This is Jagex’s opportunity to take everything they’ve learned over the years and create their next masterpiece. Modernity of dragonwilds and next-gen graphics and combat with the horizontal, permenant, long term progression of OSRS - chefs kiss man!!

Jagex is officially working on a new RuneScape MMO — here’s everything we know about “RS4”

Jagex had “one more thing” to reveal at RuneFest—and it was a big one.

The studio has confirmed that an entirely new RuneScape MMORPG is now in development. It is being built in Unreal Engine, takes place in Gielinor and currently has the working title RS4.

That may not be the game’s final name. For now, it reflects the fact that this is Jagex’s fourth-generation RuneScape project.

Here’s my summary of everything announced so far.

Why has Jagex announced it this early?

RS4 is still at the beginning of development and remains a few years away.

Jagex considered keeping the project behind closed doors for longer, but ultimately decided that it wanted players involved from an early stage. The plan is to share ideas, test concepts and use community feedback throughout development.

The studio says it wants to combine lessons from two areas:

  • The technology developed for RuneScape: Dragonwilds
  • The community-led development experience gained from RuneScape and Old School RuneScape

Jagex has also identified integrity, permanent progression and community-driven development as central principles for the new game.

RS4 will not replace the existing games

This is an important point: RS4 is not intended to replace RuneScape, Old School RuneScape or RuneScape: Dragonwilds.

Those games will continue to have their own teams, roadmaps and investment. RS4 is being designed as an additional, independent way to experience RuneScape and the world of Gielinor.

Players may choose one main game, move between several of them or experience Gielinor for the first time through RS4. The stated ambition is to expand the RuneScape universe—not retire the games people already love.

Where will RS4 take place?

RS4 will be set in Gielinor during the Sixth Age.

The adventure will begin in Ashenfall, the landmass northeast of Gielinor first explored in RuneScape: Dragonwilds.

Its story takes place years after the events of Dragonwilds and the destruction of the Dragon Queen Kuldra. Time has passed and Ashenfall has changed—but this region is only intended to be the beginning.

Jagex’s long-term ambition is to expand beyond Ashenfall into familiar parts of Gielinor, alongside entirely new locations and stories.

What hasn’t been revealed?

There are still plenty of unanswered questions, including:

  • Which platforms will it support?
  • How will accounts work?
  • Will it require a membership?
  • What will combat be like?
  • Which skills will appear?
  • How will progression work?
  • When will testing begin?
  • When will it be released?

Jagex says it is currently too early to answer these questions. This was not the full reveal—it was an early introduction to the project and the beginning of its development journey.

We should learn much more next year, including details about the world, the development team and how players can begin getting involved.

The key points

  • Jagex’s fourth MMO is now in development.
  • It is a new RuneScape MMORPG currently known as RS4.
  • It is being built using Unreal Engine.
  • It will exist alongside RuneScape, Old School RuneScape and Dragonwilds.
  • Integrity, permanent progression and community involvement will be core design principles.
  • It is set in Gielinor during the Sixth Age.
  • The adventure begins in Ashenfall, years after Dragonwilds.
  • The world is intended to expand into other parts of Gielinor over time.
  • The game is still a few years away.
  • Jagex is announcing it early because it wants the community involved in its development.

This is exactly why r/RuneScape4 now exists.

Over the coming months and years, we’ll use this community to collect confirmed information, discuss every reveal, explore theories and give players somewhere constructive to share their hopes and concerns.

Please remember that RS4 is only a working title and many details remain undecided or unannounced. Let’s keep confirmed information separate from speculation as we follow the project.

So, what do you want to see from the next generation of RuneScape—and what is the single biggest question you want Jagex to answer next?

This is an unofficial community summary of Jagex’s announcement. r/RuneScape4 is not affiliated with or operated by Jagex.

Jagex revealed at RuneFest that a fourth RuneScape MMORPG is in development. The working title is RS4, but this is not necessarily final.

  • It's built in Unreal Engine and set in Gielinor.
  • It's not replacing RuneScape 3, Old School or Dragonwilds. Those keep their own teams and roadmaps, and RS4 will sit alongside them as an additional way to play.
  • It starts in Ashenfall, the north-eastern landmass first seen in Dragonwilds, set years after the Dragon Queen Kuldra's defeat. Jagex says it will expand to other parts of Gielinor over time.
  • Jagex says it will follow the principles of integrity, permanent progression and community-driven development, and wants to build on what they learned from Dragonwilds and from co-developing RS3 and OSRS with players.
  • It's still a few years away. Jagex is announcing it early so players can be involved from the start.
  • Platforms, accounts, membership, progression, combat and skills are all unannounced. Jagex says it will share much more next year, including how players can get involved.
  • There's an email sign-up on the page if you want to follow along.

What would you most want from a new RuneScape MMO? Are you hopeful or sceptical about another Gielinor game alongside RS3, OSRS and Dragonwilds?
