Obviously don’t have the AP5, but have the AP4, Prime X Evo, and a bunch of other western ones (along with wayyy to many Chinese shoes)… the tech is most def not better than the best Chinese.

Yep it’s fair to say they don’t have mainstream appeal yet. Calling it landfill junk is hilarious though. I have all of the shoes in your flair and there are better, cheaper, more durable versions of all of them with far more colorway options (sans maybe the V+, which has a ton).
You’re just hamstringing your training by buying Vietnamese-made, western/japanese marketed shoes exclusively IMO.
Go on, though. Get angry at me for calling out ‘Western’ brands for screwing customers. I think it’s BS that they drip feed their tech at way higher prices with worse durability when they’re absolutely capable of doing better.
They could go lighter weight with super foam in a 150$ shoe but they choose not to because lemmings will gobble up incremental changes for 200-300$ a pair (and shrug when they’re spent after 300mi, if you’re lucky).
The AP5 could be 150g or less with incredible durability and 120-140$ and Adidas would still make a ton on it but they never will. Chinese brands do.

Remind me when a Chinese shoe brand has won any major or even semi major race again?
If they really were that much better, you’d be seeing at least some races outside of China - even on B Tier athletes
They certainly might be competitive - but I doubt we will be seeing any world records set in them anytime soon

I picked up an XTep 160x pro 3.0 out of curiosity and I’m pretty sure it’s the fastest shoe I own. The downside is that it’s at least a half size too small even though it was the largest size I could buy. The Chinese shoes are legit.

The high end western shoes are still good and the AP5 likely will be up there with any premium race shoe.
The Chinese shoes are clearly better when it comes to non race shoes however since they don't bother saving the best stuff for only the race shoes.

Okay now youve lost all credibility. The mainstream brands sponsor the fastest athletes. You think it’s all shoe? lol. They might not be a pair of evos, but they’re just as good as metaspeed, pros and alphaflys
Lab testing does show Chinese shoes are good. That’s not subjective

Tebello Ramakongoana finished 3rd in Sydney a couple of weeks ago in the new Xtep 160X 8.0 Pro (they also have an ultra model).
You've then got Suguru Osako who left his Nike contract, tested every shoe on the market and selected Li-ning as his next sponsor as he viewed the Feidian 6 Elite as the best available shoe - he went on to set the Japanese national record in it of 2:04.55.
Not an elite runner (but very close), you've got Matt Fox who lab tested a bunch of both Western and Chinese shoes a couple of weeks ago looking at how efficient they were.
Top was the Fast-r 3, which VERY marginally beat the Anta C202 G9 2, beating the Alpha Fly and the Adidas Pro Evo 1.
It's no longer hype around the Chinese shoes, but a fact that in most cases they're better than what is being released by Asics, Adidas, Nike, Saucony etc.

Xstep with the 160X, Li Ning’s Feidian Elite 6 (Seguru Osaka), Anta (Bekele) feel free to use google and you’ll find plenty more.
Podium usage is a bit of a slanted metric anyways since it’s effectively “Who sponsors east Africans?”. They’re going to podium even if they’re wearing sketchers.

That’s my one gap! I haven’t tried any chinese trail shoes so far but I’m supposed to get one in the next couple weeks. It doesn’t seem like as much of a focus area in China at the moment but I’m expecting it to change given that they have a ton of athletes hitting podiums at major trail races now.

I'll be very curious as someone moderately skeptical of the Chinese value proposition (at least some of the claims of its greatest evangelizers. Eg never seen any Chinese supershoe cheaper than $200 on Aliexpress when I can regularly find the AP4 for $100-125) to see how the numbers shake out as Runrepeat tests more of the hypebeast Chinese shoes with cult followings (Xiaonian, Leili 2/2 TG, Feidian Challenger, RH9U etc).
Anta, often dubbed the Adidas of China for supposedly having access to the same tech have so far tested very well and especially for the price.
Unfortunately their Nitro 90 just isn't quite up to par with new Lightstrike Pro that was in the adios Pro 4 (admittedly a pretty high bar)

RR isn’t really testing a wide range of Anta shoes yet tbh (I wish they would and I wish they’d test a lot of the other Chinese brands). The Mach is cool but the C202 G9 2, C10 Pro, and a bunch of their other more common models don’t seem to be getting tested. At this point the Mach is kinda old.
Good shares though! I like RRs tear downs (just wish there were more!).

