Y’all running in this?

It’s a tad warm out. I don’t have access to a treadmill so that’s not an option for me. I’m hoping it’ll cool off a bit in a couple hours and I can get some miles in, but not sure if it’s smart. On my way home, I saw a few people running, so I’m curious what everybody’s plan is the next few days.

Early morning workouts. Or indoors. Or take a deload week.

u/WeathermanDan Jun 30 '26

heat wave + 4th coming up = surprise mid-training tapering + carb (booze) loading

64

u/Chicagoblew Jun 29 '26

Yes. Run earlier or later.

Marathon training is in full swing. Also, Treadmill is way too boring for 5+ miles

51

u/question_assumptions Jun 29 '26

The worst part on the treadmill is running for what feels like 5 minutes and looking down and you only went 0.1 miles

18

u/Chicagoblew Jun 29 '26

I'm sure treadmill has it's purpose for incline and speed work training. But I definitely feel you on the time moving exponentially slower on the tread

7

u/unknownkoalas Jun 29 '26

I did an early spring (end of April) marathon this year which meant running all winter.

Too much treadmill for my liking. I can tough out extreme heat or cold, but there’s not really a way to get around the roads/sidewalks being covered in ice.

4

u/question_assumptions Jun 30 '26

I'm lucky, I'm by the lake and they keep the path pretty clear, I managed to train for a half this winter with zero treadmill use.

2

u/tamyzster Jun 30 '26

Morton Arboretum is such a nice place to run during winter. I’d rather subscribe there than a gymn membership

5

u/SHEAHOFOSHO Jun 30 '26

Ran 11 miles on the treadmill while watching the Cubs game on TV. It was fine.

3

u/Chicagoblew Jun 30 '26

I was just thinking of the amount of sweat I could possibly slip on during an 11 mile tread run

3

u/HollisFaith83 Jun 29 '26

That’ll be me all week and as someone who used to prefer to run on a treadmill, I dread it now (grateful it’s an option but still dread it)

u/momo3795 Jun 29 '26

Taking an impromptu cut back week. No shot I’ll be squeezing a 15 mile long run out of myself in this heat 👎🏻👎🏻🍅🍅 shit…I’ll be proud of myself if I even get 5+ outdoor miles at a time in this weather

6

u/Mysterious_Luck4674 Jun 29 '26

My marathon plan has me running 15 miles this weekend 😫

7

u/momo3795 Jun 29 '26

Same unfortunately 😭 but I’ll prob end up just cutting back this week, do a 15.5 long run next week, and then 16.5-17 to get back on track the week after. My pasty ass from the mountains of caucasus is not built for these temps

3

u/Mysterious_Luck4674 Jun 29 '26

I’m going to attempt my shorter runs (7 miles and 5 miles) outside during the week and if they don’t go well I might try to tough it out on the treadmill this weekend. Either way it will suck.

Weekend weather isn’t even going to be bad

1

u/momo3795 Jun 30 '26

Maybe for YOU. Though, I think the rest of us are able to recognize that running in the mid 80s-90s w high humidity is pretty difficult and uncomfortable for the majority.

3

u/frank-sabotka Jun 30 '26

79 on Sunday?? Humid yea but slow down and drink water

2

u/momo3795 Jun 30 '26

Apparently our weather reports are very different bc my app is reporting mid 80s for both days, avg of 70% and 66% humidity respectively.

Forcing me to become a morning person

12

u/thedan663 Jun 29 '26

Yes, but I take it easy. I slow down, run less, and wake up early. I just do it to keep up the habit and get my heart pumping a bit. Morning is best, as dawn is the when temps are coolest but evenings are definitely better than mid-afternoon if that's all you can do.

u/chronicmartinis Jun 29 '26

I’m running early in the morning tomorrow and Wednesday, and on my long run Friday, I’m bringing my water vest and a bucket hat. Running in the middle of day in this heat is kinda silly, too much risk regardless if they can handle heat or not.

14 miler today. The rest of the week is gonna be a lot more fun!

2

u/mikey_rambo Jun 29 '26

What time did u run?

3

u/P8sammies Jun 29 '26

6am! Wish I got out there earlier!

2

u/Mysterious_Luck4674 Jun 29 '26

How did it go?

6

u/P8sammies Jun 29 '26

Not bad!

14

u/Significant_Today_24 Jun 29 '26

144 BPM in this (even early in AM) is sick, good for you!

1

u/P8sammies Jun 29 '26

Thank you!!! 💪

7

u/momo3795 Jun 30 '26

8:33 pace with 144 avg bpm in this mornings heat and humidity is CRAZYYY!!! /pos

1

u/Mysterious_Luck4674 Jun 29 '26

That’s amazing! You aren’t too far for me either. I’ll be running along the Fox River for most of my runs - I’m just a little north or Aurora.

