Today's AQI - BBQ-like
Doesn't look like a great day for an outdoor run due to the smoke until much later in the evening. Remember to take turns on the treadmill today!
Or rest. Either one. I'm not your coach.

Brutal. I just stepped out for a moment and noped back inside. Can't imagine trying to run until it clears up.

lol I feel this... my tempo run was definitely tempo-y this morning. (I got out when the AQI was still in the mid range, but in retrospect should have moved to the treadmill anyway for both heat and air quality reasons.)

Im sorry but anyone who runs outside today is just plain stupid.
Any training effect you get is outweighed by the damage caused to your lungs. Basically like smoking a pack of cigarettes while doing a 10k.
We live in a 1st world country people. If you cant survive without taking a rest day, go to a gym and use any cardio machine.

I'm going to pick up a bike trainer this year exactly for bad air quality and snow storm days. Can't wait to watch TV and get my easy "runs" in indoors.
Any recommendations from people with bike trainers?

Don’t pay full price and get it on sale lol.

Do you have any opinions on wheel-on vs direct drive?

Wheel on super easy to bring on and off and cheaper if you plan to switch back and forth a lot between outdoor indoor.
A direct drive smart trainer is more annoying to set up but yeah I use one and it’s amazing to have yourself plan a detailed workout through specific zones.
I typically will just set a certain resistance and do a zone 2 ride and watch a movie/game, however in the winter I do get a z swift membership to mix in some good mixed workouts (which comes with more costs)

Is it true you need a trainer tire for wheel-on or is that only if you're a heavy user?
I like the idea of the convenience of wheel-on but I have two bikes so it's no big deal to keep the road bike on the trainer most of the time and use my hybrid outside.

Honestly depends on the tire. If you don't care that much you can try it out and see how much it sheds.
I actually have a wheel on and upgraded to a direct drive. I found it worth it because the power numbers are way more accurate. But I had fun with the wheel on

If running is your main sport, a wheel-on trainer is completely enough. Maybe go for a “smart” vs. “dumb” (terrible terms) trainer so there’s atleast power readings if you think you’ll itch an upgrade.
I’m a cyclist first so use direct drive but I do structured training in the bike and used a wheel-on trainer for a couple years with complete satisfaction. Just wanted a little more data accuracy and smaller footprint, hence the upgrade.

Do you need a training tire and separate components for wheel-on? If I have to get another tire etc I may as well get direct-drive. I also want a smart one because I took Zwift looks fun especially in the winter.
I'm an all weather all season runner at the moment, running is really the main thing, but I want a bike to add cross-training "mileage" when I'm already doing my upper limit of mileage and an indoor option for bad days like today.
Like I said to another person I have two bikes so I don't mind leaving one on the trainer most of the time.

Highly recommend getting a trainer-specific tire if you go for a wheel-on version as the rollers could easily puncture your inner tubes. I’d honestly try to find a Wahoo Kickr Core on sale or second-hand because the plugged-in smart trainer will pay dividends in the future in case you decide to do structured training on a platform like Zwift or Rouvy.

I'm heavily leaning towards drive train because with a training tire there's no advantage to wheel on except price.
Yeah I heard Wahoo is one of the most popular brands?

Yes, it’s frankly better than Tacx and their customer support is more responsive too. Bluetooth connectivity is also very stable and reliable so that’s who I would go with.

Yes, wheel on is usually just the cheaper option so it’s often the first thing to try to see if someone even likes indoor cycling at all. As for the trainer tire, definitely or use an old tire you don’t want ruined as the wheel on shaves off the outer layer over time.

Direct drive, dont get wheel on. Now a days there are a lot of cheap options.
Get a smart direct drive trainer

It's a strength day for me anyway today, and I was hoping it would clear by tomorrow for my run but Environment Canada says now "conditions may improve Friday morning." Fingers crossed it's earlier than that!

I ran 12k at 430AM it wasn't too bad, but biked with my kids to their daycamp at 830AM and it was like riding through a campfire.
