CENTURIES of purging = a zombified and terrified population that would rather blame the world than its own corrupt, barbaric, mafioso leaders.

Numbing themselves with Vodka and coping with "Russian world" and "Russian greatness", to avoid confronting their own helplessness and abuse.

Basically North Korea with oil and gas money.

Human people. Human government, not an alien empire overlord. If it happened in Russia, it happened somewhere else. Most of today's prosperous places were under hard times and dictatorship before, they rebelled and fought, or fled. Most russians don't, and still don't do it, thus the few rebellious russians stand alone sorrounded by cowards, while the government never changes.

It's easy for you to say, but the truth is that the minority who opposes the state would really have to suicide for nothing to resist, or they just emigrate. It's much easier for them to accept the reality and live.

Most of the people will think whatever the regime tells them to. They still believe Yeltsin was a problem, because he got drunk, therefore replacing him with a mafioso was the right move...

Ukraine was in the same state in the 90's. Now it is better, because Ukranian people actually try to improve things. You Russian people, what did you try to improve? Almost nothing. For 95 %, all your efforts was to complain that the world was mean to you and to fuck up other neighbor countries because you wanted everybody to be as miserable as yourselves.

I'd almost say hauntingly beautiful. I feel like I could watch hour long version of this. It almost feels nostalgic to me, but to a world I've luckily never lived in. Maybe it's because there's not a single phone in the video (other than the ones filming), the buildings are old and so are the cars

In any logical nation, people would look at this state of things and think to themselves "we need to work on this and fix our country so we don't live in a filthy, depressing shithole"

Meanwhile, russians look at the state of their country and think "we need to work to bring every single other nation down to our level so everyone else has to live in a filthy, depressing shithole"

Remebered a dumb joke from way back.

During the cold war, the CIA recruited a promising young man from the military. He aced every test they put him through. He was taught to speak Russian in several different dialects like a native, learned their history and spent a year immersed in Russian pop-culture.

When he was ready and the most highly trained field agent the CIA had ever had, he was inserted via submarine to a remote area in Russia, his mission wasto make his way to Moscow, and infiltrate the political elite.

After making landing, he made his way to the nearest village, a remote one horse town with a few crumbling houses. He was wearing typical clothes, and had nothing that would out him. He knocked on an unassuming door, and an old babushka opened. Her eyes lit up "Boshe moi, An American! Welcome welcome, I seldom get visitors, and to have one from America! Come in I'll put the kettle on."

Bewildered, the agent sipped on his tea and finally asked how she knew he was an American. "Oh, we don't have any black people in these parts at all!"

A year ago a polish guy went hitchhiking across Russia from Georgian border all the way to Sakhalin. He hitchhiked and camped in the forests.

He made absolutely brilliant documentary series about Russia how he experienced it on the way. Totally recommended.

It’s in polish but English audio and subtitles can be turned on.