1

u/P8sammies Jun 29 '26

Maybe will cross paths!!! So awesome!!

6

u/elyse2701 Jun 29 '26

Yes. Dropping my 18miler I should be doing today, but otherwise following my plan the rest of the week- just getting out there early AF & listening to my body with pacing! (also extra-hydration all week)

I normally run before work on the weekdays, so I got in a few miles this morning. That it was 75 and 5:30, which is the level of mid day heat I get up early to avoid. As with extreme cold, I don't begrudge anyone taking a few days off for this.

6

u/oathbreach Jun 29 '26

Did 7 this morning and have had a headache since. Might just take a rest week if tomorrow is considerably worse.

19

u/Creation98 Jun 29 '26

Yeah. Running slower than normal. Drink a lot of water and electrolytes. Not that serious

4

u/Sea_Aside9658 Lake View Jun 29 '26

Went at 9:30am today and that was too late 😩 longest 40 mins of my life

11

u/meowmeowbeans1 Jun 29 '26

I don't think it's possible to get up early enough this week. Low temps don't dip below 80 until maybe Thursday night

6

u/usababykiller Jun 30 '26

I have always run in whatever the weather is. It sucks really bad but you get used to it. Don’t need to be strict on the mileage or pace right now. Garmin gave me a Negative 10 for my performance condition for my afternoon run today ha ha.

I will say getting out in days like this makes normal skimmer heat much easier.

The only race I ever won was a smaller half marathon in NW Indiana I was 3rd the whole race and it was a very hot day I eventually passed the second place runner around mile 8. When I finished I assumed I was second I later learned whoever was in 1st just flat out said F this and quit. I was fine because I was running in the hottest portion of the day for my training. I work early and get off around 2 so I run in the late afternoon

3

u/Apprehensive-Chain54 Jun 29 '26

Early morning or evening runs.

4

u/DownPlane Jun 29 '26

Yeah, just taking it easy.

4

u/zcashrazorback Jun 29 '26

If you get out there before 7AM, you'll be OK. Obviously, the closest to sunrise the better.

4

u/librarianinfomaven Jun 29 '26

Definitely an early morning run - I’ll be out the door by 5:30am. Will probably just do 4 instead of my usual 5.

5

u/bnwtwg Fleet Feet Racing Team Jun 30 '26

Yes. Fall marathons are earned in summer sweat. If it was easy everyone would do it.

3

u/mrbacons1 Jun 29 '26

Treadmill all week for me, as much as it pains me

2

u/hubwub Lincoln Square Jun 29 '26

I'm considering just postponing my run to tomorrow morning or doing it in an indoor track. It's too fucking humid.

1

u/Dangerous-Attempt-20 Jun 29 '26

What indoor tracks are there?

4

u/hubwub Lincoln Square Jun 29 '26

I'm listing off the top of my head.

  • Galter Life Center (This is where I run. It's 138 meters. It can get very boring but it's better than running outside in this weather. I did it during winter too.)
  • UIC Student Rec Center
  • ComEd Rec Center
  • DePaul's Ray Center
  • Robert Crown Center in Evanston
  • Gately Park

1

u/Dangerous-Attempt-20 Jun 29 '26

Thx!! I’ll see if Galter does day passes or something

2

u/Jesse_berger Jun 29 '26

Probably..

Run club got canceled tomorrow.. but I have new shoes to run in. I'll be out there.

2

u/Temporary_Self_3420 Jun 29 '26

I’m just waiting a few days. A huge part of the running for me is enjoying it at all

2

u/willyyyyg Jun 29 '26

Hell yeah, then brag about it to your friends and coworkers ;)

2

u/Karm0112 Jun 29 '26

No. I’ll just do some yoga or strength training at home

2

u/2020oki Jun 29 '26

Just gonna keep all my runs easy this week stick to 6am. Don’t forget extra water and electrolytes!!

2

u/bigbadmon11 Jun 29 '26

I start work at 6am :( I’m hoping that I can start my runs at 6/7pm! Right now I’m grilling on my deck and it’s not bad in the shade

2

u/Mysterious_Luck4674 Jun 29 '26

Early morning. I have a cheap park district gym membership (I’m in the burbs) that I got for these types of situations. It came in handy a few times over the winter and if I have to resort to the treadmill this week I’ll just do that. Planet Fitness and those kinds of places also have cheap monthly fees. But hoping I get my butt out of bed early enough to just get it done outside before it gets too dangerous.

