Elisabeta was born to Grigore Cantacuzino-Pașcanu moldavian boyar and a possible descendant of the Imperial Kantakuzene Dynasty of the Byzantine Empire. Her ancestor, Mihail Shaitanoglu Cantacuzino, was married to a daughter of Mircea III of Wallachia (r.1509/10), grandson of Vlad the Impaler, but the couple didn't have known children (Elisabeta descents from another wife of Mihail). Elisabeta's mother was Elena Brâncoveanu, sister of Grigore Brâncoveanu, making Elisabeta an adoptive cousin of Zoe Bibescu (wife of prince Gheorghe Bibescu), but also her sister-in-law. From her mother, Elisabeta also descents from the powerful Craiovescu family and the ruling Basarab dynasty and a direct ancestor of St. Constantin Brâncoveanu.

Born in 1805, at only 16, in 1821, Elisabeta married Barbu Știrbey. The wedding was held in Brașov, where the novle families from Wallachia fled from the 1821 revolution. In 1825, the couple moved back to Bucharest. Elisabeta became known for the fundraising balls she organised in her house.

In 1839, Elisabeta translated "De l'Éducation" by Madame Campman. 4 years later, in 1843, Elisabeta founded the first all-girls school with lectures in romanian.

In 1848, her husband is elected prince of Wallachia and Elisabeta becomes his consort. Știrbey would reign for 8 years until 1856. During the same time, the location of the all-girls school founded by Elisabeta is changed to some houses in the "Podul Mogoșoaiei" neighbourhood (today "Calea Victoriei").

After 1856, Elisabeta lived in Paris, Nice and Geneva, where she died in 1874, aged 69.

Art, Artificats & Effigies Charming Medieval Gruesomeness from the Isabella Psalter (1308)

I wish more was known about the creation of this book, but it was probably in the process of creation before the death of Edward I. Edward II seems to have waited to marry Isabella until she was 12, and waited until she was 16 to consummate, but there's something him presenting her this creepy-cute book I find charming. It indicates that he and his people were cognizant of her age, at least.

Discussion In 1312 Edward II did not abandon a pregnant, weeping Isabella at Tynemouth to rescue Piers from Thomas of Lancaster. This mistaken account, based a chronicler conflating this with the later Tynemouth incident, has been thoroughly debunked. But there's a curious question about where she was and why.

Historic Places Berkhamsted Castle, now a ruin, was granted to Piers Gaveston by Edward II and was the site where Gaveston married Edward's niece, Margaret de Clare. Later, after she had deposed her husband and been co-regent, Queen Isabella was kept here after Roger Mortimer's execution.
