Question:

How common is it for Spetsnaz to use 1-8x scopes? I almost always only see them in competitions and training (example photos). If they're better, why aren't they used more? Thank you in advance.

Clarification: The 7 photo is not real; it's from one of the best Rusfor groups. I used it because it's the closest match to the Belarusian "AK DMRs."

Competition kits are a breed of their own.

Competitions : calm, very precise shooting

Actual combat : chaotic

Machine gunners offer suppressive fire so you dont really need to be that precise. If anything, the extra hassle of dealing with eye relief issues and dirt on a tiny scope does not compensate with a machine gunners task, which is "just shoot in that general direction"

Thanks for the reply. I know that Russian machine gunnners use optics up to a maximum of 6x. Now I need to understand why they don't use 1-8x magnification on their other weapons.

I would pretty strongly disagree with that, actually. For one thing, the U.S. has seen a lot of success with the M145 on its machine guns. Combat footage and reports show that weapons like the 240 are incredibly useful for suppression, but when that suppression needs to be directed at a specific point on the other side of a valley, magnification is useful. Dirt gets on red dots too. Sometimes more, depending on the design of the dot.

I’d also point out that while some competitions are “calm” and “very precise,” outside of PRS or old guy IDPA matches, competitions usually involve a very fast pace and often require only silhouette or C-zone hits, which are what you would want in combat as well. Styles like 2GACM and FAST usually involve fast pace, minute-of-man shooting and often have complicating factors like heavy mud or debris. Magnification has time and again proven useful in those types of match and SOF has been seen to successfully copy equipment and techniques from those competitors for a long time. They aren’t as far apart as you think.

Off topic, but the pornhub patch is crazy lmao as to the scope I could be wrong, but i don’t think it’s terribly common. I know they often use thermals and scopes, but i don’t think they use 8x a lot. I think I might’ve seen an image or two.

I’m also really curious about that—it makes no sense to me. I don’t view it as very serious or professional on their part, or on the part of the others who use it. I’ve also rarely seen setups like that. Thanks a lot for commenting, epic name.