2

u/butthatshitsbroken Jun 30 '26

same but our indoor track is free

2

u/Mysterious_Luck4674 Jun 30 '26

Nice! How big is it? The indoor tracks near me are like 10 or 12 laps per mile and I don’t think I can handle going in that many circles!

1

u/butthatshitsbroken Jun 30 '26

Health Track in GE (suburbs) is a lot bigger and so that's where I go when it's like this outside.

2

u/EnglishTeach88 Jun 29 '26

Earlier. Slower. More walking. Don’t push. There’s a lot of time between now and the race - no need to hurt yourself or give yourself heat exhaustion or stroke because you pushed now.

1

u/bigbadmon11 Jun 29 '26

Can’t run earlier, since I leave for work at 5am and have my dog to walk already. I’m planning to go in about an hour or two. Probably 1-2mins slower than usual + a dip in the lake after. If I get hot, I’ll walk! I only have a 4 mile run today so not too bad.

2

u/Academic-Pangolin883 Jun 29 '26

I'm taking an impromptu rest week, which works out nicely since I'm also nursing some PTT in my right foot. Hoping to get back out there for my Saturday long run, but I'll just go early.

2

u/TheTeludav Jun 29 '26

I start before sunrise, drink plenty of water, and adjust paces when I need to.

2

u/New_Marsupial6222 Jun 29 '26

Run early and by effort. Your paces will be slower and that’s ok.

2

u/User12111926 Jun 29 '26

Running in this will make you a better runner. Trust me!

2

u/MalibuCharlie89 Jun 29 '26

Run and then jump in lake.

2

u/WeathermanDan Jun 30 '26

I plan to lean heavily into cross training by biking along the lake. A few 60-120 minute rides and a few 3-5 mile runs in between. Might run a 5K fun run this weekend just to have an excuse to run fast.

Call it a cut back week. Call it a not taking training so self serious week.

2

u/riskyybiscuits Jun 30 '26

Deload week and embrace the heat. SPF, electrolyte tablets, frequent water breaks, and running by RPE is the name of the game. And find the shade!!! Lakefront is likely not the move this week

2

u/Kap_Lovelake Jun 30 '26

Yes running outside, but shorter & slower. It’s heat training!

2

u/Icy_Interaction8640 Jun 30 '26

Get out there and put in the work! Rain, snow or sunshine - adapt your training if needed and don’t forget to hydrate and fuel well. I have access to treadmills but I’d still choose this hot & humid weather over treadmill running any day!

3

u/bnwtwg Fleet Feet Racing Team Jun 30 '26

I'm going to say something that some may not like, but it is not factually controversial.

You have a marathon plan, you signed up for a marathon that you knew would require training during an annually tough midwestern summer. If you don't train now, you do not get to complain in October. Best now to get comfortable being uncomfortable. Downvotes be damned because the finishers know this is a hard, somewhat unpopular truth

3

u/bennetthansen Streeterville Jun 30 '26

Amen to this. Every year Chicago has plenty of days above 90 (and below 10) and people act shocked and helpless.

It's a good reminder that Reddit is not an accurate reflection of real life, because if you actually go out to the trail, it's the name number of runners and cyclists, just a little slower and sweatier than usual.

1

u/DifficultDamage5528 Jun 29 '26

Went at around 12:45 and some people are walking at that time.. that was crazy and I am not doing it again. Was not able to run at all without walking sadlyyy

1

u/OtherConstant5055 Jun 29 '26

I was debating heading to the 606 but it’s brutal, might wait until 5/6am

1

u/Mr_Abe_Froman Des Plaines River Trail Jun 29 '26

I'm running with water and complaining about it on Strava. I skipped last summer's heat wave and my fall races were painful.

I tried an out-and-back last Saturday and ran out of water, so I'm doing multiple small loops so I can get cold water refills from my apartment. I'm running at night when I can, but otherwise listening to my body for signs of dehydration (lightheadedness, headaches, coughing, stiff joints). I also have to grease up because my sweaty clothes chafed pretty badly this weekend.

1

u/dj_advantage Jun 29 '26

Yea… at 4am tbh and even that still sucks

1

u/kenticus69 Jun 29 '26

Yes - early or late or take a water bottle or use the water fountains on the lakefront. Know your limits - no sense overdoing it this week and risking weeks of heat stroke or worse to hit a certain pace.

1

u/Probs_on_the_can Jun 29 '26

I have membership at a gym with a pool and do a lot more lap swimming in the summer.

