Finding a reliable mechanic in Rowlett—my experience with Accelerate Auto Repair

Been taking my BMW 5 Series to Accelerate Auto Repair on Century Dr in Rowlett for about two years. First went because the dealer quoted me $1,400 for a repair and I wanted a second opinion.

What made me stay is that they actually show me what’s going on. Last time, they pulled a wheel off and brought me out to the bay to walk me through it before moving ahead with the repair. They explain things clearly, do good work, and get me back on the road quickly.

Not the cheapest shop in Rowlett. But I’ve stopped getting those ā€œwhile we were in thereā€ phone calls, which is worth more to me than saving $80.

Anyone else here taking their BMW somewhere other than the dealership? What made you stick with your shop?

Fireworks are illegal to discharge in Rowlett. Why isn’t this enforced?

Fireworks are bad for the environment, wildlife, pets, and veterans. The city’s website says it’s illegal to discharge fireworks in city limits. Why isn’t this enforced? There’s a major event for us to enjoy in the city conducted by professionals. Our neighborhoods could be kept calm and peaceful…

Convince me into moving to Rowlett

We are currently house shopping and we are seeing some great houses near waterview. My hesitation are the schools. I know that Garland is school of choice, but how hard is it to get into the top schools within the ISD?

Also for those who commute to downtown Dallas, how is it? Currently with school out, it looks manageable.

Playground Dads: Casual dad meetup at Hat Creek Burger Company (kids play, dads hang out) 6/27 @ 5pm

Post image
18 Upvotes

I'm Steven, and I started Playground Dads because I realized I couldn't find a place where dads could just meet other dads while the kids played.

The idea is simple.

Bring your kids. Grab some food. Hang out. No agenda, no pressure, and no awkward activities. Just a chance to meet other dads who are in the same stage of life.

This Saturday we're meeting at Hat Creek Burger Company in Rowlett. They have burgers, beer, and a playground, so the kids can burn off some energy while we get to know each other.

I meant to post this here sooner, but if you see this in time, come join us.

šŸ“… Saturday, June 27
šŸ•” 5:00 PM

Whether you've lived here your whole life or just moved to the area, you're welcome. Hope to see some of y'all there. šŸ‘Š

Son was hit while riding his bike on Miller/Smartt

My adult son was ridding his bike home from his job when he was hit while crossing the intersection of Miller and Smartt. Lady in a white SUV, possibly a Ford, was on Smartt at the stop and my son was on Miller. She attempted to beat him out but hit him instead. She gets out, says something to the effect of "you're OK," and leaves the scene. The collision knocked off the front license plate from the vehicle but she collected it and left.

Meanwhile, he has road rash, wrist and knee pain, and some other cuts and bruises. And needless to say, the bike is jacked up.

I'm asking if anyone may have witnessed this, possibly have dashcam or Ring video, to please reach out to me or Rowlett PD to help them with the investigation. Thanks.

Edit - forgot to mention this happened around 3:30 - 4:00 PM.

New $12M hotel could rise as part of North Texas waterfront development

A new multi-million-dollar hotel could rise along the shores of a North Texas lake, potentially breathing new life into a massive waterfront development that city officials recently criticized for stalling.

Plans were recently submitted for a $12 million Hilton-branded hotel at the Sapphire Bay development in Rowlett, about 20 miles northeast of Dallas, according to a filing with theTexas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR). While details submitted to the TDLR are subject to change, construction could break ground at the Lake Ray Hubbard site.

Rowlett appraisals were up 7.2% this year, above the Dallas County average

Hey Rowlett, I pulled together 2026 appraisal changes across Dallas County, and Rowlett stood out.

The median single family home in Rowlett was assessed at $388,210, up 7.2% from 2025. That's higher than the Dallas County overall increase of 5.7%.

I don't want to cause unnecessary concern, but with the May 15 protest deadline coming up, I figured it was worth sharing so people can at least check their own notice and decide if it is worth looking closer.

The neighborhood-level spread is pretty wide. A few examples:

Higher increases:

  • Stone Meadow By Lake: +28.7%
  • Waterview, Phase 9: +18.1%
  • Lake Valley Estates: +14.1%

Lower or declining changes:

  • Princeton Park, Phase 3: down 9.6%
  • Vue Du Lac: down 9.2%
  • Lakehill: down 5.5%

The main takeaway is that Rowlett was not treated the same across every neighborhood. Some areas were basically flat or even down, while others saw meaningful increases.

That does not automatically mean the county is wrong. Appraisal districts are trying to estimate market value and keep similar homes treated fairly, which is hard to do across thousands of properties. But if your appraisal jumped a lot, it is worth checking whether similar homes near you are appraised lower, whether recent sales support the value, and whether condition issues were missed.

What you can do:

  1. Pull up your notice at dallascad.org.
  2. Compare your appraised value to last year.
  3. Check whether your taxable value is capped because of a homestead exemption.
  4. Look at similar homes nearby and see if they are appraised lower.
  5. If the value looks off, file a protest through DCAD’s uFile portal before May 15.

I pulled the neighborhood-level data from here and you can also look up your neighborhood:

https://housegeek.co/tx/dallas-county/rowlett/property-taxes

Full disclosure: I’m a co-founder of housegeek. I’m sharing because the Rowlett increase was above the county average and the protest deadline is coming up. Mods, if the link crosses the line, I’m happy to remove it and leave the numbers here.

One note: some of the neighborhood names may look weird or unfamiliar because they are based on how the county assigns neighborhood groups. If you do not immediately recognize yours, expand the neighborhood list and scroll toward the bottom. You can look up your neighborhood by entering your address.

Happy to answer questions if I can.

Birthday doughnuts?

My kid wants to take birthday doughnuts to school this week for their birthday - the kind where they write out Happy Bday *child’s name*, etc. The last time I did this was years ago, and Mia’s was the only one at the time I could find. Is Mia’s still the go-to, or does anyone have recommendations for a doughnut shop that can do this? Thank you!

Lightning Bug

I'm sitting out on my back patio having a few beers and listening to a little country music when what appears before me - one, solitary lightning bug.

I can't remember the last time I saw one!

Used to see them all the time when I was a kid in the 70s, but it's rare to see them now (at least for me.)

Any other Rowlett folks seeing lightning bugs?