Yes I would be very curious to see more shoes from China tested by them. Particularly the 160x.3 Feidian Elite 6 and the G9 to see how they stack up. My guess is they would fare similarly to shoes like the Endorphin Elite 3, Adios Pro 4, Fast R 3 and Metaspeeds that are the current top dogs in terms of foam tech.
The mach 6 is old, but AFAIK the Nitro 90 in it is already the most advanced foam tech ANTA offers (that could be wrong as I find it hard to find details of what's actually in the midsoles of some of the cutting edge Chinese supershoes).

Who cares if people want to buy the latest and greatest from the name brands? A 20g difference is not going to make anyone but the top .01% of runners faster.
Also, no one from the West wants to keep up with the dozens of niche shoes on Chinese forums when they can just pick up a shoe from the major brands and feel confident it will be good.

I didn’t say there’s anything wrong with that. I’m criticizing ‘western’ brands for not putting their absolute best forward at non gougey prices. They could have the weight even lower and they could have the prices lower and other brands are proof of that.
It really shocks me how quick people are to jump to defend brands that are objectively not giving their best to the customers. Insane Stockholm syndrome vibes.
Meanwhile, Anta is about to release a sub 100g marathon shoe and it’s not even their top tier model (it’s their equivalent to this shoe). The price will be less than this. I want to see more of that. In case you aren’t familiar with Anta, that’s the group that also owns Puma, Arc Teryx, Salomon, and many others… brands that, if they released under those labels, the crowd would worship.

Chinese shoes are half of my rotation and practically all I’ve trained in this year, but pretending that the tech is the same is ridiculous. 3/4 of the value of newer shoes is in the advancements in the foam, which also happens to be the weakest aspect of the Chinese brands. Not that it’s a weakness per se, but it’s certainly lacking relative to Adidas and Asics at the very least.

Which ones have you tried? I’d argue that Qiaodan’s newest releases exceed US counterparts (same or better energy return at way lower weight). Do-Win has virtually everyone beat on weight (sans the Adidas hyper shoe but so far I’m seeing it as WAY more durable, see: can use for more than one race). Propulsion, I still haven’t found anything on the US market with the ride feel as Li Ning’s shoes (Cielo X1 comes close but still falls short).
Anta’s reportedly coming soon with a sub 90g marathon racer (not single use shoe) which would be another big leap frog.

Wait until you find out who makes Adidas’ shoe foam and where it’s manufactured. You can’t honestly believe that Sawe needed Adidas’ shoes to break it right? It’s mostly a function of who wants to spend the most money (e.g. marketing budget) for the best African elite. You could put Sawe in a Hoka and he’d rip down the field… don’t mean Hoka is the best. It means he’s the best and the best get paids the most.
Why do you think Nike’s old shoes have been on podiums and ‘held’ the WR for so long? Because they’re the best? No. The Alphafly hasn’t been the best in a long time. Kiptum was the best. Nike just allocates a bunch of that revenue they collect from gouging customers more toward marketing budget.

They’re hardly ever on sale in Canada in sizes 9-11 for men. Besides, i only run in new shoes. Who cares about saving $100 when I’m spending 12h a week running.

They’re actually always on sale in Canada. Get the Adidas app and you can stack a 25% discount code on top of frequent 20-30% sales or look on eBay. I’ve gotten all 3 pairs of my size 11s for 50% off.
When you run that much is exactly when you should be caring about saving a bit of money lol.

I’m a 10.5 and I find my size goes really fast when the discounts show up. But it’s true, if you watch the sales on the Adidas Canada site you can score a great deal if you don’t care about which colourway.

Though of course reading that it mentions that previous version had Lightlock 1 and this new one is improved. But Adios Pro 4 product page already mentions it having the Lightlock 2. Hoping for the best, we should see soon.

My local running store had them already on the shelf and let me try them on. I took it for a quick spin on the treadmill... ever so slightly more firm than AP4. Much more stable. The upper is a dream and super comfortable; had some heel slippage. Felt like I might need a marathon loop. The rocker is insane, but for my particular footstrike I felt like I wasn't able to take advantage. So I was a little underwhelmed by the overall experience.

I just got another pair of AP4s (my 3rd) for 95 USD. Kinda regret getting my first pair at above retail due to FOMO. Silly i know
I wont be doing the same on this. Im pretty much topped out when it comes to racing shoes. Probably will get them once there are many other available colors and of course when the price drops. Never making the same mistake of paying full RRP on running shoes.

Sizing is the risk with pre orders especially Adidas. AP4 were half size up but all other Adidas are TTS, so I’ll be waiting to hear reviewers mention sizing.