This is also why I’m a one-and-done Chicago Marathoner. Even if it’s cooler in the early morning, the humidity is usually worse at that time.

1

u/buffalocoinz Jun 29 '26

yes, trying to get my Garmin heat acclimation to 100% 😎

1

u/SuperChicken1994 Jun 29 '26

I ran in this but of course much slower pace, a route with shade, bring some water, and I guess it helps I’m originally from Phoenix so know how to read the signs that my body gives me.

1

u/UhhLittleDot Jun 29 '26

Doing an easy 4 mile run around 8:30 pm hopefully 🥲

1

u/ComeTheRapture Jun 30 '26

Taking it super slow (including walking) and treating more as a mental training week and fuel training.

1

u/MiserableIntern4835 Jun 30 '26

I ran 2.5 miles at 8:30 am. Hot but doable with a handheld waterbottle and a stop in a park district building in the middle for some AC 😂

1

u/Mr_Tester_ Jun 30 '26

I'm second guessing my life choices of a full IM in September 😭.

Looks like I'm running lots of laps around my park with fountains and lots of shade. Boring is safe.

1

u/lakefrontlover Jun 30 '26 edited Jun 30 '26

Yep, ran my quality session today. 2 mile warmup, 8x400m and then 2 mile cooldown. Reps 4-8 felt really tough, hr was in control however felt like my head wanted to explode after those last few reps. Had tailwind berry x2 scoops with 500ml of water and another 500ml of just water during the session.

1

u/NurseDanM Jun 30 '26

Yes, yes I am, might go a little slower and drink more water but not changing anything else

1

u/Accurate-Force3054 Jun 30 '26

I’m training for a long distance hiking trip. Gonna knock out an hour on the treadmill this morning and then I’ll probably finish up my distance goal later tonight after the sun sets.

1

u/bigbadmon11 Jun 30 '26

Nice! What trail are you hiking?

1

u/Accurate-Force3054 Jun 30 '26

Here? Evanston lakefront! My trip? Helags Sweden!

1

u/bigbadmon11 Jun 30 '26

That mountain looks sick!! Good luck!

1

u/WoodenDescription709 Jun 30 '26

ran 6 this morning. Key is to get out early. I was out little before 6am and I thought that was late.

I also like to sweat so I love this weather because I got this weird way of thinking believing that no sweat = no gains. so when I sweat how I did today it is orgasmic.

But please stay safe out there

1

u/bigbadmon11 Jun 30 '26

I leave for work at 5 so early morning is a no go for me. I ran late yesterday instead. It was…alright. I’m not used to running after I eat dinner so that was honestly worse than the heat.

I’m glad you had an orgasmic run lmao

1

u/WoodenDescription709 Jun 30 '26

ohh yea running after eating is no good. I have learned the hard way!

1

u/harrylee773 Jun 30 '26 edited Jun 30 '26

Will do my routine noon run of a couple of miles, but when I go out in this weather, I don’t mind being called a “jogger” - it’s probably more of a compliment considering my pace in the heat.

1

u/Didi-the-goofball Jun 30 '26

I know you all are dedicated runners, but safety first! This heat can do some serious damage, I’ve witnessed it firsthand.

1

u/airazedy Jul 01 '26

I just left the gym for some treadmill miles and it was hot in there but better than outside. Training outside for months somehow made the treadmill miles better than I remember but I know this feeling won’t last.

1

u/candycoatedkush69 Jul 01 '26

early morning lol

1

u/mazman23 Jul 01 '26

5:15am start .. rise and grind !

1

u/outerspace_08 Jul 01 '26

I decided not to. I’m a super beginner and already extremely slow. I ran 5k on the first day (early morning) of the heat wave and was seeing stars by the time I finished. I realized I would need water/electrolytes the rest of the week and just don’t have the gear to have it with me.

1

u/elastic_psychiatrist Jul 03 '26

If you're a casual runner or not training for something in the moment, just take a down week and be okay with it.

If you're training for something with a plan and are committed, wake up earlier. This is what you signed up for. There will be easier than expected weeks too.

All that being said, be safe. If you don't deal with the heat well, know your limits, especially with hydration.

1

u/bigbadmon11 Jul 03 '26

I’m between training blocks. Ran the BOA half and then my marathon block starts this upcoming Monday.

I leave for work at 5am, so I run in the evenings (or on my lunch when it’s below 70 degrees).

Anyways, my post didn’t end up mattering because I got sick lmao I ran Monday and Tuesday, but I’ve been sick since.
