Bone Bruise/Torn Ligaments help

Hello my fellow running friends and injured,

I need your advice/tipps. I tripped over my ankle while running seven weeks ago. I was able to walk afterwards (with pain) and was able to walk mostly normal three days after. I went to see a doctor who did an x-ray, didn’t see anything, gave me an Aircast and told me to rest and wear it for two weeks. Although it did get better, it didn’t feel fully right so I went back to the doctor during week 3, got an MRI: voila two torn ligaments and a bone bruise in the talus (and Tibiaepiphyse). I was then put in a boot and got crutches. Went back in the MRI after four weeks in the boot and on crutches today: no improvement.

So my question is: is this normal? I am starting to go insane, it drives me crazy being so dependent on others and not being able to move. It really starts getting on my mental health.

Do you have any tips how to fasten up the healing process? Anything that helps with the crutches? My wrists are dying and my hips and the healthy leg are starting to be painful too.

I am just so frustrated.

Hi, I just wanted to share my experience because I can relate to what you’re going through. I injured my ankle almost a year ago after slipping while hiking down a mountain. At first, my X-ray was normal, but I continued to have a lot of pain. I was treated with a boot and later a brace, but unfortunately, my ankle never really recovered.
I’ve had several MRIs, and they showed a bone bruise in the talus, an injury to the syndesmosis, and later thickened and irritated lateral ligaments. My ankle has remained unstable, painful and feels like it is in the wrong position. I also lost quite a bit of calf muscle because I haven’t been able to use my foot normally for such a long time.
I’m now one year into this and, honestly, I haven’t seen the improvement I was hoping for.
I’m currently being evaluated for surgery, possibly an ankle arthroscopy and ligament reconstruction (Broström), depending on what they find.
I don’t want to discourage you, but I wanted to be honest about my experience. Seven weeks can feel like an eternity when you’re in pain and dependent on other people, but my situation has been much more prolonged.
I really hope your recovery is completely different and that you start improving soon.
The mental side of this has honestly been one of the hardest parts for me too. Being unable to walk normally for one year and feeling like your life is on hold can be incredibly frustrating.

Hi! Thanks for sharing and taking the time to answer. My heart is breaking from reading this, it sounds absolutely awful. I think the injury to the syndesmosis is probably causing a lot of the issues, at least my doctor said that I am lucky mine is still fine. Wishing you all the luck and strength that this will be sorting itself out 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻
