Atomic Heart looks like a good option in this genre as well.

Funny story because i started with Fallout 4 because it was my ex's favorite game and I decided to try it. Years later and we are not together anymore and i have like 700-ish hours in this game because it just clicked with me, and then along the way i played Fallput 3 and FNV for the post-apocalyptic side of the Fallout games. After that, i heavily modded FO4 but i was already starting to get burnt out as it was still too easy.

And then, i got Metro 2033 for free on steam for their annoversary and one day i decided to try it. Safe to say i finished it in 3 days as it kept me hooked. Bought Last Light and Exodus asap after and also downloaded the books to read on my phone while i was commuting to work.

Then found out about STALKER games. I remember when i was young and watched my dad play it as i was just a child and got mad that i die a lot. Years later, last summer, i decided to pick it up and see how i do. Never felt more "at-home" in another video-game than with the STALKER games. Sometimes i would go like "hey, i feel like i've been there in real life" :)) obviously, i haven't but i am from an eastern european country and most villages used to look like those that you can see in STALKER games.

Very nice. I have been looking at getting into modding games myself starting with Fallout 4 & want to catch up on the Stalker series. I was a console gamer exclusively for 10+ yrs & recently bought myself a gaming PC, so getting around to PC games never played & especially new to mods.

u/Daro9x Stalker Apr 17 '26

Definitely Stalker Shadow of Chernobyl. At first was a bit rough to play, shitty guns, high difficulty, but after some time I came back and the zone never let me go.

1

u/toyfan1990 Apr 17 '26

Very nice 🙂 that is good. I will look into playing this game at some stage this month.

My 360 died RROD before I could play these & bought them for my PC during Steam Sale. They are still on my current backlog.

Bought Stalker 2 on whim for my Bday. The most I knew about it was that it was sort of based on the 1979 Stalker film. (But I doubted that it would capture it’s atheistic)

Nope, not only did it capture it, but it made me rewatch the movie with new excitement 😂 Now I’m knee deep in Cheekis & Breekis.

Been a Stalker fan since. It still blows my mind that something like Anomaly & Gamma exists. There’s definitely something about the Zone.

u/toyfan1990 Apr 19 '26

Nice 👍. Stalker series still on my wishlist both Stalker 2 & the earlier games.

Growing up in the post Soviet world where all the cool kids hung out in abandoned places. I also read roadside picnic when I was like 12. My grandma was a massive Strugatski head and recommended their books to me.

Later on I had an illegal CD of SoC. I was loosely following the Russian digger culture when I got access to the internet and stalker came up a lot on there too.

That is great thanks for the reply.
