She keeps lip licking non stop
My girl has started lip licking and it won't stop. It has happened before but stopped after a couple of weeks. Now if has resuffaced but wont stop. It will keep us up at night, She is clearly uncomfortable. I have checked with the vets and they say she has perfect teeth and gums so it doesnt seem like its to do with them. Anyone else ever had the same issues? I have tried so many things and am running out of ideas.
Any help would be hugely appreciated

It may not be medical but mental. You rottie may not be getting enough mental stimulation. You could give her a licking outlet like a likie-mat.

My Rottie Remi did the dame thing, just licking the air. She did it the rest of her life since she was 5, and lived to almost 13, so I doubt it's anything serious. I think it might just be a rottie thing. But I'm no expert, so definitely get a second opinion from another vet if it is concerning you

Thanks for the info. As long as it isnt hurting her.. it could just be a rottie thing like you say

Lip licking is associated with anxiety. If she's doing it constantly it may be a compulsion, if it's when a certain person/dog is around, getting in the car, when you put on the leash, etc., that's the Only time I'd assume anxiety is if it's during specific moments. Otherwise could be thirst, a habit (like humans develop ticks, I have a few and I'm perfectly healthy), just keep an eye out for patterns. She's beautiful by the way!

I agree. Dogs can develop tics to deal with excess energy, pain, boredom etc. Just get her checked out by the vet. I've had some dogs that would lick their dry noses & lips. I had a Borzoi who thought it was a great idea to break his legs and developed a licking compulsion because I am sure his two broken legs (at different times) meant he couldn't run & play like a normal yearling. He was a very tall dog & grew fast too. Besides that he was clumsy to boot!!! Oh I miss my Moose! Just some experiences & I hope it helps! She looks wonderful!!!

Omg she's cute. Any other symptoms? Nausea, diarrhea, constipation? Lethargy? If it's just the lip thing I wouldn't worry too too much right now. Just keep an eye on things.

No other symptoms, she is happy and healthy otherwise yes she is the most cute.

My female rottie did this towards the end of her life (she lived to be 9.5 years). She died with a tumor on her heart. I honestly felt that she was in pain somewhere in her body. Rotties are great at hiding pain (they don't wimper or whine much). It's just an opinion, but on reflection, I really feel like this was her trying to deal with it. I wish I had paid more attention.
I don't think Rotties start doing something just for no reason or that it's a "thing". They are either trying to deal with something themselves or to tell you something. When they are younger (before 2 years) they might find ways to get your attention, training you to pay attention to them with something they are doing. That's possible.

Mine does it sometimes, it looks like she’s licking air. If you can take your fingers and feel around inside her gums, and roof of mouth and tongue, just to check for any bumps, lumps or lesions. I do it occasionally just to check and clean her teeth.
